The Winter Doctor
Winter Ezekiel Freya sighed as she pulled on a dark blue hoodie. Her stick-straight white hair was flowing behind her, giving no contrast to her porcelain skin. Her eyes were a piercing grey with flecks of electric blue, shining with intelligence and depth. She was tall and skinny, having no chest not butt. She pulled her hair into a high ponytail, her hair still reaching her lower back. Winter sighed again. Why was she stuck at a retail job? She was so sure that getting a degree at eighteen would guarantee her a job. Nope. Now Winter was stuck working at a Henrik's clothing store, two miles from her apartment. The worst part? Winter didn't own a car and public transportation was hell to her SAD (social anxiety disorder). In fact most transportation had her panicking. Winter just picked up her phone, slipping in ear buds as she walked out of her house. She turned on some ACDC and jogged out, not ready for today.
Hours later
Winter stood up from her cashier stool, ready to hurry home and read some. Henrik's was about to close and was dark. She wanted to leave as soon as possible, but a high-pitched voice crushed those hopes. "Winter?" a shrill voice called. Winter groaned, it was her stereotypical white girl co-worker: Rose.
"Yea?" She called back, hoping it was nothing. Rose was standing off to the side, holding a bag of something and some keys.
"I'm bringing some tickets to Wilson, do you mind locking the basement?" She asked. Yes she did mind, but Rose was her 'better'. Honestly she and Rose were the same age, but Rose had dropped out of high school and had been working for a while. Winter groaned.
"Fine" she yelled back. Winter forced herself to stand up and walk. She was grumbling the entire way as she walked down the stairs, wanting to go home.
"Wilson? Wilson you there? I got your tickets Wilson" she heard Rose yell from the basement. She came to the storage door and put the key in the lock, fully intending to book it when she was done. a loud bang sounded from inside the storage room. Probably an animal. She cautiously opened the door, waiting for some animal to attack her. Inside was dark and warm, giving off a creepy vibe. Nothing was moving and the source of the noise had not shown itself. She sighed in relief when nothing happened. Rose came up beside her and another bang sounded. "Is someone muckin' about" Rose called into the storage room. Honestly, how dense. They walked inside, investigating the noises, while Rose spouted more nonsense about practical jokes.
Suddenly, Winter saw movement from the corner of her eye. She walked over slowly, expecting some large animal again, but her breath hitched at what she saw. A mannequin was crouching besides a generator poised to attack Rose. Winter even saw it slither forward. It's movements were robotic, but it was clearly plastic. An auton? Winter took a pole from a discarded rack and raised it above her head. She had no idea where it was receiving signals from, so she aimed for the neck joint. She slammed it down, severing the head and startling Rose. Winter saw others creeping from the shadows and grabbed the head and Rose's hand, leading Rose towards the back door where she promptly ran into a man.
Doctor's POV
The Doctor had been running through an old clothing store. He had waited until it was closed and he was ready to enact his plan. He held his sonic in one hand and the bomb in another. In front of him was the back entrance into the store. He readied himself and threw open the door and ran inside, right into two young girls. He looked up in shock, not expecting anyone to be inside. The doctor silently cursed and looked at the two figures before him. There was an average height girl in the back. She had bleach blonde hair and her roots were growing out. She was wearing a painfully pink shirt and a purple skirt. Her hair was obviously straightened, and she had makeup caked on her face. She looked startled. He looked at the one who had run into him. She was taller than the other, but a lot skinnier. She was flat and had bleached hair as well. He took a second look and reassessed that statement looking closely. She had naturally white hair and practically white skin. She wasn't wearing makeup and had in a Tardis colored hoodie and pale jeans. Her eyes were a striking blue-grey, piercing into your soul. He shook himself out of his assessment as the pale girl spoke.
Winter's FP POV
"Hello?" I waved my hand. He seemed to snap out of something. The man in front of me was tall and leather clad. He had big ears and blue eyes that seemed old. He was staring at us, and hadn't said a thing. Feeling stupid, I spoke again. "Well there are... dolls after us so we should run" I said awkwardly. I had a bad habit of dumbing things down, so dolls seemed like a good word. His head snapped up.
