I'm Always Here For You
One
Lena watched Kara as she walked out of the room, leaving Lex to continue his speech. The Luthor woman checked to see if William would follow Kara but he gave no sign that he'd even noticed that Kara had gone anywhere. (And this was her new love interest?)
Lena moved through the small crowd and followed Kara down the hall.
"Kara."
Kara stopped at the sound of Lena's voice.
She licked her lips and tried to fight back tears.
Once she thought she had regained her composure, she turned around and gave Lena a very small smile.
Things were still not great between them and Kara was always wary of Lena, there was really no way of knowing what kind of reception she would receive from the Luthor woman but then it was Lena who had followed Kara out here.
"Lena." Kara said by way of greeting.
Lena took a few more steps towards the Kryptonian.
"I just saw you leave and you looked upset..."
Kara bowed her head as she felt those same tears come back. Losing Jeremiah was deeply upsetting and the fact that Lena, her best friend who more than anything in the world she'd wanted to talk to again, was now the one who seemed to be offering her the comfort she so desperately sought.
Kara sniffed and Lena moved a little closer.
"I'm sorry about Jeremiah." Lena said gently.
Kara looked up at her.
"Thank you...that means a lot."
Lena fidgeted slightly, looking back at the room where she was supposed to be supporting her brother.
Kara noticed.
"You don't have to stay here with me, Lena. If you want to go back, you can. I'll be fine."
Lena instantly shook her head.
"No, that's not-"
She stopped herself and let out a small, humourless chuckle.
"Just keep expecting to see William walking towards us."
Kara shrugged which caused Lena to frown.
"Aren't you and him...?"
Kara let out a breath.
"I don't know."
Then she looked down at her hands as she shook her head.
"I'm not even sure I like him in that way."
Lena felt something like hope in her heart but she knew better than to follow those feelings again. Those feelings that had caused her nothing but heartache and pain. No. She was here to comfort a friend. That was all.
Lena straightened.
"Do you maybe...want to get out of here?" She suggested.
Kara looked at her and shrugged.
"And go where?"
She sounded annoyed but Lena knew Kara's anger wasn't focused on her. Maybe at the state in which their friendship was currently in but not actually at Lena herself.
"Maybe we could grab a coffee or go to my place? Just somewhere where you can relax and...be yourself."
Kara scratched at her head underneath her fringe.
"I don't know, Lena. I mean you and I-"
"It's not about that. You're grieving and I...I want to help."
Kara looked into Lena's eyes, they held so much sincerity in them that it almost shocked Kara. She honestly thought that Lena would always hate her. Maybe there was hope for them?
Kara nodded her head a little and Lena couldn't help the smile that spread across her face.
"My place?"
Kara nodded and then followed Lena out of the building and to a waiting car.
"So how's Alex doing?" Lena asked as she came over with a mug of coffee that she handed to Kara.
"She's doing as well as can be expected. It's still hard, for the both of us."
Lena nodded as she sat beside Kara on the couch but she turned slightly so that she could face her.
"Look, Lena about what's gone on between us-"
Lena raised a hand to stop Kara from finishing that sentence.
"This is neither the time or the place, Kara. I said I wanted to help and I meant it but as for our friendship...I still don't know."
Kara nodded, feeling her heart sink.
What was the point in all this if it wasn't going to get them anywhere? Kara wondered.
Lena had shown that she wanted to help, that she still felt for Kara and wanted to comfort her, if that wasn't friendship Kara didn't know what was.
"I have something for you." Lena said suddenly, putting her mug down and standing up.
Kara frowned as she watched Lena walk over to where she'd put her bag by the door and reached into it.
When she walked back over, she handed a book out to Kara.
"I was going to give this to you later but I guess now is as good a time as any."
Kara took the book and smiled at the cover.
Lena explained as Kara looked down at it.
"It helped me...with my mom, dealing with the grief and just...everything."
Kara nodded, that same smile on her face as she put the book in her own bag.
"Thank you, Lena."
Lena sat back down and placed her hands in her lap. She looked so tense and Kara wished it wasn't awkward between them. She knew that Lena didn't want to talk about it but Kara needed to. Everything in her life was so uncertain right now and she desperately wanted her best friend back.
