It was a peaceful night on Berk. Not a Viking awake for they were all sound asleep in their warm beds. But for the dragons, Shadow, the Titan Wing Dramillion was wide awake. And so were some yaks. One yak was just standing around, chewing its cud, when all of a sudden…a cloud of dust erupted from underneath the poor beast and it was dragged down into the ground followed by some unlucky sheep! Cracks began to form on the ground, an ominous warning of terrifying events to come.
'Everybody has a past. Even dragons. And sometimes, the past can come back to haunt them…'
And at the Fiersome house, Shadow, Aurora's Titan Wing Dramillion and surrogate parent was alert and cooing in distress while he was curled around his healing friend, "Shadow.. go back to sleep..." Aurora cooed. Shadow cooed and nuzzled her but he was still alert to what was going on below them.
'And when it does, you learn just how far their willing to go to protect you from their past…'
The next morning, the Dragon Riders, Gobber, Stoick and the Fiersomes were surprised to find a rather large hole in the village. Mulch had come to the Great Hall during breakfast with a report of a missing Bucket and here they were, staring at the hole in the ground. Shadow sniffed the hole and snarled at it.
"Easy Shadow.. easy bud. It's just a hole..." Aurora said to Shadow soothingly. "A very big and deep hole to be exact." Zenna piped up, peering into the hole as well. Aurora was still healing from her last encounter with Krogen. She could now walk around but she was still a bit sore and tender.
"It's not just a hole! It's like an underground village!"
To everyone's surprise, Bucket suddenly came running up to them and waved!
"There's our missing Bucket!" Edgar, Zenna's father, laughed jokingly.
"You alright down there, Bucket?" Henna, Zenna's mother, called out.
Mulch was nonetheless happy to see his good friend all right. "Bucket! There you are. I've been lookin' for you all night!" he told Bucket who said happily, "Sorry, Mulch. But I think I finally found it: My happy place!"
"Your happy place is a hole in the…?" Zenna managed to say before the ground suddenly shook! And, without warning, Bucket was suddenly thrown out of the hole in a cloud of dust! Coughing, the little group rushed to their friend's aid.
"Are you alright, Bucket?" Stoick asked in concern.
"Not so happy anymore…" Bucket gulped.
"Getting thrown out of a hole kind of does that to you…" Zenna remarked, looking at the hole nervously.
"What happened?" Stoick asked Bucket. The poor farmer-fisherman was now scared out of his wits.
"Something pushed me out! Something's down there! Something big!" he exclaimed, his bucket rattling in fright.
That was when Shadow snarled and leaped down the hole. Shadow snarled and rushed down a tunnel in an aggressive manner. Just then, they all heard the most peculiar noise…almost like there was someone or something…whispering down underground.
"What is that sound?" Astrid asked in a low voice as they all huddled together in a defensive circle. "Eh, whatever it is, it's giving me the willies." Gobber muttered, readying his mace.
"You don't suppose it was that something big that pushed Bucket out of the hole?" Henna said, readying her sword along with her husband.
"I know that sound... WHISPERING DEATH!" Aurora screamed and just as she did the Whispering Death burst out of the ground! Unlike Aurora's Whispering Death friends, this one was sand brown and the bottom of its chin is faint purple in color and it bigger and armed with many more rows of larger, sharper teeth. It also had bigger eyes that did not show their pupils. It's eyes are encircled by a small white ring and it was covered with more dark blue spikes. The Whispering Death had a pair of purple wings with glossy blue edges.
"That's a lot bigger than a normal Whispering Death!" Snotlout exclaimed, wide-eyed.
"Do I have to?!" Fishlegs squeaked nervously.
Astrid quickly sprang into action. "Dragons, everyone!" she commanded. Save for Aurora, the other Dragon Riders mounted their dragons and took to the air to face off with the new, hostile arrival.
"Uh, I don't like the way it's eyeballing me." Snotlout said nervously, seeing the way the Whispering Death's milky white eyes staring at them all like they were its next victims.