"What? Oh yes we should" he said. He looked behind us into the darkness and stiffened. He saw auton behind us. "Well... RUN" he shouted as he grabbed my hand pulling me through the door which turned around out to be the service lift. I staggered after him, being half-pulled into the elevator. Rose quickly followed, tripping inside. He shut it behind the three of us and pointed his glowing metal tube at it. We were rising now, and Rose seemed to be panting. I was fine and the man looked unfazed.
"You pulled his 'ead off" Rose gasped as she looked at the disembodied head. I nodded and so did the man.
"Yup. Plastic" he said. So he knew what they were. Rose didn't look convinced, and she looked angry.
"Very clever. What was that then? Students? Were those things students?" She asked. I laughed silently. Honestly? Students? That's got to be the worst explanation. I was about to correct her when the man spoke cutting me off.
"Students? Why students?" He asked as the door dinged open. I shook my head and the man finally noticed me.
"Oh hello. Do you think they are students as well?" He said in a condescending tone. I was so tired of people treating me like that that a snapped back.
"they're not students" I said angrily and Rose glared at me.
"Well how do you know?" She asked accusingly. I sighed, hating that I had to explain myself, but at the same time glad I had a chance to explain myself.
"Well, my hypothesis is that they are some type of remotely controlled auton. For one, each head is solidly plastic, so no human could see through it. They seemed to understand where they were going and were following us pretty accurately, so they could not be a local remote control. It's more likely that this is advanced AI that has sensing capabilities and could sense our locations. It also seems to have limited knowledge of how to do simple tasks saying that it hasn't come up the elevator. I'm assuming they took the form of mannequins because they are conspicuous and I'm also taking a guess that this is widespread, saying that there is no motive for Hendrik's to be attacked. Also they didn't seem to friendly so they can't be students, plus it is near impossible to get that many people together during school, especially college" I finished my observation. I suddenly realized what I'd just said. Great now they'll think I'm a show off like most people do. Ugh, I can't do anything right I'm such an idiot. I saw Rose sneer slightly at me. Yup. There it is. I saw the man just looking at me. I sighed.
"That was" he began and I prepared for some insult. "Fantastic" he said. I was taken aback. What? He said fantastic. He didn't think I was showing off. That's a first time happening. The man started pointing his metal tube at the exit door and it unlocks. Rose looks put off, but I am internally beaming. We walk through the door into the lot behind Henrik's.
"Well whoever they are Wilson is going to call the police on them" Rose seemingly trying to prove her worth in this situation. The man frowns and turns her way,
"Who's Wilson"
"The chief electrician" Rose answers. The man's face falters for a moment.
"Wilson is dead". I grimace. There it goes again, someone around me is dead. Rose looked horrified.
"That's just not funny. That's sick!" she shouts. I frowned. She thought this was a joke. It was clearly more serious than that.
"Hold on. Mind your eyes" the man says as he points the metal tube at the door. It sparks violently.
"I've had enough of this now" Rose shouted. I kind of agreed, wanting to go home. "Who are you, then? Who's that lot down there? I said, who are they?" She demands. She still thinks they're people.
"They're made of plastic. Living plastic creatures. Your friend here was pretty close. They're being controlled by a relay device in the roof, which would be a great big problem if I didn't have this" he said as he held a small explosive in his hand. "So, I'm going to go up there and blow them up, and I might well die in the process, but don't worry about me. No, you go home. Go on. Go and have your lovely beans on toast. Don't tell anyone about this, because if you do, you'll get them killed" he told Rose. He started running off, but he suddenly opened the door. "I'm the Doctor by the way. Who are you?" He asked grinning like a madman. I'm hesitant to answer, but Rose doesn't pause.
"Rose". I sighed.
"Winter" I reluctantly say. He grins.
"Alright Rose, Winter. RUN!" He shouts as he runs back inside. Rose and I run as fast as possible across the street, almost being run over We turned around and watched to store behind us. After a bit,it goes up in flames with a loud bang. Everything was burning around them and chunks of the store were flying off of it. Rose looked scared and called a taxi, but I began jogging home, thinking about what the strange man had said about "living plastic".
