Two

Kara opened the door to Alex the next night with a big smile on her face.

"You're early!" Kara said cheerily.

Alex raised her eyes brows as she watched her sister go over to the fridge and pull out a bottle of wine.

"And you're...happy."

Kara nodded as she filled their glasses.

"I am. Wanna know why?"

Alex nodded as she shrugged out of her jacket and sat down.

"Always."

"Lena said she'd think about us becoming friends again." Kara confessed as a big smile refused to leave her face.

Alex tried to be happy for her sister but she was understandably wary.

"That's uh...that's great...Kara but um, don't you think you should maybe not be so hopeful?"

Kara looked at Alex and shook her head but a worried expression tarred that beautiful bright smile.

"Well it's Lena, if she says she'll think about it, she will." Kara said as she placed bowls of chips on the table.

"I know but what if it's not the answer you want? Lena might not want to give your friendship another go."

Kara's frown deepened.

"You really know how to kill movie night, you know that?"

Alex gave her a small, kind smile.

"I'm just looking out for you, Kara. I know how much all of this has hurt you and I don't want to see you go through that again."

Kara nodded as she took a seat next to Alex.

"I know and I appreciate that but let's just see how it goes. Tonight, we're gonna watch this movie and just try and forget all our problems."

Alex nodded and picked up her wine glass, clinking it with Kara's.

"Sounds like a plan."

...

Lena sat alone in her apartment.

She had told Kara she needed some time to think and that's exactly what she was doing.

She was going over all of their conversations, things they had told each other, the times when they'd had each others backs and when they'd saved each other's lives. Then she went over the betrayal and it stung all over again. It stung so much in fact that Lena got up to get herself a glass of whiskey.

The sky was pitch black save for all the lights of National city making it look a little brighter than it actually was.

Lena smiled as she remembered why she'd come to National City in the first place; her goal had been to share her home with a kryptonian and to help her in her mission to save the world and she'd done that, was continuing to do that; she just hadn't realised that the kryptonian she'd been helping had also been her best friend.

Sighing, Lena drained the first drink and poured herself another.

She glanced over at the picture of herself and Kara and a small smile touched her lips.

She wished she could go back to those days; when Kara had just been Kara and she'd been able to confide in her, trust her too. She missed how safe Kara made her feel.

Lena's thoughts were interrupted by a knock at her door.

She frowned and put her drink down.

Who was calling this late?

Opening the door, she found Kara standing on the other side.

"Kara, what are you-"

Before Lena could finish her sentence, Kara had moved past her and into the Luthor's home.

Lena blinked, slightly shocked and shut the door.

"I know you said you needed time to think about it but I can't do this, Lena. I-I need to know."

Lena folded her arms, looking at Kara.

"I have been thinking. Tonight actually."

Kara paused.

"Oh..."

Lena frowned.

"Why do you need to know so badly?"

Kara licked her lips.

"Well I was with Alex tonight and she told me not get my hopes up because you might not ever want to be friends again and I tried telling her that, no, she couldn't predict that but then she left and I couldn't shake this horrible feeling I had that she could be right and I..." Kara took a breath as she looked at Lena.

"...I had to see you. I-I have to know."

Lena felt her resolve softening as she watched Kara holding back tears.

She unfolded her arms and gently took one of Kara's hands.

"Why don't you come and sit down?" She suggested softly.

Kara nodded and sat down next to Lena, wiping under her glasses.

They sat in silence for a little while until Lena spoke up.

"Why did you use the front door?"

Kara sniffed and looked up.

"What?"

"You could've used the balcony like you normally do."

"Oh um...I guess I wanted to come to you as Kara tonight. You always see me as Supergirl and maybe it's -I dunno- maybe it's painful for you."

Lena nodded.

"It is...a little." She admitted.

Kara looked down and let out a breath.

"I'm sorry I stormed in like that but I can't sleep and I-"

Lena held up a hand.

"I know, Kara. It's alright."

Kara glanced up at Lena.

"I'm sorry to keep pushing this but have you...have you made a decision?"

Lena frowned and looked down at her hands.

"I miss you, Kara."

Kara's heart filled with hope.

"I miss you too."

"But-"

"But what?"

Lena couldn't look up. She couldn't look into those eyes and lie. She couldn't look into those eyes and tell the truth either.

This was the best that she could give Kara but she would also give her the option.

"I can lie to you...or I can tell you the truth but I am afraid that the truth would seal our fate anyway...but the choice is up to you, Kara."

Kara took a breath.

She didn't like that if Lena told her the truth, it might mean they were done but if she lied then that could mean they could continue to be friends but it wouldn't truly be what Lena wanted and although Kara wanted more than anything to be back in Lena's life, she couldn't live yet another lie and she couldn't let Lena live it either.

