Episode 18: Fighting Demons
CHAPTER 1: THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM
27 years earlier…
Ace Memorial Hospital, Maternity Ward, 1:30 AM
Kathleen Gray was in labor. She and her husband, Grant, were about to have their first child together. Kathleen originally wanted to abort it, but Grant, always wanting to be a father, vetoed that decision. He persuaded her to keep the child and even told her that maybe she'll love it once it was born. Kathleen relented and kept the child to term. Now it was time for the delivery. Grant waited outside the delivery room with other men waiting to be fathers. Then one of the doctors came in.
"Mr. Gray?" he started.
"Yes?" said Grant.
"Your wife is out of delivery now," said the doctor. "Would you like to see your daughter now?"
"My daughter? I have a girl?" And a weepy Grant followed the doctor to the where the babies were. When they got there, one of the nurses picked up a girl with short black hair.
"Your wife wanted to wait until you came to see her to name the baby," said the doctor.
"She's beautiful," cried Grant. "Where's my wife?"
"She's resting," the doctor replied. "You want to see her?"
And they went to where Kathleen was. She was laying on her side. She turned around to see Grant near her. She sighed.
"Well, she's here," she said, flatly. "What do you want to name her?"
"Well I wanted to name her after my grandmother," said Grant. "How does 'Violet' sound?"
A few years later…
Violet was walking around the neighborhood. She had just left Patty's house and was heading home. She had walked past the Brown's home and saw Charlie Brown and his father playing with Snoopy. They looked like they were having a good time. Then Maureen, Charlie's mother, came out and greeted them. She was seven months pregnant and was expecting their second child. Violet hoped this child wouldn't be a loser like their brother was. But what Violet saw was the family closeness they had. And Charlie Brown wasn't looking depressed as he usually did. He was comfortable with his family and they showered him with love. Violet yearned for that closeness. That was one of the reasons she hated Charlie Brown. Despite being a loser, he had a good family life, otherwise. Something even she didn't have. Her father did love her and showered her with affection when he was around, but he was busy with his business and it was growing. She was proud of her father, but still wanted that closeness the Browns had. Her mother was less affectionate. She couldn't be bothered with Violet for the most part and was almost always intoxicated.
"I hate that Charlie Brown!" she angrily said to herself. "He's stupid, clumsy, and ugly! And yet, his family loves him and is there for him. Why can't I have that kind of life. It's probably the only good thing about him!" And she kept walking back home, steaming mad. Charlie Brown always brought out the worst in her.