Third Person POV
Winter stepped inside her apartment and locked the door behind her. She tiredly threw the disembodied head onto the couch, but quickly scooped it up again. She didn't know if it could suddenly come alive again or not, so she locked it in a large jar just to be safe. Winter took a knife and laid it by her computer as she sat down. It never hurt to be a little cautious. Winter sat down at the computer and turned it on, clicking on Google to search information about the Doctor. She started to type and searched up the Doctor using different key words. She found a couple sights she knew they could be a danger to anyone who found them. The Doctor seemed to be a dangerous man so she hacked into Google's search results monitoring searches about the Doctor and similar key words. Learning to hack seemed to pay off. Winter took down her hair and ran a hand through it. It was ashy from the explosion. Winter looked down. Her clothes were stained as well and her hair was grey and gritty. She knew she needed to wash it, but she couldn't bring herself to move. She just sat silently and contemplated her life. She did this frequently whenever something big happened.
The next morning Winter grumbled and rolled off the chair. Great, she'd fallen asleep at her desk. Good news though, nobody had searched up the three websites she was monitoring. She stood up and stretched the sleep out of her limbs. Winter grabbed some clothes and took a shower, trying to wash the ash out that was dirtying her starch white hair. She finished showering and put on her clothes. She was wearing a grey sweater and jeans and had black boots on. Her hair was braided and came down to her lower back. She looked at herself in the mirror. The ever-present sadness shone in her eyes and her skin looked almost white. She remembered people calling her albino when she was a child. She would cry when she was little. Winter honestly didn't mind now. She walked out of the bathroom, and heard her door unlocking. She didn't know who it could be She She was still paranoid from last night. She immediately grabbed the knife and hid it behind her wrist waiting for the intruder by the door. She held her breath as the door opened, and as it swung open her reflexes kicked in. She grabbed the arm of the intruder, and twisted it behind his back. She slammed him against a wall and held the knife at his throat. She was panting from adrenaline.
"Oi! What'd you do that for" the intruder shouted. Winter registered who it was and growled.
"So, 'Doctor' what are you doing in my house" she demanded. He looked taken aback, then seemed to recognize her.
"I was looking for plastic autons" he said. She lowered her knife and let go of his arm, but quickly stepped back, knife at the ready again. She wasn't taking any chances with the stranger that blew up her job. He seemed unfazed and looked around until he spotted the head in the jar. "Ah smart move. Locking that thing up" he said motioning at the head. Winter lowered the knife slightly.
"Why are they after you?" She demanded. He seemed surprised that she'd figured it out. "More importantly, why would you go to the middle of a city knowing dangerous creatures are after you, and that they could injure people" she shouted. It really was a reckless thing to do when you think of it. The Doctor just started walking out and Winter followed him out. "Well? Are you going to answer me or did the alien boy not think of that?" She demanded again. He looked up at her sharply. She laughed internally knowing why he did. "Yeah, I do know. I mean you show up here knowing about this Nestene Consciousness and how to defeat it, then survive an explosion. Then you show up in pictures from hundreds of years ago? It's kind of obvious y'know" she said. He looked surprised.
"Fantastic" he muttered. Winter growled.
"Thats all you have to say for yourself? Just who are you?" she asked. He looked at her sharply.
"You know how the Earth revolves around the sun? It's like when you were a kid. The first time they tell you the world's turning and you just can't quite believe it because everything looks like it's standing still. I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour, and the entire planet is hurtling round the sun at sixty seven thousand miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go. That's who I am. Now, forget me, Winter. Go home." He said, looking towards her, but not at her. He started walking away quickly.
"Can't everyone feel that?" She muttered to herself, but the Doctor heard her. She turned and walked away. It's true. Winter, since the day she's been born had been able to feel the Earth moving. She figured it was normal, but now she was not so sure. She sighed again for the hundredth time and walked inside. As she closed the door behind her a small 'ding' was heard from the computer. She at down and looked at the user who opened the website. She groaned. "Rose? Really?" Winter muttered. 'I should probably make sure she's okay' She thought. She looked up the address and groaned again. It was three miles away. Shed better start running. Winter opened the door to he apartment, grabbing a knife in the process. Better safe than sorry.
