The next few days were Hell. John had always had an issue with publicity and the media, especially after what it had done to his husband's image during and after the fall. So for him to willingly walk through the media gauntlet, all for one man, Lestrade was impressed.
From the small interviews that were taken by local news crews, John appeared to be handling it well. As the doctor had predicted, Sherlock was barely present, stating they were married before vanishing off into the distance, or sitting beside John ignoring the questions. The ex-military man answered most of the questions, frowning at ones that were inappropriate, and answering the rude and demeaning ones harshly.
Lestrade was proud of his friends, clearly seeing the love and devotion John held for the detective in every one of his answers. Sherlock's love was more understated, and Lestrade might even have missed how he showed it.
One of the interviewers had said something rather problematic. A derogatory comment regarding the terms of John's medical discharge. In less than a second, Sherlock's entire body posture changed, as he started defending his husband while catastrophically embarrassing the interviewer with his observations while the rest of the crew watched on with horror.
This clip went viral, with many hashtags on twitter such as: #HusbandGoals, #TrueLove, and #Johnlock. #Johnlock trended that day, and it remained trending for a few days afterwards.
On John's official twitter account the pinned tweet was his wedding picture with the caption "It's elementary". His blog had a similar post, with more information about the wedding itself.
Lestrade was happy, even if it did not end up taking as much of the media attention off of the precinct as he had hoped, the public adored the couple.
They still didn't wear their rings on their hands, choosing to instead wear them on a chain around their necks, similar to John's military tags, they had not wanted to be constantly removing them or fitting gloves over them when they had to inspect bodies and crime scenes.
He slowly became used to the pair holding hands and showing a softer side at crime scenes, not too much PDA and definitely not close to what he had accidentally stumbled into before, but it made him smile, to see his friends being so unapologetically in love, especially after the hell they had been through together.
Lestrade smiled as he looked upon his well-earned winnings from the betting pool, yeah, he was glad his friends had that courage to get out of the closet.
