Just remember, Atlas is now Draco and knows how things are going to work out. So, when I say Draco, I mean Atlas.
Chapter 2:
Over the next few weeks Draco (Atlas) began to write all he knows about the Harry Potter series in a small empty notebook that he has found in his desk drawers. Beginning with the first year, and what is about to happen through to the seventh year with how things will end. The good news was that, he wasn't going to die in the next 20 or so years, the bad news is that he's Draco Malfoy, the most spineless character he has ever read. Hold on, if I'm Draco Malfoy, I can do what I want. I can stand up to my father, I can stand up to Voldemort, and I can help Harry, but in saying that I can't interfere too much or the ending might not be the same, Draco thought to himself.
His Hogwarts letter finally arrived a few weeks later and his inner Potterhead was jumping for joy, and in a few days, his mother will take him to Diagon Alley to get his school supplies. It was this day that Draco meets Harry at Madame Malkins for the first time, but Draco being a git, all he could do was talk big about himself and how he came from a pureblood family. Then the next meeting would be arriving at Hogwarts before being sorted into their houses. Draco thought that it would be best If he could make a better impression and at the very least not make him too bad of an enemy.
The day finally arrived, after taking the floo powder to Diagon Alley, his mother led him through to all the shops starting with Ollivanders, getting his 10-inch Hawthorn wood wand and unicorn hair core, then to Fourish and Blotts for his books, then finally to Madame Malkins for his uniform. He stood at small podium as Madame Malkin took out a measuring tape that has been enchanted to take his measurements. All Draco cold think about is how to make a good impression but not to be too likeable. Suddenly, the bell on the door rang as a small dark-haired boy entered the shop. Here we go, Draco thought. "Ah! Hello there!" Draco smirked. "Getting your robes for Hogwarts too?" The boy nodded. "What house do think you'll sorted into? I know I'm going to be in Slytherin, my whole family has been for centuries" Draco continued, hoping he's not coming across like spoilt brat, but keeping to the original dialog as possible.
"Actually, I have no idea about the houses. In fact, I just found out that I am a wizard a week ago." The dark-haired boy explained. His words have taken Draco by surprise. This wasn't in the book. Maybe this isn't Potter.
"You're a muggle-born then?" Draco pried
"Well not actually. I was told that both my parents were wizards. They're dead you see." The dark-haired boy looked down, not meeting his eyes. So, it is Potter? Draco thought. Just as he was about to say something, Madam Malkins patted him on the shoulders, handing him a few brown paper packages tied up in strings "That's it boy. Here's your robes." Said Madam Malkins. She then signalled the dark-haired boy over to start measuring him.
"See you then" said Draco as he left the shop, hoping the conversation was polite enough that they can be friends but distant enough to make sure things go as planned. He can't help Harry directly until at least the third or fourth year.
The night before Draco was scheduled to leave for Hogwarts, Lucius Malfoy ordered him to come to his study for a chat. Draco took a deep breath before knocking on his father's door. A cold deep voice answered "Come in" Draco opened the door to see his father sitting behind a dark mahogany table which had piles of parchments and letters surrounded the edges. "Have a seat, Draco" Lucius said coldly. Draco did as he was told and sat on the on the chair opposite his father. "Draco, I need to chat with you about what I expect from you while at Hogwarts." Lucius stared at Draco intensely with his cold grey eyes "I expect you to behave as a Malfoy would. Do not show any weakness or mercy. Show them that purebloods are better than those half-breeds and mudbloods."
The mention of mudbloods gave Draco chills down his spine. "Yes, father" was all he could muster to say.
"I also want to inform you that Harry Potter will be attending Hogwarts this year. I want you to befriend him. Keep your friends close and your enemy closer Draco. I expect reports from you at least once a month about Potter." Lucius says in a sinister tone. All Draco could do was nod and said "Yes father, I understand. If that is all, I would like to retire for the night" Draco was eager to leave his father's study. Lucius nodded and waved his hand, gesturing him to leave.
"And Draco" His father added "Do not disappoint me" Lucius's cold remark sent chills down Draco's spine, all he could do was look back at his father and nod as he leaves the room. If Lucius Malfoy had that chilling effect on him, it will definitely be hard to undermine his plans. This is going to be harder than I think.