About forty five minutes later, Winter arrived at the street just in time to see a strange looking version of Mickey, Roses boyfriend, get back in his car. She sighed. He definitely wasn't normal. Winter stalked closer and saw that this Mickey looked plastic. Great, Rose's boyfriend was turned into an auton. Winter knew what she needed to do but hated it. She felt sick just thinking about it. She opened the car door silently and snuck into the back seat. Luckily the auton didn't register the movement. In fact auton Mickey didn't move at all until Rose came back in a huff. "All right, he's a nutter. Off his head. Complete online conspiracy freak. You win! What are we going to do tonight? I fancy a pizza." Rose said. Winter silently cursed. It was so obvious that he was plastic, how did Rose not notice. Plastic Mickey creaked and turned its head.
"Pizza. P-p-pizza" it said. Rose frowned.
"Or Chinese"
"Pizza!" The auton said in a haunting voice. It drove off, swerving violently.
Ten minutes later, Winter snuck out of the car, hyperventilating. Vehicles give her so much anxiety, but that driving made it ten times worse. She followed Rose inside silently, still clutching the knife. Mickey and Rose sat down and Winter saw the Doctor in the corner of the restaurant. Winter silently listened to Rose from another table.
"Do you think I should try the hospital? Suki said they had ajobs going in the canteen. Is that it then, dishing out chips. I could do A Levels. I don't know. It's all Jimmy Stone's fault. I only left school because of him. Look where he ended up. What do you think?"
"So, where did you meet this Doctor?"
"I'm sorry, wasn't I talking about me for a second?"
"Because I reckon it started back at the shop, am I right? Was he something to do with that?"
"No. "
"Come on. "
"Sort of"
"What was he doing there?"
"I'm not going on about it, Mickey. Really, I'm not, because, I know it sounds daft, but I don't think it's safe. I think he's dangerous"
"But you can trust me, sweetheart. Babe" his voice suddenly got deep. "sugar, babe, sugar. You can tell me anything. Tell me about the Doctor and what he's planning, and I can help you, Rose. Because that's all I really want to do, sweetheart, babe, babe, sugar, sweetheart" Winter started to stand up figuring Rose would realize now.
"What're you doing that for?" Winter sighed, and the Doctor came up behind them masquerading as a waiter.
"Your champagne" The Auton didn't look up. Winter stood up as well.
"We didn't order any champagne. Where's the Doctor?" The Doctor tried to get Rose,
"Madam, your champagne" . She was completely oblivious. Winter crept up behind Mickey.
"It's not ours. Mickey, what is it? What's wrong?" She said, put off.
"I need to find out how much you know, so where is he?" The Doctor tried to get Rose's attention again.
"Doesn't anybody want this champagne?"
"Look, we didn't order it" Mickey looked annoyed then looked up. He saw the Doctor and grinned, his hand forming an axe. The Doctor popped off the cork and it embedded into his skin. It just tell out again and the Auton stood up. Everyone began screaming. Rose pulled the fire alarm and Winter stabbed the Auton in the back. It was unfazed. The Doctor pulled off its head, but the auton continued following them.
"C'mom Rose, Winter" he said as he dashed out the door. Winter followed him with Rose not far behind. They ran through a rundown alley that ended with a closed gate. In the middle was a blue police box from the '60s. Winter stared at it. It was giving her strange vibes, vibes similar to the Doctor. She came to the conclusion that it was his ship when he stepped inside. Rose looked reluctant, but eventually stepped inside just to rush out again and walk around the box. The headless Mickey suddenly banged on a gate and that spurred Rose into action. She rushed inside followed closely by Winter who had broken out of her stupor. Winter ran inside and was immediately hit by the sheer amount of energy. Rose seemed to be asking questions, but Winter wasn't listening anymore, it was unimportant. A strange humming was all around the ship, but the strange bit was that it made sense to Winter.
"Ah, my timelord is back... and with two beings. A human and a..." The voice said. It was feminine.
"Hello?" Winter said, except it wasn't words that came out, but humming, identical to the one around her.
"Child? You can understand me?" The humming said. Winter looked around.
"Yes. Are you this ship?" Winter asked.
"very sharp young one. I am Sexy, the Tardis. at least that's what my timelord calls me" she said.
"So the Doctor is an alien. A timelord" Winter said, her hypothesis confirmed.
"Yes, but child you should answer him he seems concerned. We can converse later" Winter looked up and sure enough, the Doctor was asking her a question.
