Preface:
What if things had been different? What if just one thing had happened to change the fate of the Galaxy? In his office on Coruscant, Chancellor Sheev Palpatine—the secret Darth Sidious—was in the midst of plotting when everything stopped. They stopped for him at least; Chancellor Palpatine had a heart attack on the day Onderon achieved its liberty. Citizens of the Republic mourned their leader's death, Count Dooku panicked, and the Kaminoans scrambled to cover their tracks by shutting down the Order 66 protocols.
In the course of one missed heartbeat the entirety of the Sith Grand Plan came tumbling down. Dooku had never been fully privy to Palpatine's plan for the Jedi, so he knew to little to use the strategy himself. Tarkin and the other conspirators lost their unchallenged authority without the old Chancellor's favor. Bail Organa emerged as the Senate's consensus choice to take office as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. The new government remained committed to victory in the Clone Wars, but avoided the militaristic radicalism that Palpatine's inner circle had demonstrated.
Five years after the Sith Lord's death, Count Dooku perished in lightsaber combat with Jedi Master Anakin Skywalker and his former student, Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano. At the same time as this showdown Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu managed to terminate General Grievous. The Separatists suddenly had no competent military leaders with enough political clout to hold the united front together. Most of the systems that could returned to the Republic while the holdouts were rapidly conquered by a task-force under Masters Anakin Skywalker and Plo Koon.
Now universally hailed as the "Hero of the Republic"—Anakin Skywalker revealed his relationship with Senator Padme Amidala and his two young children. In a former time the Jedi Council may have condemned the young Master for his breach of tradition, but they could hardly expel the popular hero from the Order or disrespect the children of a prominent Senator. It was agreed that, with respect to the peculiar circumstance, Luke Skywalker would be raised in the Jedi Temple until Ahsoka was ready to take him as an apprentice. Leia would remain with her mother and be raised in the political dynasty of Padme's Naboo family. On a less grand scale, Ezra Bridger was recruited as a Jedi Initiate less than a year after his birth and taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Meanwhile Caleb Dume was able to finish his training with Master Depa Billaba and achieve the rank of Jedi Knight.