"Uh, don't worry, it's not just you." Fishlegs said helpfully, scared out of his wits. "
Thanks, big relief!" Snotlout said sarcastically.
Then, quick as it came, the Whispering Death dove back into the ground! Landing their dragons, the Riders looked at each other tensely.
"What…was…that?" Astrid asked slowly. "Whatever it was, I want one!" Tuffnut said excitedly. Fishlegs meekly raised a hand.
"That Whispering Death was much bigger than Aurora's Whispering Deaths." Edgar said grimly.
"Then that must have been... a Titan Wing Whispering Death.." Henna chimed in.
"But I though that was what the Screaming Death was." Zenna stated confused.
"Nope, the Screaming Death is a subspecies of the Whispering Death." Aurora corrected.
Bucket was now fearfully standing on a barrel to avoid getting attacked again. "Where'd it go? Why's it here? What's it gonna do to us?! WHY AREN'T YOU SLAPPING ME TO SNAP ME OUT OF THIS?!" he yelled to Mulch, who was standing on another barrel.
"Because I'm scared too, Bucket." Mulch whimpered.
That's when the Whispering Death made another appearance! "Ah, it looks angry. Why don't the two of you do that thing where you two touch its nose and feed it grass?" Gobber suggested to Hiccup and Zenna. "You mean the Dragon Nip? I don't think we have enough…" Zenna replied, a little freaked out.
"So, how do we deal with this thing?" Snotlout asked, frantic.
"Let the adults handle this!" "You'll rue the day you try to dig holes into our island!" "Stand back, everyone!"
Everyone else then turned to see Stoick on Thornado, his Thunderdrum, along with Henna and Edgar, on their Hideous Zippleback, Serpent and Serpentine, arrive.
"Thornado's got something to say to this beast!" Stoick announced as Thornado let out an almighty sonic blast! "Give 'em what for, Serpent!" "You too, Serpentine!" Edgar and Henna shouted as their Zippleback gassed and sparked at the Whispering Death. But the fierce Titan Wing Boulder Class dragon was undeterred and roared!
"I don't think it's got its listening ears on." Gobber quipped.
"Alright, let's run this thing out of here!" Astrid instructed the Riders. But suddenly, just as the other dragons prepared to launch their attacks, the Titan Wing locked eyes with Aurora and roared before charging her! "WAAAHH!" Aurora screamed as she ran from the Titan Wing baddy. "Aurora!" Hiccup and Zenna gasped in horror.
"Hey, leave her alone!" Edgar and Henna yelled before Serpent and Serpentine blasted the Titan Wing with their Gas and Spark attack. The Titan Wing roared at them and blasted its rings of fire at them. "Dodge it!" they both exclaimed and their dragon flew out of the way.
The Titan Wing made another lunge at Aurora but this time Shadow came burst from the hole and tackled the large dragon. "Shadow!" Aurora exclaimed, seeing her Dramillion battle the Titan Wing Whispering Death. Shadow blasted it with a magnesium and plasma blast but the Titan Wing roared before lunging at Shadow. Shadow dodged it and bit it on its tail before slamming it on the ground.
"Odin's ghost!" Stoick gasped in awe, seeing Shadow's strength. Then the Titan Wing launched it spines at Shadow and he dodged it before he fired a lava blast at the Whispering Death, knocking it to the ground. "Shadow can't beat that Titan Wing alone!" Hiccup exclaimed in concern.
Stoick and the adults were now manning a catapult as the fight reached the plaza. "Gobber, you and Henna and Edgar man the catapults, and when that thing is clear of Shadow, fire!" the Chief ordered.
Shadow and the Whispering Death roared at each other before Shadow lunged at the Whispering Death once more. Shadow fired his magnesium blast at the Whispering Death, stunning it for a moment before Shadow bashed it. The Whispering Death roared and fired its spines at Shadow with one hitting him in the left leg! "Shadow, no!" Aurora cried, rushing over to her friend.