Kara put her own half finished coffee down and looked at Lena with what she hoped was an endearing smile.
"You know you said you wanted to help?"
Lena nodded without hesitation.
Kara took a breath and reached out, taking one of Lena's hands in her own.
"I want my best friend back, Lena."
Lena tensed up even more if that was possible, and looked down at their hands.
"Kara, I...I don't kn-"
"You don't have to say anything right now just...please, here me out."
Lena nodded her head slowly.
Kara licked her lips nervously before she began pouring her heart out.
"I miss you, Lena. I miss you so much and I hate that I lied to you and I hate how you found out and if I could go back and make things right, I would do it in a heartbeat. I hate that after years of being betrayed, I went and did the same thing to you.
I'm sorry, for all of it and I know I warned you that if you ever started acting like a villain I would treat you like one but-but that's just not you, Lena. You could never be a villain. You're too good and kind and...I was foolish and stupid to do what I did. I just want to put all this behind us."
Kara paused to look at Lena's expression. Lena's eyes were filled with unshed tears.
"I'm asking you, Lena, please...can you forgive me?"
Lena's lips parted and the tears fell.
"You can't keep doing this to me, Kara." She whispered, her voice shaking.
"I won't. I'll never lie to you again, Lena." Kara assured her and her grip on Lena's hand tightened just a little to add weight to her words.
"It's not just the lying, Kara. I trusted you...I said I would never trust anyone again and then I did and-"
"I know, I know but Lena I swear if-if you give me another chance. If we can go back to how we were, I'll never hurt you again."
Lena looked into watery blue eyes and her own features softened.
"I want to believe you...I really do."
"You can. Lena we're no good apart, you know that."
"I know." Lena admitted.
With her free hand, Lena wiped away a tear and smirked a little.
"you know, since all this happened with us, nothing has gone right for me? I know I have Lex's backing with the experiments and trials but it just...it doesn't feel right. I honestly don't feel like I'm achieving anything. Even when I am."
Kara stayed quiet, allowing Lena to say whatever was on her mind.
Lena looked at Kara then.
"But I felt like I had the whole world at my feet when I was with you. When you took that away from me...it broke something in me all over again, Kara and I can't go through it again. If we're going to do this again, I need to be sure that you'll always be there. That you won't ever betray me."
"I won't. Lena, I never wanted to be betray you. I wanted to tell you about me being Supergirl so many times."
Lena looked down until Kara lifted Lena's chin.
"Lena, look at me." She said softly.
Lena did and Kara gave her a small, encouraging smile.
"I promise you, I will never ever hurt you again."
Lena stared at Kara, almost as if she was trying to read her.
More than anything, Lena wanted to forgive Kara. To have her best friend back and continue on like nothing had ever happened. What she wouldn't give to have Kara back in her life but she was scared. She was scared of the pain, of the trust she would have to give back to Kara over time and what if there came a day when Kara couldn't keep her promise and she did betray Lena again?
Kara had assured her it wouldn't happen but Lena's trust issues were a lot worse now. And why wouldn't they be?
Could she really go back to trusting Kara? Just like that?
"Lena?" Kara said gently, pulling the Luthor from her thoughts.
"I know it's scary and I know you're going to find it hard but you can trust me, Lena."
Lena gently removed her hand from Kara's.
"I know this is what you want, Kara and I said I wanted to help but you're asking a lot...I-I need some time. To think."
Kara nodded that she understood but she couldn't help but feel hopeful.
Lena would consider it. Kara knew she would.
Lena wasn't the type of woman to say 'I'll think about it' and not actually think about it.
Kara stood and gave Lena a small smile.
"Ok. If that's what you need. Just...let me know either way. I need to know...for myself and where we stand, you know?"
Lena nodded that she understood.
"Of course."
Kara headed for the door.
"Where are you going?" Lena asked with a confused frown.
Kara paused.
"Well you said you need time...I thought you meant now."
Lena stood, her frown deepening.
"Well you can't leave yet. I ordered pizza."
Kara chuckled and Lena's frown morphed into a grin.
