The coffee was warm in her hand is she gripped it for dear life. Caffeine was the only thing keeping her eyes open. Ray had been up most of the night studying the new case laid on her desk yesterday. Normally she had weeks to prepare before a deposition, but she was put on the case last minute. She's only been a lawyer for a few years, but had quickly risen in the ranks at the firm Organa, Skywalker, and Solo, or OSS for short. She made junior partner after year one and had spent most of her time working on their higher priority cases. Since three lawyers that had founded the firm were wanting to shorten their time and focus on their families. The reason she had been thrown onto this case so quickly was the death of one of the original partners. There was some speculation over how and why, but Han's death was tied to the case they worked. They were busy fighting and oil company was believed to be dumping residue into national parks. Han gone missing two weeks previously on a scouting mission through one of the most recent parts. They found him a few days ago having fallen off a cliff. She knew this was going to be a rough day. They were going head to head against the largest farm in the nation. Her firm was known to take cases that dealt more along the lines of saving the planet, and anti-large business. As such they only had a few employees, but they were known to hire the best that money couldn't buy. Rumor had it they had a lawyer on the defendant's case was tied to the solos in some way. Rey was busy riffling through papers making sure she had them in order when the door to the chambers opened.
It was not a large room. Mainly due to the fact the table meant for them was almost as long and wide as the room itself. It held 14 seats. 6 For prosecutors, 6 for defendants, the judge and a stenographer. Rey glanced over the glasses perched on her nose to see a humongous man stride into the room. He was terrifying and gorgeous in all the right ways. Thick black locks were greased back from his forehead showing slightly larger than normal ears, but revealing dangerously deep coal eyes. Rey's eyes quickly darted down his slender but built body wondering what could be hidden under that all black suit. As she admired him her boss Mr. Skywalker stood and offered his hand to the first lawyer.
"Mr. Ren, pleasure to see you again."
His thin lips tightened into a sneer as he reached forward taking Luke's hand. The men shook hands but it was clear they were not friendly. Rey put down her papers and stood to receive the defendant's lawyers as Luke had. Mr. Ren seemed to fill the room as he moved to let the others in. She was dressed plainly in a blue ruffled shirt and black pencil skirt. Rey never liked dressing ostensibly as she had come from nothing. When she wasn't at work, she mostly dressed in jeans and tea shirts. Reaching out her hand to Mr. Ren she introduced herself.
"Rey Johnson, Junior Partner. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Mr. Ren took her hand begrudgingly as he took in her appearance. It must not have been to his liking as he dropped her hand quickly. His face giving off a displeased look.
"Kylo Ren, Senior Partner of Maul, Palpatine, and Vader. I was under the impression Mr. Solo was the lead on this case. Where is he."
His words were sharp but not as painful as the memory of the officers coming to their work. Did he really not know or was he trying to rattle them. It had been all over the news the last few days. "Lead Lawyer in Oil Dumping Case Found Dead at Bottom of Ravin. Death Deemed Suspicious by Law Enforcement."
Rey opened her mouth to speak but found nothing came out. Luckily Luke jumped in.
"Have you not heard?"
"I have been out of the country on business. I flew in for this meeting. What did he and Leia get into another fight? He decided to put this new girl here instead of facing me?"
"Han was found dead two days ago. In the very forest we are fighting for."
Rey saw nothing on his face but a flash of pain swept across his eyes.
"Well that is unfortunate. For both Mrs. Organa as well as your case. Shall we begin?"
Rey was taken aback at how unfeeling this man was. Clearly there was some history behind him and the founders. They were cold to each other but there seemed to be a story, and even if she didn't like the person, she would have something nice to say if they had died. As they took their seats the Judge and his stenographer came into the room to start their meeting.
"Can you believe it?! 5 Million. They tried to settle for 5 million!"
Rey was sitting in a booth at their local bar venting to her best friend and work colleague Poe Dameron. They had started around the same time at the firm. Poe knew Han from some older cases he had used in his studies. Luckily, he did not care to much for the corporate latter and loved the fact she got promoted. She had worried about it for days when Luke approached her.
"We knew they would be unreasonable."
"Well ya! But 5 million! For dumping oil into a national forest. It's going to cost 20 times that in clean up fees as well as the years it will take to fix."
"I don't know if..."
But he stopped short as her glare pierced through his skin. Reaching forward he placed a calming hand over hers.
"Look love. We knew this would be a fight. And it is going to be hard without Han, but we need to do it FOR him."
Tears filled her eyes as she thought about the caring man who had taken her in as family. When she had been hired the only thing she had in her life was Poe. He had been her rock all through school. They had met at Freshman orientation while his parents unload their van. Rey had stepped off the bus with only a suitcase and a backpack. As she took the last step, she tripped spilling ass over tits onto the hard pavement. Poe had rushed over and gathered her up and never put her back down. They bonded quickly and after finding out about her parentless past he promised to be the brother she never had. After a few weeks at OSS Han had dug enough into her that she finally told him about her unknown family, and he immediately took her in. She had joined them in multiple family dinners as well as gone on a few vacations outside of work. It was a wonder family she had set up, but now...she wasn't sure where she stood. Leia had always had a soft spot for her, but Rey knew she was hurting. They had not seen her since the news but Luke promised she was alright.
