I do not own Chronicles of Narnia or it's characters. I do not own the poem that inspired this piece. Poem excerpts have been removed from the story so I won't be flagged by trolls. Regardless, I hope you enjoy

Lucy POV

"Hey, Lu! Where are you going?"

I turned around to find Edmund entering the stables behind me. I should have expected him to be in there. It was his favorite place to be.

"I'm just going out for a ride," I said tending to my horse, Jazz.

"Do you mind if I go with you?" he asked already preparing his own horse, Philip.

"No, I don't mind." As soon as we were both ready we took off through the woods, I in the lead and Edmund following. It had been over a year since we first arrived in Narnia. I had decided early this morning that I wanted to take a trip out to the field where we had fought the White Witch's army a year ago. Before leaving, Aslan had turned it into a makeshift cemetery for the Narnians who had been killed during the battle.

The field looked so different now than it had a year ago. It no longer held the pain and clatter of war, but was instead peaceful. Crosses lined the field now, each one surrounded by the most beautiful flowers, whose scent would fill the air each time the wind blew. It was a sad but beautiful picture.

Each cross marked the place of a fallen Narnian, who had gone on to Aslan's country. How wonderful a place that must be I thought. A cry from overhead awoke me from my thoughts and I watched a griffon fly off into the distance.

I dismounted Jazz and Edmund followed suit. "Listen," he whispered. "It's like they are trying to speak to us."

"Ed," I said cautiously. "I don't hear anything; just the wind." Suddenly tears were rolling down my brother's face. I was startled. "Oh Edmund what's wrong?"

"This," he said gesturing to the field. "Is all my fault. These Narnians had lives, had families and I was selfish and took all of that away from them. None of this would have happened if I wouldn't have been so caught up in having power over you, Pete, and Susan."

"Ed, you can't blame yourself. Sure they had lives but not the lives they wanted. They weren't living in a free Narnia and that's what they were fighting for. And we have to keep fighting to keep Narnia a free land. That's our job as the kings and queens."

He looked at me. "I just wonder how things would have been if I wouldn't have gone to the White Witch. Would there have been so many deaths? Would Aslan have been here the entire time?"

I hugged him and at first he tensed but after a second he relaxed into it and hugged me back. "Edmund as king you're going to lead many more battles and death happens. You can't blame yourself every time a Narnian soldier falls. The battle still would have happened, and lives still would have been lost, it just wouldn't feel like such a heavy burden on you." He sighed audibly. "Just remember, every Narnian fighting is doing it willingly. They aren't forced now and they weren't forced then."

After a moment, once Edmund was better we remounted our horses and rode back to Cair Paravel. Narnia was now free and we were going to keep it that way. Those Narnians will not have died in vain.