"Are you alright? Culture shock?" . Winter shook her head no. "Anyways. As I was saying, what do you think?" He asked, clearly waiting for something. Winter looked around, registering the large room. She's studied this theory in college, but it was labeled as science fiction.
"Layered dimensions" she breathed. The Doctor looked taken aback.
"Er... Yes. Anyhow, let's go" he said and slammed down a lever.
"Where are we going?" Winter hummed to the ship.
"We are going to the city, my timelord is searching for the transmitter and tracing that plastic head" Sexy hummed. Winter nodded to herself.
"What are you humming?" Rose asked. Great once again, Winter was the weird one.
"Nothing" she lied. The head and and strange noise and started to melt. "Doctor. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen" she said pointing to the head. The Doctor started cursing and slammed down more levers trying to trace the signal. Soon, Sexy stopped travelling and the Doctor walked to the doors, Winter following close behind. Rose protested, but gaped when the Doctor threw open the doors. Outside was a bustling street. Winter stepped outside and looked around. They were in central London.
"Did we just fly?" Rose asked. The Doctor shook his head no. Rose seemed to realize something. "On God! I'm going to have to tell his mother" she said. Winter figured she was talking about Mickey. The Doctor didn't catch on as quickly.
"Who's mother?" He asked. Rose looked furious.
"Mickey my boyfriend who got turned into plastic! You forgot about him, you really are an alien" she shouted.
"Well I'm sorry if I forgot about one kid while I'm trying to save all of you stupid apes" he shouted right back. Seeing the situation quickly escalating, Winter changed the subject before it got out of hand.
"What are you looking for?" She feined ignorance. The Doctor quickly forgot Rose and answered,
"A giant dish. It's got to be huge though, it must be invisible". While he was rambling Winter cleared her throat and pointed to the Ferris wheel behind him. "Fantastic". The Doctor started running off towards it and Winter and Rose followed behind him. They ran through the city, across as bridges and through streets. Eventually they came to the base of the wheel and the Doctor stopped. "It's going to be underground, so there must be some entrance" he said. Rose looked excited and pointed to the ground.
"Over here" she shouted, while pointing to a STORM drain.
"that'll be it" he said. He and Winter ran over to it and the Doctor pointed his 'screwdriver' at the drain. He popped it up and walked inside. Rose followed after him and Winter did as well. They climbed down the ladder into a multilevel chamber. In the middle was a giant blob creature. "The Nestene Consciousness. That's it, inside the vat. A living plastic creature". Rose looked at it in disgust and Winter in interest.
"well throw in your anti-plastic and let's go" she said. The Doctor frowned and Winter shook her head.
"I'm giving it a chance to leave first" he said harshly. Winter was about to agree when Rose looked around the chamber and suddenly saw her boyfriend.
"Mickey!" She squealed, rushing to him. The Doctor and Winter followed, both rolling their eyes. The Doctor walked towards the Nestene and spoke, Winter right behind him.
"I seek audience with the Nestene Consciousness under peaceful contract according to convention 15 of the Shadow Proclamation. " The blob flexes. A grumbling noise comes from it, but once again Winter can somehow understand it.
"Audience granted" it grumbled.
"Thank you. If I might have permission to approach?" The Doctor asked. Winter looked at Rose and Mickey, but it didn't seem like they could understand the blob.
"Permission granted" it said. The Doctor rushed down to the edge and Winter slowly followed.
"Am I addressing the Consciousness? Thank you. If I might observe, you infiltrated this civilisation by means of warp shunt technology. So, may I suggest, with the greatest respect, that you shunt off?" Winter rolled her eyes at the pun. A face forms in the plastic.
"It is our constitutional right to eat, it is only nature" the Nestene Consciousness explained.
"Oh, don't give me that. It's an invasion, plain and simple. Don't talk about constitutional rights." The Doctor said, but the Plastic mumbled something. "I am talking! This planet is just starting. These stupid little people have only just learnt how to walk, but they're capable of so much more. I'm asking you on their behalf. Please, just go." The Doctor tried to reason with it but two mannequins were approaching from behind.
"Doctor!" Rose shouted. The dummies took out the anti-plastic and Winter edged to the side.
"What is this then?" The plastic demanded.
"That was just insurance. I wasn't going to use it. I was not attacking you. I'm here to help. I'm not your enemy. I swear, I'm not." The Doctor tried to explain.