Weeks passed as Luke and Rey buckled down into the case. The funeral was lovely and heartbreaking all at the same time. During the eulogy Rey could have sworn she saw Kylo, but after a double take realized it was only a shadow. They had just finished one of the hardest openings to a case she had ever witnessed. It was going to be tough going up against MPV. They were ruthless. After much pestering Poe had convinced her to go out and dance. He claimed she needed it and for once she couldn't disagree. Drinking and dancing may be the only way to unwind after this morning's court.
"damn girl! Don't you look fine!"
Poe catcalled at her as she stepped onto her stoop to lock the door. She was in one of the nicer dresses she owned. As according to Poe jeans and a tea shirt were unacceptable. Hair falling around her bare shoulders and she adjusted the strapless knee length dress. It was a deep purple and hugged her curves in all the right places. Or wrong places if you were to ask Poe. She flicked him a finger as her heels clicked along the pavement leading to his BMW. He was drawn to the flashier things in life. Rey owned a simple Honda Civic, though she was working on an older hot rod in her spare time. That's was only for her eyes though.
The club music was loud as they pulled up to the valet. A young man offered her his hand to help her up to which she gratefully took. Poe threw his keys to the attendant and taking her by the arm. There was a long line, but he knew way too many people in this industry to wait. The velvet rope lifted to allow them inside much to the others protest. Once the door opened Rey lost all ability to hear anything but the pounding in her ear. Poe's grip loosened and slipped down to grasp her hand leading her towards another velvet rope. This one she could only assume lead to the VIP area where he frequented. Poe had come from a long line of money and lawyers so he knew most everyone in the city even if he did not work at a high-end firm. It was much less crowed in the VIP lounge than on the dance floor just outside the line. She felt his breath quicker than she heard him.
"Drink?!"
Poe yelled close to her ear. She nodded allowing him to slip away. He always knew what to get her. This wasn't her favorite kind of music, but the beat was intoxicating. A shot girl slipped by with a tray as Rey grabbed two. VIP shot service was free but she slipped her a $20 anyways. They only came by about once an hour so it's not like you could get drunk. The liquid burned her throat as she downed it needing to feel the sweet release from today. As she went to take the second one Poe slipped it from her fingers dropping a rocks glass in its place. Clinking it against her glass he followed her previous lead and was quickly grimacing. Free liquor is not always the best.
They both downed their drinks quickly and Poe went to fetch more as she began to swag to the beat. Soon she would be down in the pile of bodies grinding on the dance floor. As she turned to glance at the bar, she noticed a darkened face that quickly sullied her mood.
"What?! WHY ARE YOU GRIMACING?!"
Poe yelled over the music. She gestured towards Kylo Ren sitting at the bar.
"That's him!"
"Who?! That fucking gorgeous man at the bar? Who is he?!"
"That's the lead on the defense."
Poe almost spit his drink in her face.
"You didn't tell me he was hot!"
"WHAT DOES THAT MATTER?!"
She yelled just as the music dropped allowing everyone in her vicinity to hear. It also drew the attention of the man she came here to forget. His icy stare over took her as he glared. Obviously, her presence wasn't something he wanted either.
Rolling her eyes Rey downed her drink one last time and even downed Poe's disgustingly sweet martini. Waving off Poe's protest she left the VIP lounge to join the bodies on the dance floor. Slipping into the crowd she let the music take her and began to dance. Poe quickly joined her with another drink as the moved their bodies against one another. Obviously, it was much easier with Poe than with other men. Since her pressed against him would lead nowhere, and tonight was meant to clear her mind. Slowly but surely the drinks began to sink in and her head began to cloud. Hands found her waist leading her into another dance to which she quickly followed. Poe always lead them around trying to find the next hot thing on the floor. It never really bothered her, but as she was pressed against his body his hands began to roam. She knew he had experimented before, but found no purchase in the female form, so why is he feeling her up. As she turned to say something, she realized it wasn't Poe's hands caressing her. A greasy frat looking boy was smirking down and pressing her ass against his groin. She tried to pull his hands free but his mouth found her ear.
"Where are you going sweetheart. I only just got here. And you boyfriend left with his own boyfriend." Following his eyes, she saw Poe was tangled in the arms of a man down by the bar. He was very distracted with a tongue down his throat. She felt his firm grip move up her body to her neck as the clouding in her head got worse. Turning her face towards him he licked the side of her earlobe making her grimace. Fighting him again did nothing as he picked her up slightly so her feet found no purchase as began to move them off the floor. She tried yelling, but nothing could be heard over the music. The man set her down and spun her to him quickly as to hide her face from the other patrons. Pushing against him did nothing more than causing him to tighten his grip on her waist. Even with her mind fuzzy she could feel the danger as she was walked backwards away from people to what she could only imagine was a dark corner. A sharp pain was sent through her arm as someone ripped her from the man's grip. Her back pressed against a wall as someone stood between them. Some one very tall with very broad shoulders. She felt the vibrations as her attacker tried to push against him with no success. Rey watched as her savior balled up his fists in a threat causing the attacker to retreat.