"Aurora, no!" Zenna called. Aurora came to Shadow's side just as the Whispering Death lunged at them but suddenly, two of the Sentinel dragons came in front of the Titan Wing Whispering Death! "The Sentinels!" Astrid gasped.
The two Sentinels unleashed a large blast of wind that blasted the Whispering Death back,
"Gobber! Henna! Edgar!" Stoick shouted, now seeing an opportunity to fire. Quickly, the two-limbed blacksmith and Zenna's parents fired a round at the Whispering Death. The Boulder Class dragon roared and then burrowed back underground.
Once they were all sure that the Whispering Death was gone, Zenna rushed over to the injured Shadow, "Oh Shadow.. you're hurt.." she cooed. Shadow calmed down and allowed Zenna to remove the spine from his leg. "Nothing serious about this wound. It just needs a little salve and some rest." Zenna quipped, spreading a special salve on the wound.
But no sooner had Shadow recieved his treatment, he bolted, going up to a large cliff and overlooked from it. "Shadow wait..!" Aurora called as she could only watch her Dramillion run off.
Hiccup and Zenna could only watch as their Night Furies ran off, confused and worried all at the same time. "Where're they going?" Astrid wondered out loud. "Shadow's probably running away to lick his wounds." Snotlout laughed, receiving a pretty hard bonk to the head from Zenna and her trusty battle sticks.
"It's not funny! Shadow could have been killed" Hiccup said to his cousin angrily.
"Um, does anyone want to talk about what in the name of Thor just happened?" Fishlegs asked meekly. Tuffnut shrugged. "Uh, dragon fight? Just another day on Berk." He replied, not really sure of his answer.
"Uh, not really. It seemed like there was way more to it than that." Fishlegs pointed out. "He's right. The Titan Wing Whispering Death singled Aurora out." Hiccup agreed.
"And Shadow defended her aggressively and wanted the dragon all to himself." Astrid added.
"Yeah he certainly did... but why would it single me out..?" Aurora wondered.
"Uh.. are we gonna be tested on this? Cause I am completely lost." Tuffnut stated.
"Well don't look at me." Ruffnut said to her brother.
Later that night, Aurora tended to her injured best friend. Shadow kept nudging her, checking for injuries. "I'm okay, Shadow, really.." Aurora reassured. Suddenly, Shadow growled as footsteps were heard!
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy, bud. It's just Zenna and her parents." Aurora said soothingly as Zenna, Henna and Edgar came into the room.
"How's our wounded warrior?" Edgar asked gently.
"He's still a little on edge." Aurora admitted. "And still checking me for any injuries..."
"Don't worry Shadow, that thing won't come back." Henna stated. "I think and the Sentinels gave our message clearly about uninvited guests on Berk."
Shadow cooed at Henna, "Now go on and get some rest.." Zenna added as she climbed into bed. Aurora and Shadow went to bed as well after the parents left.
Shadow opened his eyes and saw the others sleeping and he quietly flew out of the window and ran off into the night before he looked back, "Don't worry Aurora, I'll protect you from him again..." Shadow thought to himself before he ran off into the darkness.
The Next Morning...
Aurora and Zenna woke up, "S-Shadow..?" Aurora called only to see Shadow's bed, empty!
"Shadow!" Aurora called as she and Zenna ran outside.
"Aurora, Zenna, what's wrong?" Henna asked.
"Shadow's gone!" Aurora exclaimed in worry.
"Gone?!" the two parents gasped.
"H-He must have snuck out last night. H-He must have went after the Titan Wing alone.." Aurora fretted.
"Let's go and get Hiccup and the others and start searching." Edgar chimed in. Zenna and Henna agreed and they all went to get Hiccup and the others.
Soon all them gathered in the Academy. When Aurora told them that Shadow was missing, all of them except for Snotlout was worried. "So your Titan Wing went out to battle another Titan Wing, big deal." he scoffed.
"Snotlout, this is serious." Fishlegs said. "If Shadow's tail fin is injured by that Titan Wing Whispering Death, he won't be able to fly. He'll be a sitting duck."
