Jarrod

The heat from the torch makes the skin of Katherine's thigh redden and bubble as if it's about to melt from her femur. He's burning her. It only takes a millisecond for me to decide. I toss back the vial and feel the liquid trickle down my throat. A crushing blow hits the pit of my stomach, causing me to fall to my knees and dry heave with tortured gasps.

I manage to look up and watch as Rhauk throws the torch to the ground and busily unties her from the crucifix. As her binds loosen, she tries to throw punches and kicks in his direction. The gag falls from her mouth.

"He has done what you have asked," She bellows, "Now let me-"

He snaps his fingers and she suddenly lies limp in his arms with closed eyes. She's been knocked out by magic. He throws her easily over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, his feet swallowing the ground in long strides towards me.

He stares down at me as if I'm some puny spider he's about to smash. I struggle to stand, to get up and fight him even though I'm terrified inside.

"Don't bother trying to save her. You've lost much more than you realize," He laughs maniacally and vanishes in a cloud of smoke.

He has disappeared with the woman I once loved long ago. Even though I don't remember our love story, I remember the look in her eyes before she passed out under his spell. She was fighting for someone she truly loved, someone she tried to protect. She was fighting for me.

Kate

It happens in my room. As I gloss over spells in various dusty books strewn about my bedroom floor, my thigh burns in an excruciating pain. It's as if I stood too close to a campfire and one of the flames has fried my fragile skin. I look down and to my horror, my skin begins to redden and crackle revealing muscle tissue. A sharp scream of agony flies from my soul as I can almost see the bone of my leg.

"Jillian!" I manage to cry out between screams, struggling to stand.

Footsteps pound up the stairs.

"What's wrong, Kate?!" She shouts as she runs into my room.

"My, my leg…" I gasp, gesturing to wound.

"Oh, my heavens!" She cries coming closer.

As quickly as it came, the pain evaporates into nothingness. Our jaws drop in utter shock and disbelief as we watch the wound close, heal. All of the redness disappears without the slightest trace of a scar.

We're both quiet for a few minutes, barely breathing. We can't believe our eyes.

"You, you saw it… didn't you?" I whisper as I touch the spot where the wound should be.

Her silence causes me to look up. She's still staring at my leg, fear clouding her eyes, and with her mouth twisted in confusion.

Finally, she speaks.

"We're in trouble, Kate."