Peeking around him she watched the guy stumble off as she flicked him the finger. Her savior turned to her and as she began to mouth "thank you" she finally made it up to his eyes. Dark hair fell across his forehead as he looked down at her from the deep coal eyes she had seen from across the table. Man did she want to run her fingers through that hair. She had never need it un-gelled before. It was tantalizing. Her mouth suddenly dry as she felt his muscles rippling under the palm she had placed on his chest when he turned around. She watched as his eyes darkened when her tongue darted out to lick her lips. With a hand on one side of her head against the wall he leaned in to say something in her ear.
"You really should be more careful when you are drinking"
His gruff voice nearly made her weak in the knees, and with her muggy brain she couldn't stop the muffled gasp that slipped from her lips. As if he could not control himself their bodies were pressed together her hand still on his very quickly beating chest. She felt his breath hitch as his chest pressed against hers slightly.
"I don't think there are many men who could control themselves with you dressed like that."
Fingers gripped his shirt as his lips danced dangerously close to the skin of her neck. His breath caused goosebumps along her skin as she automatically turned her head to given him better access. They stopped just short of her shoulder as he quickly pulled away.
"You are drunk. Go find your friend. Go home."
She tried to protest but he was gone. Storming across the room, pushing through bodies, and out the door. Rey watched him leave not moving from her spot. All she could think about was his lips dancing across her skin. Poe quickly found her still leaning against the wall with a slack jawed look on her face. There was a lanky man draped around him pressed to his back. He tried to get her attention, but she just waved him off. Mouthing she was going home for the night. He tried to stop her, but she quickly ran off. As she hailed the taxi out front, she could have sworn she saw him standing there across the street, but it had to have been her imagination.
As the month leading up to the next court date came and went, she was in a fog. She could not get Kylo out of her mind. Most nights she woke up in a hot sweat still with the feeling of him touching her, and it did not get any better when she saw him again. She couldn't get her mind straight as they walked into the court room. After about 20 minutes of trying to get the picture of him taking her on the stand out of her head she recused herself. The judge granted them a quick recess as she darted from the room. Rey caught the smirk on his face as she passed and while it filled her with anger it also made it so much worse. She found herself in an abandoned hallway of the courthouse fanning her very warm face when she heard footsteps behind her.
"I would think a junior partner would be over court room jitters by this point."
She spun to find Kylo leaning against the wall not far from where she stood.
"I'm just not feeling well if you must know!" She snapped at him. That smirk still firmly in place.
"You know...when I saw you at the bar, I couldn't believe that you were the same girl. You are much calmer inside the court room."
Her face flushed as he started to walk towards her.
"But you dress much nicer outside."
He started to reach towards her collar but she slapped his hand away.
"I will have you know that I dress very appropriately."
He let out a deep chuckle to which Rey had to fight the urge to swoon. She wasn't drunk anymore. She could not let him sway her like that.
"Appropriate would not come to mind when I think about that dress."
She grimaced at him trying not to let his barbs affect her.
"My dress has nothing to do with you. I can dress however I want. And while at work for OSS I prefer to dress professionally."
"How is OSS doing. I can't imagine my father's death has been easy on them."
"Your fath..."
Rey was in shock. This was Ben?! The young sweet Ben that Leia and Han talked so lovely about. She never really knew what had happened after he left. They never talked about him after the age of 18.
"but..."
"I changed my name. I could not exactly live my own life as a Solo could I."
He was still smirking but she could she the anger and pain in his eyes.
"How..."
"How did I come to work for MPV? Easy really. I'm good at being bad."
He leaned in closer to her as subconsciously her tongue darted over her lips again.
"You know..you are a shark in the court room. I'm sure that a junior slot could open up like that if you wanted it."
Rey was entranced until the snap of his finger. Is he seriously trying to shark her? Shark her to the rival company. The company that is defending scum who may or may not have had his father killed. His face was close to hers. Too close. Pushing on his chest she finally got her spine back.
"Seriously! You are trying to shark me from your family firm. You really don't know me do you. I guess there really hasn't been time. Let me introduce myself again. Rey Johnson, Junior partner of defending those who need a defense against slimy good for nothing law firms who care more about their pocket books than the companies they serve. Do you realize the investigation into your father's death is leading them down some dark paths? They know it's connected to this case and they are pretty sure it was either YOUR firm or the company who hired you who did it. Also, I could never work with someone who would try and use their sexual appeal to mess with someone. So good day Mr. Ren."
Leaving a surprised, angry, and flabbergasted Kylo behind; Rey stormed off back to court room to finish their proceedings. He joined them just as the judge called the session back to order. A scowl graced his lips as Rey quickly avoided looking at him. Returning to the prosecution of a corrupt company.