"Plus, you know how special he is to Aurora." Astrid scolded.
"Yeah, yeah so." Snotlout added.
"Snotlout, Shadow raised my from a baby! He's bascially my DFBFF!" Aurora exclaimed before she seeing the confused looks on her friends facing making her face palm. "Dragon Father Best Friend Forever." she spelled out.
"Oh..!" the others stated.
"Before I met you guys and started rescuing dragons, Shadow was the only one I really accepted as a friend." Music started playing before Aurora broke into a song.
When I was just a baby, I found it rather silly
To see how many other dragons I could meet
I had no books to read, didn't know I that would ever meet
Anybody to make my life complete
But there was one male that I cared for
I knew he would be there for me
My dragon father, best friend forever!
Like two peas in a pod, we did everything together
He taught me how to hunt and stealth (Best friend forever!)
We never had a single fight (We did everything together!)
He kept me safe, he raised me so
I miss love him more than I realized
It seems
(Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, the twins and Zenna)
Your dragon father, best friend forever
Like two peas in a pod, you did everything together
(Aurora)
And though he's, oh, so far away
I hoped that he would stay
My dragon father best friend
Forever
Forever
Aurora shed a tear before wiping it away. Hiccup and the others could see just how strong and deep Shadow and Aurora's bond was. "So c-can we go now?" Aurora asked everyone.
They all nodded and Aurora mounted Stryka along with Zenna, "Don't worry, Aurora. We'll find him.." she reasured her as Stryka flew out of the Academy along with the other dragons.
The search went on for a while until they found their first clue: a series of gigantic holes!
"There, down below." Hiccup said, seeing the holes. The group landed and Aurora dismounted Stryka. "Shadow? Where you buddy? Shadow..!" Aurora called but her Dramillion didn't respond.
"How do we even know the Whispering Death made these holes?" Snotlout asked.
"So you think it might be the other 2,500 pound, rock eating dragon we're following?" Astrid asked him rhetorically.
"I know what you're- Don't try to confuse me." Snotlout grumbled, annoyed.
Then Hiccup spotted something on the ground. "He must've lost a tooth." He said, picking up the Titan Wings' tooth.
"Is it sharp? If it is, I want it! I like sharp!" Tuffnut said eagerly. "Yeah, sharp is good!" Ruffnut agreed with him.
Zenna and her parents rolled their eyes at the Twins.
"Think about this: hundreds of those spinning together, ripping through dirt and tree roots. Discarding rock like it's not even there!" Fishlegs exclaimed, slightly in awe. "Yeah, I'd rather not think about that, Fishlegs." Henna said flatly.
Suddenly all the other dragons began to nervously squawk and growl. "Stormfly, what's wrong?" Astrid asked her Nadder. "What's wrong with you?" Tuffnut asked Belch worriedly. "Barf, settle down!" Ruffnut yelped to her Zippleback head.
That's when Hiccup heard the whispers underground.
"Stop! Listen…" he alerted the teens.
"Listen for what?!" Tuffnut asked loudly.
"I don't hear anything. What are we listening for?!" Ruffnut yelled.
"Be quiet!" Astrid yelled at them, also hearing the weird sounds coming from underground.
"How are we supposed to hear anything over her yelling-?" Tuffnut managed to ask before Astrid went, "Shhh!" and Zenna gave him a glare that instantly shut him up.
"The whisper…" Fishlegs whispered fearfully. "Looks like we beat Shadow…" Snotlout gulped as the ground violently shook.
"Yeah…We win…" Astrid said nervously and with one loud explosion, the Titan Wing Whispering Death emerged with a roar.
"I'm not feeling like a winner!" Fishlegs squeaked.
The Titan Wing laid its eyes on Aurora and growled at her fiercely before it lunged at her. Aurora gave a weak flap of her wings, just enough to dodge the lunge but the Whispering Death wasn't finished. Serpent and Serpentine intervened and launched their Gas and Spark attack on their own. The Whispering Death screeched at roared at them before a red and blue blue crashed into it!
