Welcome to my first TLS fic! I got this idea in my head and it just wouldn't leave me alone, so here i am.
In this story Rachel will still be a virologist studying different diseases, while i had to make Tom Chief of Police, to suit the story. Also, everyone's a little bit younger than in the tv show, most of them are in their early-mid 30s.
Okay let's start!
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon like another in Peak Highs for Chief of Police Thomas Chandler. He had just dropped off his two kids Ashley and Sam, at their little league football training and was driving around town, his windows rolled down, taking a longer route than usual, looking around for any sort of unusual activity. It wasn't his job anymore to surveil but, although he wouldn't admit it on any given day, he did miss his patrolling day sometimes.
Driving through the street of Honey Creeks, he noticed a big truck, the one used when moving, parked in the driveway of one of the houses on the road. He kew the house, had been good friends with the previous owner , and although in excellent conditions, it had been uninhabited for many years now. He slowed down trying to see if he could spot who the new proprietor was. He heard some male voices and recognised them as belonging to some of his friends and colleagues. His assumptions were proved right when he spotted his Lt. Danny Green and Deputy Police Tex Nolan carrying a bunch of boxes. Tom's brow furrowed wondering why the two men would be there, as he stopped the car altogether. He climbed off the vehicle and quickly closed the distance between him and the house. As he approached he heard a female voice speaking with a pronounced British accent. He almost stopped dead in his tracks, almost mesmerized by that voice. Almost. He got closer to the truck and he saw her just as she was entering the house, long brown hair flowing around like silk. She was wearing simple form-fitting jeans, beige t-shirt and a mustard jacket. She looked stunning.
Tex saw him first. He was standing in the middle of the driveway, seemingly entranced by the new owner of the house and he decided to act on it before she could classify his Chief as a creep, although the image of that would be very entertaining.
"Chief! How you doing?" he shouted at him, grabbing a box from the back of the truck. That did seem to work, as the other man snapped his head back to him and advanced towards his direction. "I happened to be around and saw you and Green here. Thought I'd have a look". Tex didn't seem too convinced by the answer, as Tom didn't have any close friends in the close vicinage, but decided he would let it slide. "So what is that you're doing here?"
"Green and I signed up with Patrick from town to help him some hours on the weekends after he mentioned that he had little personnel at the moment. Danny and I thought we would give him a hand, given his current economic situation" he finished saying, putting the box he was holding near some of the others. Tom could only nod, as he heard her voice again, this time giving orders to Green, inciting him to be careful with the package he was holding.
Her eyes met his and he was captured once again. Looking at them carefully, there was nothing too special in them, brown orbs with a splash of green however, he didn't think he had ever seen something more beautiful in his life. She had incredibly high cheekbones and full lips… and he realised he was openly staring at her. He moved towards her, who was standing just some feet away from the threshold of the house. "I take it you're the new resident. Tom Chandler. Pleasure to meet you" he told her, extending his arm. He felt all the hair in his body stand up when she shook his hand "Rachel Scott. Pleasure's all mine"
Rachel Scott. He loved the sound of it and wished he could test the way it rolled off his tongue, even though he already knew he would have a lot of possibilities to use it.
"Alright, it seems like the house is all set, for the exception of those few boxes in your bedroom… Chief" Danny appeared from inside the house, talking to Rachel, not having noticed him before. He wondered why he felt a twinge of jealousy at the thought of his Lieutenant in the room of this woman he had just met. The woman in question looked between the two confused "Chief?" she asked.
"This guy right here, sweetheart, is the Chief of Police of Peak Highs" Tex slapped his shoulder slightly "And one of the toughest we've ever had, dare I say" Danny added, raising his eyebrows at Rachel, who in response looked very entertained. "Chief of Police, huh? Interesting. And what about you two. What is it that you do?"
"Tex here is Police Captain and Danny is Lieutenant" Tom answered before they could.
She raised an eyebrow, clearly amused "Oh wow, do you treat all the new residents like this or am I just really lucky?"
"Honey this is nothing, wait until we throw a welcome ball for you" Tex winked at her and Tom couldn't help his blood boiling in his veins
"If you do, I will never talk to you again. I assure you" she looked genuinely embarrassed at the prospect of such formality and he couldn't help but grin at the sight of her blushing in front of him.
"So, what else can we do for you, milady?" again, Tex's words angered him and he just couldn't understand why.
"Actually, I think we're done here, guys. It's pretty late already and I'm pretty much all set, so you can just go home now really. You were truly amazing today and I wish I could have offered you something to eat or drink but I'm afraid I don't have anything"
"Well, maybe you could come to grab something to eat with us? Maybe we could introduce you to some of our friends?" Danny asked her and Tom was truly punching himself for not saying it before him. However Rachel shook her head "Sorry guys, I can't today. I already have plans for tonight"
"Alright then sweetheart, why don't I leave you my number and if you need anything you can call me?" She nodded at Tex's proposition and handed him her phone. While he was typing his phone number, Tom took a moment to look at her for the millionth time in the span of 20 minutes. His first observation of her had been correct, she was very pretty. He wasn't standing too close to her, but he was close enough to smell her vanilla-scented shampoo, which was driving him crazy. And, as the sun was lowering down, the light was playing on her hair, and if possible, she looked more beautiful than she had before.
Tex handed her the phone and the three men said their goodbyes to her.
As he was walking toward his car, he turned around to take one last glance at her and noticed that she was looking at him intently. He smiled at her and she smiled back, showing her perfect teeth and two oh so adorable and kissable dimples. He reached his car and shook his head, trying to get out of the trance effect she had had on him. As he looked at the time and realised he should start the engine to go pick up his kids from training, he realised she was still looking at him.