She deserved more than that.

She deserved better than that.

Kara looked straight into Lena's eyes.

"I want the truth, Lena."

Lena nodded.

"Are you sure?"

"Our friendship was built on lies. At least, that must be how it feels to you. If we're going to start this, be it apart or together, it needs to be honest."

Lena gave her a small smile.

That was all she'd ever wanted.

Lena looked down again.

"Kara, I can't ever be your friend again."

And just like that, Kara felt her heart being ripped in two. She knew this was coming. She had felt it but she hadn't been prepared for how awful it would make her feel.

How she could be sitting right next to Lena and still feel so far away from her?

Kara's eyes began to fill with tears but she nodded.

"Ok...if that's what you-"

"I can't be friends with you...because I'm in love with you."

Silence so thick it was like fog, seemed to envelope them. No one said anything and no noise could be heard, not even from the open door to the balcony.

It was like time had stood still.

Lena risked a glance up at Kara but she was staring at the open balcony door.

Then Lena watched as Kara silently stood and went out onto the balcony.

Lena forced back tears and followed her outside.

Kara kept her back to her so Lena stayed where she was, in the doorway.

"I understand this must be difficult to hear. You want a friendship with me and I...Kara I don't know what I want but I won't hide how I feel. Not about you."

Kara still didn't say anything.

Lena took a step forward.

She had built herself such a reputation on being Lena Luthor, the CEO of L Corp who wasn't afraid of anyone or anything and here she was and she was so scared of Kara's rejection but she had confessed now and there really was no going back.

"Kara, can you just say something...please, don't just ignore me. I need to know how you feel. Good or bad. Disgusted or confused, I don't care, just please...talk to me."

Kara finally turned around slowly, a frown on her face but she looked more bewildered than anything.

"How long have you felt like this?"

Lena shrugged.

"Honestly, I'm not sure...maybe I've always felt like it, I just never realised. I mistook my feelings towards you for friendship when it was something more."

Kara swallowed.

"What-what about James and-and Jack?"

Lena shook her head.

"I loved them...just not in the way I love you."

Kara looked down and Lena took another step towards her.

"I can see how much this is upsetting you. Maybe you should go."

Kara shook her head.

"No...no I don't want to."

"Then what-what do you want?" Lena asked but she felt distressed by Kara's mood, it was so out of character for her.

"I don't know but I...I never expected this. I just asked you to consider being friends again. I didn't know that you couldn't because...because of how you felt."

Lena sighed.

"When you lied to me. It broke my heart. It took me a long time to get over it and then you asked me if we could try again. I wanted to. I really did want that, Kara but if I wasn't honest, if I didn't admit the truth then it'd just be one more lie and I didn't want that. It's why I had to tell you."

Kara nodded her head slowly but she didn't say anything.

"Kara, just tell me what you want."

The blonde looked up at Lena and then moved towards her.

"It's just us here, right? No one else?"

Lena looked around with a confused frown then she looked at Kara again.

"It's just us."

Kara nodded and moved closer to her.

Kara was inches away from Lena and she cupped her face in both hands gently.

"I'm sorry it's taken us so long."

Then gently, she pressed her lips to Lena's and just like that, everything fell into place; this felt right, for both of them.

Kara had never imagined that she could ever feel this way about someone and she never in her wildest dreams thought that Lena would ever feel this way about her.

Tears ran down Kara's face, spilling onto Lena's cheeks as the Luthor deepened the kiss.

This was why the betrayal had hurt Lena so much. This wasn't just one friend lying to another. This was someone who Lena loved with her whole heart who had lied to her.

Kara sobbed against Lena's mouth and the Luthor pulled back in shock.

"Kara?"

"Lena, I'm so...I'm sorry..." Kara cried.

Lena held her close.

"It's alright, Kara. It's fine."

"It's not-not fine. I hurt you and I didn't realise how badly until just now. I-I'm sorry, Lena."

Lena tightened her hold on Kara, stroking her hair.

"It's ok...it's ok, Kara."

Kara cried openly and all Lena could do was hold her.

When Kara had calmed down enough, Lena looked at her and wiped her eyes gently, smiling warmly at her.

Kara sniffled and touched her hand to Lena's cheek once more.

"I love you, Lena."

Relief flooded Lena like a wave and she felt everything disappear; all the hurt, anger, confusion, the bitterness that had been setting in, she let everything go and just focused on the woman in front of her. The kryptonian she loved and the woman she would always love.

Author's Note: If the show could give these two a happy ending then that would be great but if not, then we will always have fanfiction like this ;)
