Now past the gate of the Courtyard, Roxas and Naminé saw what had defeated the Beast. It was a bulky Heartless made of wood and underneath was a set of various wheels. It's width was essentially the size of the bridge. It's front had a gaping opening, with three archer Soldiers riding on top. The three looked at one another deciding whether or not to attack. This Heartless was classified as the Infernal Engine.
"Roxas, is it normally that… huge?"
"No clue, some Heartless take different shapes I guess." Roxas attempted to summon his Keyblade. "Damn it!"
"What's wrong?" she observed the Infernal Engine carefully.
"I still can't summon the Keyblade. Guess my best bet is magic…"
"You need magic, I'm your girl!" she gave a confident grin, "Here, grab my hand. I'll show you what I mean! I know we had our differences earlier but right now we need to prioritize."
"Offering the Heartless a handshake isn't fighting." he tried to keep frowning. I know I'm not too happy with her, but I can't seem to… stay angry at her. What is this emotion? Is this emotion? Nobodies can't feel anything... I need to focus.
Xion finally caught up. Roxas' face immediately brightened. Naminé's previous grin faded and retracted her hand. Xion saw the Infernal Engine. Back to Roxas.
"Wow that's a problem," she eyed it. "Roxas are you ready?"
"Yeah," he turned to Naminé, "Naminé, get to safety— away from all the fighting. Xion and I will handle things from here, it's what we— " he talked to the hand. His expression practically spelled 'what are you doing?'.
"Just grab my hand."
"Roxas, we need to take down the Heartless, come on!" Xion grabbed his hand.
"Aww have a heart Xion, he has two hands." the yellow haired lass took the other hand. "I'm just making sure he's has the resources to get the job done."
"Who. Are. You?" Xion glared. She internally gritted her teeth.
"My name is Naminé, but right now we need to focus fighting that Heartless!"
"Roxas let her go, she's a liability."
"Transform." Roxas groaned. "I'll improvise."
"I… alright, fine."
Roxas squeezed each hand; Xion on the right, Naminé on the left.
Xion focused her mind on the image of the Keyblade. Every inch was protected in light while her body transformed. Her mind was a weapon and so was her body. After the successful transformation, she opened her eyes as saw Roxas holding her hand, and on his other was Naminé.
"Roxas tell the girl to get the safety, you can't fight a Heartless with a handicap of holding some girl's hand."
Roxas turned to Naminé, about to give her the plan. That plan being her sent to safety. Before any word could be spoken, the blonde squeezed Roxas' hand.
"What are you—"
*PSHH*
In a flash of light, Naminé channeled her own magic, surrounded in light for a fraction of a time. When that fraction was over, a new form had taken over Naminé— a Keyblade! A bright white Keyblade with angel wings near the handle. At the end of the shaft had the blade intertwined into a heart. The keychain was a yellow fruit in the shape of a star.
Roxas gasped.
"!" Xion couldn't help but gawk at Naminé's new form. Of all times now she felt a little self-conscious. Her Keyblade form felt dull in comparison.
"I call this form, Oathkeeper!" Naminé beamed with pride in Oathkeeper form. The warmth of the hilt reached his hands even through the gloves. It seemed as if she gave him strength. He lifted her with ease.
"Y-your Keyblade is beautiful. You're light too!" Roxas stammered, "Can you do any magic?"
"Just the standard ones. Though, I'd say it's my specialty. Brute strength isn't my forte Rox'." she grinned, "Whenever your ready that is."
"I-I can do magic too." Xion reminded him, "Bet I'm stronger too." Rox? I never gave Roxas a nickname… just who IS she?
"I'll be counting on you." Roxas grinned, " I think we've kept this Heartless waiting long enough."
"Agreed. Great minds think alike don't you think?~"
"..." Xion pouted in Keyblade form.
Now with two Keyblades in hand, Roxas spun both and charged towards the Infernal Engine. The Heartless sent out several crates which had Soldiers popping out left and right. They enwreathed the Duel Wielder in seconds. Roxas had slashed each one in seconds. His relentless assault was like a tornado destroying anything in its' path.
"Wow Roxas you're moving a lot faster than usual!" Xion said. "And a lot stronger too!"
"Maybe he's trying to impress a certain someone." Naminé suggested.
"I just feel… stronger than usual, that's all." he humbled himself, "It's like I'm getting stronger rather than weaker with two Keyblades."
"You should fight like that more often."
"Maybe if I could use two weapons more often."
"Happy to oblige~."
Roxas shifted gears and targeted the Engine while dodging the array of arrows send down by the Archer Soldiers. The Infernal Engine backed all the way to the other side of the Bridge, it's open mouth now closed. Roxas stood in the middle of the Bridge, panting.
"I *huff* used a bit more energy than I thought."
"Roxas use me!" Naminé said.
"What?!" Roxas and Xion spoke in unison.
"Aim me at the wheels when it gets close. I'll freeze the wheels and it should stop the mobility."
"And if it doesn't?"
"We'll improvise."
Roxas took a defensive stance, the Keyblade in the front, the Oathkeeper aimed to the side. The Infernal Engine powered itself full gear and went straight towards Roxas. Roxas readied himself for the frontal hit. The Infernal Engine gave a powerful roar and drove full force towards the Dual-Wielding Nobody. The ground shook as the heartless got closer.
"Now!"
A storm of ice came from the Oathkeeper. The ice hit the entire ground as well. A pillar ice found itself in the path of the heartless and broke. Roxas took the hit and crashed against the castle gates, the wood pushed back upon the heavy impact. Within seconds he got back up, with the Oathkeeper as a stand.