"What is this then?" It demanded again. The Doctor seemed confused.
"What do you mean?" He asked. A door opens and the Tardis slides out.
'Sexy!' Winter thinks, panicked. Their only escape has just been captured by this thing. She was beginning to get slightly angry, and she could tell the Doctor was too.
"Is this your weapon?" The consciousness demands. The Doctor shakes his head,
"No. Oh, no. Honestly, no"
"Your ship then?" It snarls.
"Yes, that's my ship" the Doctor seemed relieved.
"Time Lord!" It spat. "Your kind left us to die" it growled. The Doctor was panicked.
"That's not true. I should know, I was there. I fought in the war. It wasn't my fault. I couldn't save your world! I couldn't save any of them!" He seemed close to tears as he said this. Winter felt sympathetic for him. Rose was shouting, and it seemed that the plastic invasion was going into the final stage. Winter could see that Rose was calling her mother and the Doctor was shouting at them to run. "Get out of here! Go! Just go home!" He shouted at them. Both Winter and Rose. refused to let their planet be destroyed. While they were turned away Winter walked over to the plastic.
"Hello? Nestene Consciousness?" She asked hesitantly. Like before all she heard was grumbles, but she understood.
"What do you want human? Or are you another timelord?" It demanded. Winter shook her head.
"I know the Doctor wasn't planning to kill you is all" she began. "Actually he refused to kill you until he spoke to you, and now I'm afraid he thinks he has no choice. I'd rather nobody die today" she explained. It was true, Winter didn't enjoy death in the least bit. The Consciousness seemed unsure.
"How do I know you're not lying? And how can you understand me?" it asked suspiciously. Winter sighed.
"You dont, in all honesty I just wanted to give you a chance, and I don't really know how" she said. It bubbled violently.
"we need to eat, earthling. Just as you do" it roared. Winter whipped her head to the side just in time to see Rose swing down and knock the guards into the vat along with the anti-plastic. "Nooooo" it screamed in agony as it died out. It's screams filled the chamber, but it continued bubbling even after it died. Winter slumped. There goes something else dying around her. The plastic was bubbling violently now, threatening to explode, burning them all with molten plastic. Rose Mickey and the Doctor ran into the Tardis and Winter followed closely behind. They all were inside and The doors closed quickly. The Doctor slammed down a lever and the Tardis dematerialized leaving the vat of plastic behind.
They materialized in an alley above ground. Mickey ran out quickly sheltering behind a pallet. Rose walked over to him and stared at the Doctor. "Fat lot of good you were" she scolded. Winter rolled her eyes. Honestly, the Doctor probably did this everyday. The Doctor looked up at Rose sighing,
"Nestene Consciousness? Easy" he said, falsely arrogant. Winter could tell he was upset. Most likely about it dying. Rose looked upset now as well, like she was expecting praise.
"You were useless in there. You'd be dead if it wasn't for me" she said harshly. Winter just frowned. That wasn't exactly true. She had a feeling that the Doctor was in these situations often. Winter just stepped out of the Tardis and turned to look back at the Doctor. She couldn't take Rose anymore.
"It was just hungry Rose, It was just like you and me, looking for food. And then it felt threatened by the Doctor that's all, it was like an animal frightened by us" she said, hoping to get Rose to understand what she did. That was murder, murder of an innocent creature and Rose had just shrugged it off. It seemed that Rose still didn't understand.
"It was evil. It was going to kill us all. What are you to sympathize with it? Another alien?" She shouted. Winter flinched. She was completely normal, she just understood better than most. She felt utterly furious.
"You're the alien Rose Tyler. That was a living creature and now it's dead" she screamed. Winter didn't even notice the tears running down her cheeks. Rose flinched at that as well.
"Well it's better off dead" she growled, then she looked at the Doctor. "I did save you though" she snapped.
"Yes...Thanks. Y'know you two could... Come with me. This thing can go anywhere in the universe" he said, patting the Tardis. Rose looked hesitant. Winter pondered for a moment.
"I just got out of college and I need to look for a job... sorry" she said. Winter honestly was sorry. It seemed exciting to travel with the Doctor and She wanted to meet thenew species and peoples that inhabited the world.
