Well I'm very excited to be back and at it again. I'm hoping this chapter is a little longer with more detail. I'm honestly more excited for the next chapter. That's when the story picks up and I don't even think I'm ready for that. Here it is! Over the Rainbow Chapter 2!
Disclaimer: I do not own The Darkest Powers
I'm waiting...and I can barely breathe in this corset. I know a man made this no way a woman would curse other women to wear these dreaded things.
"Are you nervous, Your Highness?" said Rain his voice piercing through my thoughts.
"No not nervous but I'm a bit anxious." I said knowing I can't hide what I'm feeling.
"Rain let's not get the princess in a mindset she does not need to be in right now." Miss Lidia scolded as she kept glancing at the door.
"It's fine I know Rain was just looking out for me." I told Miss Lidia
A knock came at the door and it seemed like the atmosphere suddenly changed into something that had my heart racing.
"It's your father." Miss Lidia said in a hurry as she went to the door.
The door opened and I curtsied as Miss Lidia and the twins bowed as my father walked through the door.
"My princess how you grow more beautiful every day." My father says as he approaches me. I stare at him as I try to internally calm myself as my nerves have been all over the place.
"You may all leave I need to speak with my daughter before the guests arrive." My father said his voice had a hint of authority to it, I'm sure was directed at Miss Lidia. As to answer my own suspicion, Miss Lidia spoke up.
"Your Majesty, I do beg your pardon, but I just want to remind you that the time is getting close and-" Miss Lidia said but was cut off by my father.
"Now Lidia, I won't repeat myself." My father looked at her daring her to challenge his authority again.
"Of course, Your Majesty. Your Highness, good day." Miss Lidia all but ran out the room with the twins bowing and mumbling "good day" as they closed the door behind them. How I wish I could go with them.
"Chloe as you know this will be your first interaction with people especially from another country." My father said he seemed like he was going to continue but I had to ask.
"Who's the guest?" I said with deep anticipation.
I need to know my dreams were racing a mile a minute last night, after my father brought it up at dinner. Maybe the guest was family I've never met before. I'll get to meet my cousins for the first time. Maybe they were family from my mother side and they never wanted to see me because I looked so much like my mother. Maybe my dad is selling me off to some prince to expand our land. I just want this torture to end.
I mean I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter. I've been groomed to be obedient and a proper princess. I feel that I know more than most princesses my age because I've had the time to sit and study politics and I know how hard it is for a woman to be taken seriously. If my studies have taught me anything it's that I shouldn't be surprised to get married off. It's the politically correct thing to do. I can accept that. I'm ready for it.
My father put his head down and I felt like I was seeing him for the first time. My anxiety went through the roof. I was getting sold off. I was the right age and my father looks older than he's ever looked before. He doesn't want to sell his only daughter but what choice does he have? I thought I was ready but I'm not. I can't hear this.
"Father if it's what I think it is I won't do it without a fight." I said as my voice started to shake.
My father looked up confused with a smirk on his lips. "I know how your imagination likes to run wild. Sit down before you make yourself sick. I haven't even said anything yet." My father said with a bit of humor in his eyes.
"Just let me speak Chloe." I nodded my head and sat down, feeling silly all of a sudden.
"You do look so beautiful tonight. I see so much of your mother in you. Every day I look forward to waking up and seeing you. I've kept you from the world because I was afraid of what could happen to you. I've sheltered you and kept you safe from harm's way for so long." My father said as he took a deep breath. I looked at him knowing that's the reason why he's never let me out and I've never questioned it.
"When you were born, your mother didn't want anyone near you. No one really got to see you. Her family took a boat to come see you, but your mother wanted your identity to be a secret. I thought she was being over protective, but now I know it was something else." My father stood up and went to the window.
"I'm not sure if she wanted to keep you from her family or the world. She made sure you were safe and when she passed, I felt that it was my duty to continue to protect you as diligently as she did." My father took a second to take in the view of the ocean.
Suddenly, my father walked over to me and kneeled down to my eye level. He stared at me with an intensity I've never seen before.
"I did everything in my power to keep you safe. You must know that. I raised you to be strong and confident. I raised you to trust your instincts but to be cautious of the people around you. You're going to do great things and rule as queen someday." He stared at me like he was giving me a message.
I cupped his cheek in my hand and stared back at him with just as much intensity. I realized I wasn't nervous anymore. "Yes, father you have raised me to be confident and intelligent. I know wherever I go I will be great because you raised me to be great." I said as I kissed his cheek and stood up.
"Besides they're only guest which means if anything they should be afraid to see us not the other way around." I said looking at my father.
He blinked and stood up the intensity gone as if it was never there. My father looked as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
"Of course, my dear." My father said as he stood up and walked towards the door.
"Well I will leave you to finish getting prepared. I will see you down in the main hall." He walked over and gave me a hug that was a little longer than normal. I hugged him back not sure where this was coming from.
As he was about to leave, I called out to him. "Father you never said who the guest was." I said
"Oh yes I'm sorry I got caught up in my story. The guests are the Kingdom of Norwegian and from your studies you should know who resides there." My father said challenging me on my knowledge.
I looked at him knowing he wanted me to tell him. "Yes, the Kingdom of Norwegian resides North of England. Its rulers are King Marcel Davidoff and Queen Jacinda Davidoff. They have two princes and a princess. They are known to trade with many neighboring countries and is the most advanced kingdom when it comes to healing and medicine." I said with an even tone.
"Yes, that's exactly correct. It will be the King and his advisors coming tonight. Just make sure you're ready when the time comes." My father said as the intensity came back into his eyes.
I stood up and curtsied to my father. "Yes of course."
He opened the door and Miss Lidia and the twins came back in. They bowed as he walked pass them.
As the door closed, I allowed myself to breathe and noticed that they were looking at me worried.
"Well come on we don't have much time." I said as I stood and walked over to my vanity.
"Yes, Your Highness." they said as they hurried to get me ready for a night I'll never forget.