"Magic is your specialty huh." Xion repeated.
"I-I thought it'd work. I'm sorry.." Naminé apologized, "I thought the ice would stop the Heartless."
"Any other ideas? If ice won't work, how about fire?"
"Fire?"
"Yeah! Like a big one too! It's made of wood, and the tires look a bit worn down by the ice. It's skidding right now."
The Infernal Engine was spinning its wheels loudly, roaring engine to escape the ice. If not careful, it could crash out the Bridge. Roxas was now standing, his posture low, and deciding where to strike.
"So the plan's to use fire? Let's give it all we got." He stood pointing the Keyblade at the Heartless, "If Xion's fire doesn't get it done, maybe Naminé's will. You said it's your specialty, now's the time to prove it."
Xion concentrated all of her magic into the palm of her hand. The fireball inflated at the tip of the Keyblade's end. Roxas aimed it at the Infernal Engine.
"Firaga!" Xion shouted.
It went past the ice on the ground, melting it, and made a direct hit on the front. The large creature didn't falter, and with the floor no longer an icy prison, it drove top speed at the Dual Wielder, water skidding past.
"Plan B it is."
He aimed the Oathkeeper this time, the mobile behemoth getting closer by the second. Naminé focused every bit of magic she stored up into the index finger, aiming it carefully with one eye closed. Roxas saw the fireball concentrated at the tip. No bigger than his head, and smaller than Xion's last magic attack. In a single breathe, she released it.
"Megaflare!" Naminé roared.
The small fireball after shot, with the crack of Roxas's arm feeling the recoil. The once small fireball became the size of the Infernal Engine at least and incinerated it into smithereens as well as bits of the floor and wall around the bridge leaving a smoldering rocks and wooden crates burnt to ashes. Magic really is her specialty.
The Infernal Engine was defeated as it's giant pink heart ascended to the skies. It left a trail of shimmering dust on top of the pile of ashes everywhere.
Both girls reverted to their original forms while Roxas gritted his teeth in pain, his arm broken and the pain so intense, his mind failed to describe or focus on anything in particular. They had no potions left since they used it while searching throughout the castle earlier that mission. All three were exhausted from the fight.
"That's one problem dealt with." Xion said.
Patting the dirt off herself, Xion quickly noticed her partner's condition. Roxas was standing up while his free arm had wrapped up the other one into a makeshift cloth. He was one arm down. He tried to not show much pain.
"Wait, Roxas are you okay? What happened?"
"When Naminé launched the attack, the kickback was stronger than I thought. Don't worry I'll be prepared next time." He held up his good arm, "This one works fine."
"We're out of potions and used all our magic too…" Xion frowned.
The ravennette turned to the blonde known as Naminé.
"Who are you, really? You're able to transform into a Keyblade like me."
"Just a Nobody." She said, her focus on Roxas once more. "Roxas, that offer is still up for grabs."
"My decision doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, does it?"
"Your cooperation would certainly help."
Xion transformed her fist into the end of the Keyblade..
"Answers. Now." She glared. Xion began to glow a faint glow of white surrounded her. Roxas also began to glow but fainter than she was.
"-UGH!" Roxas fainted, his knees buckled and unable to endure the unexpected pain.
Both girls turned their attention to him. Xion was shocked and horrified while Naminé was frowning and calm.
"You caused this. You're why Roxas is hurting. Soon it'll be too late." Naminé summoned a portal of darkness, putting her hood back on. "I'd take Roxas with me, but I'm all out of magic and my group's retreated already. Next time, Roxas will be mine. He'll be where he belongs."
"I won't let you have Roxas." Xion readied herself for another fight.
Naminé vanished into her corridor of darkness.
Xion, now left alone with her thoughts and a unconscious Roxas she realized the fighting on the other side of the Castle Gate come to a close as well. She carefully set Roxas against the side of the bridge, and stacked the broken rubble to hide him from plain sight. Smacking her cheeks and took a breath of fresh air. She finally wore the hoodie over her head. It's time to see what happened.
She went through the Castle Gate and prepared herself for the worse.
…
*Courtyard*
"..."
Xion stared at the exhausted Saix and the fallen Crona. The pink hair swordsman was sleeping peacefully, and not even Ragnarok was out to disturb him. All four of them were covered in scrapes, bruises, and potential scars all over, even with the Organization coats to provide protection.
"Forget you saw anything today. I'm willing to ignore the lack of report for today. Including Demyx. Wherever he went. Give him that message when you see him." the wounded Berserker ordered. "The Witch Order has betrayed us. We have no further use of them."
He had a mix between a frown and a smile. He noticed Xion was still present.
"Wherever Roxas is, is no concern of mine. Go grab the Witch-Spawn and head back to HQ."
Despite the wounds, Saïx stood back up and made his own portal and returned to HQ. Xion shortly got Crona and found Roxas where she hid him. Before departure she heard a brown-haired woman approach the fallen beast. She hid as the Organization instructed her when the world inhabitants were nearby.
"Ngnn… Bella, run… back to the Castle. You.. mustn't get hurt." He barely murmured. "T-the creatures are stronger than I thought.."
"No! Those creatures are gone! You need to head back, I'm treating those wounds." She said with fierce determination. "If you get hurt, who'll protect the others? We need you alive. I want you alive!"
The two bickered while she assisted beast into the castle.
"..." Xion watched from a distance before taking Roxas and Crona into the Darkness to head back home. What's going on?