As the bell chimes 11, the train at platform 9 ¾ left Kings Cross station. Draco was heading towards the back of the train to find the rest of soon to be Slytherin posse, when he found Harry sitting by himself in an empty compartment. Draco thought it would be nice to quickly introduce himself before becoming a complete dick, but what would he say? "Err… Hi there" Draco opened the compartment door and began. Harry looked up at him with his emerald green eyes as it shone in the morning light streaming through the window, "You're the boy at Madame Malkins" he said excitedly.
"Yeah, the names Malfoy, Draco Malfoy." Draco quickly introducing himself while keeping an eye out on the corridor, just in case Weasley heads this way, like he knew he would. "I just wanted to tell you that it was nice meeting you the other day and… I'm sorry." Before Harry could reply about what Draco was sorry for, Draco had already left and headed towards the back of the train, not knowing that the next time they meet, Draco will be having to act like a complete git for the next 7 years.
The ride to Hogwarts flew by quickly. Draco spent most of it talking with Blaise and Pansy, trying to get as much childhood memories from them as possible. There were a few stories that was vaguely familiar, while some didn't really seem right, meanwhile, Crabbe and Goyle appointed themselves as Draco's bodyguard. Much like the books described, Crabbe and Goyle didn't seem very intelligent, this is useful when I need someone to protect me but don't necessarily ask as much questions. After the four-hour train ride, the first years takes the boats across the lake to the Hogwarts Castle. Draco couldn't believe his eyes. The castle seems to illuminate in the darkness, Draco could see the many grand features, the tall towers, buttresses that stretched out to the sides, and the lights shining through the windows. After the boat ride to the castle, they all followed a giant bearded man, who looks as if he was homeless, and a skinny balding man, almost hunched. Must be Hagrid and Filch Draco thought. Hagrid directed them towards a marble staircase with a dark wooden bannister, telling them to go up the stairs to meet Professor McGonagall. Draco took a deep breath and pushed his way up. This is the next encounter.
After McGonagall said her introductions, they were asked to wait. This is it. "So, it's true…. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts!" Draco sneered. Did he even sneer right? "This is Crabbe and Goyle" Draco introduced his so-called body- guards and moved towards Potter. Harry just looked at Draco in confusion. "The name is Malfoy, Draco Malfoy" said Draco reintroducing himself. Weasley sniggered at his name. "Do you think my name is funny, do you?" said Draco enraged. "No need to ask your name. Red hair, a hand- me -down robe you must be a Weasley! You will soon find out that some wizarding families are better than others, Potter." Draco warns "You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sorts." I hope he gets what I mean. When I warned him not to go making friends with the wrong sorts, I meant me.
"I think I can tell the wrong sorts for myself thanks" when harry said that, there was small glint in his eyes as if he was up to no good. Draco gulped at the thought Harry might screw up his plans.
The first years finally got into the great hall, ready for sorting. Professor McGonagall stood in front of the first years, calling out names alphabetically starting with Hannah Abbott. Draco barely listens to names being called out as his fellow gets sorted in their houses, all he could think about was that Harry Potter might ruin his plans. ….. Hermione Granger…. McGonagall called out. Draco snapped out of his thoughts and focused on Hermione. She has to end up in Gryffindor. A few minutes later, the hat shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Draco sighed in relief. The golden trio has to end up in Gryffindor. A few more names were called then it was Draco's turn. Draco smugly walked to the stool and sat down, from the book and movie, this should be a quick one. The hat should barely touch his head before yelling Slytherin. The hat was placed on head but did not yell his house as quickly as he thought. "…. Interesting…. you have a knowledge of what is yet to come. You also have plenty of courage and ambitions, but where should I place you?" Draco could feel the blood drain from his face. He has to be in Slytherin! Put me in Slytherin, you dirty old hat! I have to be there! Draco pleaded. "Are you sure?" The sorting hat asked, "sorting you to Gryffindor will help you achieve your goals faster." No. Draco thought. I have to be in Slytherin! "Alright Mr. Malfoy as you wish… Slytherin!" the sorting hat shouted. Oh, thank god! Draco thought. During his sorting ceremony, his heart was about to give in, he knows he mustn't shift the story too much or certain events won't happen. As he walked to the Slytherin table, he overheard Weasley whispering to Harry that all the bad wizards belong to Slytherin, warning him that it's the bad house. Draco sat on the Slytherin table, waiting for Harry's name to be called out, hoping that Harry has headed the warning of his ginger friend. "Harry Potter" Professor McGonagall called out. The whole room busts into whispers, and those at the back of the hall began to stand up a little to take a peek at the boy-who-lived. Harry sat at the stool and Professor McGonagall placed the sorting hat on his head. At first Harry looked like he was panicking, but as time went on, he seemed to be having a mental conversation with the hat. He then shut his eyes as he waits for the verdict. "… Gryffindor!" The sorting hat shouted. Harry was ecstatic at the result much like the rest of the Gryffindor house. As Harry walked over to the Gryffindor table, for a moment Draco caught Harry's eyes seeming a little melancholy. What was that look? Disappointment? Wishful thinking?
