The Awkward Phase
While their father prattled about a bunch of old film that Mad Dog had shot years ago and saying that a lot of happy memories were coming back to him, his daughters mostly tuned him out in favor of the more recent family video of Daria's third birthday party.
"I wonder why I never went through an awkward phase." Quinn said, continuing to goad Daria, maintaining the proud Morgendorffer tradition of sibling warfare.
Daria however glanced at her and gave a half-smirk that reeked of trouble, "You did have an awkward phase Quinn."
For Quinn Morgendorffer, time seemed to stop and reality began to break down.
"Whhhhaaat?!"
Daria pointed at the wall behind them, "I have photographic proof."
Shaking in horror, Quinn slowly turned to where Daria's finger of doom was pointing at, hanging on the wall were two framed photos of the pair in their tween years, the Daria picture Quinn barely saw, but the other... Oh the other photo.
It was of her, Quinn Morgendorffer, with her beautiful red hair, but her face was much too thin, her limbs were all awkward and gangly, and that DRESS!
"Uh Quinnie," her father said in concern, his memory-daze broken, "I think you burst a blood vessel in your eye, it's gone all pink and-GHHHAAAAHHHH!"
The residence at 1111 Glen Oaks Lane was being consumed by flames, the entire Lawndale Fire Department was on scene and had long since given up trying to save the property, instead trying to contain the raging inferno so it wouldn't threaten the houses nearby.
The only survivor stood quietly, ignoring the police officer trying to ask her questions while a medic was looking her over.
The only thing Quinn would say that day was the following.
"I never had an awkward phase."
