AN: Disclaimer, I never post series unless I have finished them first. I've left a few too many fans hanging that way, but this story is calling me to share so here I am sharing it with the world. Enjoy chapter 1!
Tony walked through the open hallways uncomfortably. This was not his scene. His scene was someplace with lots of intoxicated people, someplace not so… serious. Even after becoming Iron Man, he had tried to keep a degree of levity in his life.
Yeah, there was nothing "light" about a children's cancer ward. There was also nothing he could do. He fixed machines, not people. But one of the kids from the Make-A-Wish foundation had demanded that all they wanted was to meet Tony Stark, and so here he was. Originally the kid was supposed to come to the tower, he was going to show them around, though what an eight-year-old would be interested at the tower was beyond him. But the kid had taken a turn for the worse and had to stay in the hospital, which led Tony to very far outside his comfort zone.
The nurse led him to the room, her eyes glancing at him nervously, a tad bit starstruck, but still doing her job. She walked to the door, glanced at him one more time. He nodded. Could she tell he was nervous?
She knocked softly on the door and led him inside.
"Peter! Look who's here!" she said excitedly.
Tony stepped into the room with his usual flourish and a big smile. It was hard not to let it falter when he saw the kid on the bed. The child was hooked up to so many things he seemed more machine than human. He was also bald as a newborn baby… not much bigger than one too.
"Mr. Stark!" The child said excitedly.
"Hey, kid!" Tony said. He glanced behind him to Happy for support, but the man had stayed outside to keep the room from getting too crowded. Traitor.
"Mom! Dad!" Peter turned to his parents. "It's Mr. Stark."
His mom had a big smile on her face despite the exhausted circles under her eyes. His dad had a slightly smaller smile on his face. Tony was surprised to realize they both looked familiar.
"Hi," he stated with a weak wave. "I'm Tony."
"We've met," the dad said, holding out a hand which Tony shook, albeit a little reluctantly. "Dr. Richard Parker. My wife Dr. Mary Parker."
Tony vaguely remembered, they were geneticists working for Oscorp, or at least they were when he met them five years ago. Their work back then had been astounding and he had been eager to see where they would take it, but the work had fallen behind in recent years. Tony glanced at their son, now he could see why.
"I remember," Tony stated awkwardly, not sure what else to say. He turned to the sick kid in the bed, who, even with his excitement, hadn't even sat up.
"And who is this?" he asked.
"I'm Peter!" The boy said excitedly.
"Hi, Peter, I'm Tony," he said again.
"I know," Peter said, causing his mom to chuckle.
"I'm sorry I couldn't bring the suit today kid, they wouldn't let me bring it into the hospital."
"That's okay, I've already seen it," Peter said.
Tony's eyebrows raised as he glanced at the Parker doctors.
"Oh yeah?" Tony asked.
Peter twisted over to grab a picture from his nightstand table, stretching the wires. His mom stepped forward quickly to help, handing him a frame, which Peter then handed to Tony.
Tony glanced down at it. It was of a kid wearing an iron man mask at the Stark Expo. His heart did a funny little flip. Nice work, kid.
"I remember you too," he murmured, he cleared his throat. "You're a brave kid."
"Foolhardy more like it," Richard Parker chimed in teasingly.
"Daaad," Peter whined. The adults chuckled.
"I heard you like Legos, Pete," Tony stated stepping up and pulling out a complex build of the Avengers Quinjet, complete with every single one of the Avengers. Tony had been surprised when he saw it and hadn't even glanced at the price.
Peter's eyes lit up. "Woah!" His parents also looked surprised. Tony smiled. "What do you say, should we open it up?" he asked.
Peter nodded dazedly. Soon they were dumping all the pieces onto the tray pulled up to Peter's bed.
"I don't think this guy looks anything like me," Tony grumbled as he held up the tiny Iron Man.
Peter giggled bringing a smile to the billionaire's face, he held up a tiny hulk. "Hulk smash!" he cried out. He brought the green figure down on the bricks they had been building until they broke apart.
The boy winced. "Oops."
Tony just laughed and started putting the pieces back together. He was surprised how quickly Peter was able to assemble the pieces, between the two of them they had it together in no time. Peter started flying it around while Tony made tiny iron man steal tiny Cap's shield and tiny Thor's hammer.
Peter laughed as Tony held up Thor. "You are not worthy to hold the hammer!"
Peter clutched his arms to his chest and rolled backwards as he laughed, Tony couldn't help but laugh in return. The kid's laughter was infectious. Suddenly Peter started coughing though.
His mom jumped to his side, rubbing circles around his back. Tony stepped back, suddenly worried he had broken the kid.
"Is he okay?" Tony asked.
"Yeah," she smiled tiredly. "This happens sometimes, just give him a minute."
Tony waited and sure enough the coughing subsided after a time. Peter looked absolutely beat afterwards though. He made a show of glancing at his watch a few minutes later.
"Well, that's all the time I have for today, kid," he said.
"Thanks, Mr. Stark," the boy murmured tiredly. "Can I see you again?"
"Peter…" Mary quickly said.
"Sure," Tony interrupted her. "I'd love too. Same time next week?"
Peter nodded excitedly. Tony smiled and then swept out the door. Happy had found a chair nearby and promptly fell asleep. He checked his watch for real this time, it had been over an hour, but it had felt like just a few minutes.
A voice behind him stopped him before he could wake up his security guard and moral support.
"Stark!" He turned to see the frustrated face of Richard Parker.
"You can't just tell a kid something like that and not follow up," Richard scolded.
Tony frowned. "I intend to follow it up."
Richard scoffed. "I know you, Stark," he growled. "You're not exactly one to keep your promises."
Tony's mouth opened and shut, he glanced back towards the room with the sick little boy inside.
"A lot has changed in the last five years," Tony finally said, he met Richard's eyes. "For both of us."
Richard looked tired too, now that Tony looked at him. "I'll see you next week, Dr. Parker."
Richard hesitated, and then finally nodded once. "You better," he said.
Tony turned and shook Happy awake. "A lot of good you are," he grumbled as the man tried to get his bearings.