The rest of the year seem to go as planned; Draco spent the next few months taunting Harry whenever possible, inflating his 'Hero Complex', made fun of Ron and Hermione and often place harmless hexes on Longbottom. Last Draco heard before leaving Hogwarts for the holidays, the golden trio was looking for Nicholas Flammel, whom they won't find until early spring when the school semester begins.
Spring came, and now It's time to get a detention. The golden trio spent most of their spring days in the library looking for Nicholas Flammel, it wasn't until the day in the library Draco saw Hermione looking for a large specific book, murmuring to herself about where she knew she has read something about Nicholas Flammel. Draco, who leaned on the other side of shelf, realised that this is the night he follows the trio to Hagrid's hut, get the dragon sent away, get the trio in trouble and include himself in the detention.
Draco waited in the shadows outside the hut, careful not to be too close to the front door or the side window. It was not until the sun has really set when the trio came knocking in Hagrid's door. Predictable. Draco overheard the rest of their conversation, he occasionally peered at the small window, hoping one of them will see him. It was when Harry looked him straight in the eye that he knew he was finally discovered. Draco gave him one of his famous Malfoy smirks before running back into the castle to find Professor McGonagall.
The four of them stood in the transfiguration classroom as McGonagall lectured them about being out of bed. "… 50 points will be taken from your houses… each! And to make sure this won't happen again, the FOUR of you will be receive detention.
"Excuse me Professor, the FOUR of us?" Draco said in pretence disbelief.
"Yes, Mr Malfoy the FOUR of you. As honourable as your intentions were, you yourself is out of bed after hours. You too will join your classmates for detention" explained McGonagall.
A week later, the detention was finalised, they were to meet Filch by the castle door to lead the four kids to Hagrid where they will enter the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid then split the kids into two teams, Ron and Hermione are to go with Hagrid while Draco, Harry and Fang, Hagrid's slobbering dog, enter as another team. "Now listen, the Forest is a dangerous place. I found a unicorn dead a few weeks ago and one badly wounded by the entrance of the forest. It is our job to find the poor beast." Hagrid explained. Hagrid pointed at a path on the left "Harry, Malfoy, head down this path while we go on the other side. If you find any trouble, use the spell Periculum to send red sparks and I'll come and find you." Harry nodded and Draco just took a deep breath and began walking down the path.
Once Hagrid's team was out of ear shot, Harry seemed like he was bursting to ask Draco a question. "Go on then, I know you have a question for me" said Draco, this is not in the books, but I guess this was my fault when I talked to him in the train.
"Why did you apologise in the train?" he asked curiously.
"Because I know I'm going to be horrible to you while in your time at Hogwarts, and before you ask it's because I have an image to uphold."
Harry furled his eyebrows together, "Why can't we be friends?"
"Because if I become friends with you, my father will hear about it. It's best you to hate me." Draco said with disappointment in his voice. Suddenly, Harry grabbed Draco's arm. In front of them a hooded figure was leaning over a unicorn, silver unicorn blood sliding off the neck of the dead horse-like creature. They looked at each other and decided to back away slowly before the hooded figure notice them. It was when Harry accidentally stepped on a stick that the hooded figure noticed the two boys and floated towards them. Harry let out a scream while Draco jumped in front of Harry and instructed him to run before running away himself. He was trying to run as fast as he could but tripped on a trunk of a tree. The hooded figure was coming at him, Draco knew he was about to die again. Suddenly a centaur came out of nowhere scaring the hooded figure, saving him.
"T-thank you" Draco mumbled to the centaur.
"Shall I lead you towards the castle, boy?" the centaur offered kindly. Draco still in shock could only nod. They walked in silence until Draco saw Hagrid who asked, "You okay Malfoy?" Draco who was still slightly trembling said "I'm okay" as convincing as he could. Thank god this is last time he saves Harry's butt for the year. The rest is up to them.