"Shadow!" Astrid gasped.
The Titan Wing Dramillion had the Whisper by the tail and threw him across the ground. Shadow roared at the dragon but to Aurora, Shadow said, "No one harms my daughter, you beast!"
The Whisper got up and roared, "Bring it..! I almost got her once and I'll get her again!"
Shadow growled, "Over my dead body!" and he lunged at the Whispering Death once more but the Whisper slapped him with his tail, sending him crashing to the ground. "Shadow, no!"
Toothless and Stryka blasted the Whisper with their plasma blasts, making it angry but giving Shadow a chance to blast with his lava blast. The Whispering Death screeched but it saw Hookfang and the other dragons intervening and decided to burrow underground.
Aurora came over to Shadow, "Shadow, are you alright..?" she asked frantically, looking over her friend.
Shadow cooed at her. "Shadow, please let me help you with this.." Aurora pleaded but her dragonion father turned away before he ran away, "Shadow, wait! Come back..!" Aurora called, chasing after him but Shadow fired a weak plasma blast at the ground, stopping her, "It's my fight, Aurora, not yours.." Shadow said to her before he ran off in search of the Whispering Death.
Aurora could only watch confused as to what was wrong with her friend. Nevertheless, the group flew off to find him again, "I-I just don't get it. Why is Shadow acting this way?" Zenna wondered.
"If only he could talk like Stryka..." Hiccup yearned.
"Umm.. acutally... he can talk... to me at least.." Aurora admitted.
"Huh?!" the group exclaimed.
"My Amulet... it gave me the power to talk to dragons.." Aurora stated.
"It did!" Fishlegs exclaimed, earning a nod from Aurora. "That's incredible.."
"What did Shadow say?" Astrid asked.
"He said... this is my fight, not mine. The Whisper said that he almost got me before and he'll get me again.." Aurora explained.
"Almost got you before?" Zenna echoed.
"You don't that means the dragon almost killed you before, do you?" Fishlegs questioned.
"If it does than that must be why Shadow's so aggressive towards him." Edgar stated.
"He must have tried to kill Aurora when she was a baby and now he's trying to do it again.." Henna added. "Shadow's acting this way to protect you from the Whispering Death."
"But Shadow can't win by himself." Fishlegs fretted.
"Pfft, please did you see him fight the last time." Snotlout scoffed. "He's got this..." Suddenly, a loud explsion was heard and seen in the distance, "There!" Zenna called and the group flew over to the scene and saw Shadow and Whispering Death fighting again. Shadow grabbed the Whispering Death by the tail and threw it into some trees and roared at it.
The Whispering Death roared and fired a fireball at Shadow but he flew into the air and fired the same fireball at the Whispering Death. The fireball struck and the Whispering roared in anger before Shadow tackled the dragon to the ground and pinned the dragon to the ground.
The Whispering Death gave a roar at Shadow but the Dramillion gave him a fierce roar that, to Aurora, meant, "Stay away from my daughter, understand...?"
The Whispering Death roared, "Alright.." before Shadow let him go and the Whispering Death burrowed back underground, hopefully never to be seen again.
"Odin's beard.." Edgar gasped.
"Shadow won.." Henna added. Aurora spread her wings and slowly flew down to Shadow and hugged him, "Shadow, oh, I was so worried..." she cooed. Shadow cooed at her and nuzzled her. "Please don't run off like that again..."
Shadow cooed and nodded before licking Aurora. Zenna and the others came over to the pair, "Come on you two, let's get back to Berk.." Zenna stated.
Aurora and Shadow nodded and Aurora mounted her Dramillion friend and the group flew back to Berk.
'When our past rears its ugly head, it usually doesn't have six rows of razor sharp teeth and a bad attitude. If it does, you'll get to see a side of your dragon that you've never seen before. I know that I would always protect Shadow and now I know that he will always protect me.. no matter what...'
