AN: Sorry it's been a few days. I have the next two or three chapters written, but I'm also working on another series. I'll write more about that one near the end of this one. I won't be posting them at the same time. Enjoy!
Peter tried to listen to his uncle… he really did try. He didn't want to put his last living relatives in danger. But the walls of his apartment were paper thin, he could hear everything that happened outside. Mostly it was just cars honking… constantly. Occasionally a fight that broke out on the street, or a car crash that he might have been able to prevent if he was already in his suit and outside, those were the hardest to listen to, he was left praying that nobody was seriously injured, without having the ability of ever knowing.
But what finally had him dawn the suit again, was a high-pitched scream. The sound was muffled, like someone was trying to cover her mouth, and with the sound of traffic in the night, it was more than possible that no one could hear her, but Peter did.
Quick as a flash he pulled on the costume and slipped out his window. He normally changed in a nearby alley, but he knew he had to move quickly. Swinging into the alley just a block from his building, the same one he normally changed in, he saw the man pinning the girl down while his buddy rifled through he purse. She didn't look like she was that much older than Peter, wearing a Burger King uniform, probably on her way home after a late-night shift.
"Ay!" Peter shouted drawing the muggers' attention. "I know her shirt says burger king, but I don't think she's hiding a tiara in that purse."
"Get lost, kid!" The mugger holding the girl shouted.
"Don't you know every princess has a bodyguard?" Spider Man quipped back.
The man held the knife he had been holding close to the girl's face and pointed it at Peter.
"Leave now and nobody get's hurt," the man threatened.
It was the moment Peter had been waiting for. He flicked a web out and pulled the knife out of the man's hand. The man shouted in surprise, but before he could react further Peter was flying through the air, landing a kick to the man's face. Now knocked to the ground, Peter webbed his hands to the concrete.
His friend stood up from where he had been rummaging through the girl's bag, brandishing his own knife. He swung it at Peter who dodged easily, grabbing the man's wrist gently (for him) and twisting carefully until he dropped the knife. Peter didn't want to hurt anyone, he just wanted to make sure the girl was safe. With the weapon out of the way Peter threw the man up against the wall and webbed him to it, both muggers now incapacitated. He turned back to the young girl, probably about sixteen.
"You alright, princess?" Peter asked.
She nodded a little dazed. "T-thank you…" she bent down to pick up her stuff, but Peter stopped her.
"Leave that for the police," he ordered. "This guy had his grubby hands all over it, they'll want to get his fingerprints."
The girl nodded. "Oh, by the way, you should probably call 911," Peter finished.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket and began dialing as he started walking away.
"You're not leaving?" she asked, still sounding shaken.
"Nah," Peter assured. "I'm just gonna stay out of sight when the police arrive."
She nodded, feeling safer. He felt bad, he wanted to comfort her, but he couldn't risk being seen. Ben's words came back to haunt him. He did wait, though, until the police showed up, watching them from a fire escape high above the alley.
When he was sure she was safe he swung to the top of the nearest building. Glancing down one more time he got ready to jump, but a familiar sound stopped him. He had heard it before… a long time ago.
"Iron Man," he said, turning as the suit landed behind him. "How did you find me?"
"What makes you think I was looking?" Iron Man asked after landing with a clunk.
Peter swallowed. Of course, Tony…Iron Man… didn't know who he really was. Suddenly he was glad of the mask, and all that it hid, not just his identity, but the emotions he knew his face always betrayed. Peter wasn't prepared to face the man under the mask, the kind man who had visited him on a regular basis ever since he was a small child. The man who had read to him on his worst days, and played with him on his best days.
"What do you want?" Peter asked, using a thicker New York accent to disguise his voice, he thought it made him sound a little older.
Iron Man shrugged. "Just a chat, maybe you can answer a few questions of mine."
"Uh…" Peter started. "No offense, Mr. Stark, but I got places to be," he threw his thumb over his shoulder. He hesitated though. Maybe Iron Man knew about his parents research, maybe there was something he could tell him.
"I'll keep it quick," Iron Man offered. "You obviously don't have anyone helping you."
Peter winced, glad for the mask.
"Nah, I fly solo," Peter responded, still trying to keep his tough guy voice.
"I'd like to offer my assistance. I can give you a full upgrade, you're in dire need of it," Iron Man offered.
Peter felt his suspicions rise. He was beginning to think more like Uncle Ben. Tony Stark, billionaire business man, would not be offering him his assistance free of charge. He wanted something in return.
"What's the catch?" Peter asked.
Iron Man held up his hands. "No catch, just maybe you do me a favor in the future."
Peter thought about it, but then shook his head. "Maybe you answer a few questions of mine then," Peter started.
It was Iron Man's turn to look suspicious. "What do you have in mind?"
Peter was about to answer but stopped short when he heard the unmistakable sound of a gunshot… coming from his apartment building.
"What?" Iron Man asked, noticing his distraction.
"Uh… I gotta go," Spider-Man responded "It was nice chattin with you!" With that Peter jumped, free falling for a minute before latching his web on a nearby building. He was gone before Iron Man could even activate his thrusters.
AN: Tony! You had him right in front of you! Gah….
So I tried to write a Brooklyn accent, because in homecoming when he's trying to disguise his voice he makes his accent thicker, but I failed utterly. I still felt like it was a good addition to the story so I tried to write it without… writing it. Anyway, if it was confusing or annoying please leave a review with your constructive criticism. Thanks!
I'm also stuck on an action scene in one of the future chapters… I just don't write action scenes well. I was pleased with this chapter, but there was minimal action going on. Going to try and do some research so that I can make this story as engaging as possible. Wish me luck!
Stay healthy! Stay safe! Wash your hands!
God bless!
