Wow thank you so much guys! Did not expect that many people to still read Rizzoli and Isles fanfiction, hope you enjoy this chapter!
"After I got back I had a letter from the academy saying that I had being accepted. The letter had come through three weeks prior to me opening it, I only had one week to prepare myself. Tommy was going into grade ten and Frankie into grade 12, Ma was losing her mind having the sudden realisation that her kids were growing up and one of us was moving out to start their career. I had no time to think about anything Maur, I had to pack, make sure I was prepared, ma also received the divorce letters from pop. Even after I left the only time I had on my phone was spent talking to Ma and the boys and making sure they were all ok, I wanted to message you, I was going too. I just ran out of time and next think I know its six months later and as much as I hate to admit it, I forgot Maura. I'm sorry, I'm an idiot I know, and I shouldn't have forgotten about you." Jane sighed looking at the blonde with hope in her eyes that she would understand and forgive her.
"I texted you Jane, not straight away but I did text you, a few times actually…" Maura trailed off feeling upset at the brunette's excuse for not getting in contact with her.
"I know…I..I have no excuse for that, the academy was strict, I could only use my phone from five pm until eleven, I was busy studying with most of that when I wasn't talking to Ma. I saw your messages Maura, I just never had the time to text back"
"People make time for others that they care about and love, and want to talk to Jane!" Maura was getting angry by this point and wasn't sure how much she could take. Standing up she headed over to the fridge and poured herself another glass of wine.
"Did you meet anyone?" Maura asked turning to face Jane. "Did you find love again?" It was a question Maura wasn't sure if she even wanted the answer too.
"Kinda, yeah" Jane looked down at her beer feeling awkward. "I dated a few times, had a couple of short relationships and one serious one after I left the academy. Her name was Regina, she remined me of you a bit actually, smart, sassy, could stick up for herself. But she also reminded me of myself, hated to be wrong, very strong personality. We loved each other but after a year and a half together we decided to just be friends. She is now settled down and got married just last year to a girl name Emma, she's lovely and they're very happy together" Jane smiled thinking about her past.
"Sounds cute" Maura said bluntly feeling slightly hurt.
"What about you?" Jane asked biting her bottom lip.
"I didn't date in med school, I did afterwards but mainly focused on my career. I did have a couple of relationships, longest one lasted a year." Maura paused "And now, I have a boyfriend, we have been together for just over two months"
Jane froze, she didn't know what to say or how to feel about the blonde's news.
"A boyfriend? Really but I thought.."
"What that I was gay? Just because I've only ever dated girls, please Jane, it's not like you were the one who helped me realise. Our relationship is going very well and I'm very happy with it, I don't want anything ruining that" Maura stared at Jane with tears in her eyes.
"Right, gotcha." Jane stood up and headed towards to door. "Ill see you at work tomorrow I guess"
Jane headed to her car, sliding into the drivers seat she rested her hands on the steering wheel and began to cry. Had she really lost her childhood sweetheart, the first girl she ever loved? She was heartbroken at Maura's news but also knew she didn't have any right to be.
The next day Jane headed into work with bags under her eyes and a coffee in her hand. Heading to her desk she turned to Korsak.
"I didn't know Maura had a boyfriend"
"What? What are you on about Jane?" Korsak asked confused, removing his glasses to look up at the brunette
"Maura, she has a boyfriend, she told me last night. She said they've being going out for two months and it's going very well and she doesn't want anything ruining it, I.E me!"
"Jane, Maura hasn't got a boyfriend. When she started here doing her shadow shifts four weeks ago we all went for drinks and she talked about how she had a date with a woman called Bette the week after. When we asked how it went she said she wasn't sure if she was going to see her again or not"
"Why would she lie to me"
"Maybe she didn't want getting hurt again" Frankie said walking up behind his sister
"Yes thankyou Frankie, what the hell are you doing up here anyway, I thought you were out patrolling"
"I am, I'm on a break and thought I'd pop up to see my favourite sister" Frankie answered with a wide smile on his face
"I'm your only sister you jerk"
"Maybe try talking to her again, ask her why" Korsak said before returning to his work
A couple of hours later Jane headed down to the morgue on her break. Knocking on the door, Jane stepped into Maura's office.
"What are you doing here" Maura asked looking up from her lunch.
"Well hello to you too. I thought we could have lunch together…and talk"
Maura placed her sandwich down and clasped her hands together.
"Why did you lie to me"
"Excuse me"
"You know what I'm on about Maura, you don't have a boyfriend"
"Korsak"
"Yes Korsak Maura, he told me. Why lie? What's the point?" Jane was confused and wanted answers and she wanted them now.
"I don't want to get hurt again Jane. When I saw you stood there the other day, my heart ached. I didn't think I was going to see you again and yet there you stood, eight years later, we are both working at the same place. I was heartbroken when you said you didn't know me, do you know how little I felt?"
"I'm sorry Maura. I panicked. But I wasn't expecting too see you either! I mean why would I, you lived in LA."
"I know, I completed all my training there. I was an ME for four years there. I moved to Maine. I saw an opportunity come up here and went for it, and luckily got the job. I never thought that I would see you Jane or even be working with you. It had been so long I didn't even remember that you were wanting to become a cop. Let alone be a detective by now"
"Wow, good life so far then. I didn't mean to upset you at the crime scene in front of everyone. That was wrong, and I hate myself for it. Maura it's being so long since we have spoke or anything. We're both different people now"
"Exactly Jane we are both different. I look at you and I feel everything all over again, but I can't go there Jane. Who's to say we would even get along anymore, who's to say I would even feel anything genuine like love for you again. It's to complicated Jane. We are work colleagues and nothing else"
Jane sighed, she couldn't believe was she was hearing.
"Seriously Maura? You don't even want to try to be friends? You don't think this is hard for me too? You were the first person I ever loved. The first person I had true feelings for. And what you just want to be colleagues? If one of us didn't work here we wouldn't have even met again. Can't you at least be grateful for that Maur?" Jane stood up pacing the room, she was getting angry and didn't know what to do with herself.
"Look Jane, I have no problem with us working together, I'm happy to get along whilst we are here"
"But nothing else right? I'm done" Jane waved her hand in the air before leaving the office and heading back upstairs.
A few weeks had passed since Jane and Maura's last conversation. They hadn't really spoke much unless it was to do with cases. Tonight was the annual homicide squad ball, ME's included. Jane knew Maura was going to be there not been able to pass up an opportunity to dress up. Jane stood staring at her wardrobe undecided on what to wear. Sighing she pulled out her best white shirt, trousers and a fitted jacket to go with. Heading into the bathroom she stepped into the shower and let the hot water run down her back.
Maura laid her dress on the bed with her shoes on the floor ready for tonight, taking a seat at her dresser she was unsure whether Jane would be attending tonight or not. She knew Jane liked parties, but would she attend a work one when it wasn't compulsory.
A few hours later the room filled with the homicide squad and the few higher up officers in attendance. Jane made her way over to Frost with a beer in her hand.
"Well this is quite the turn out" Frost pointed out turning to his best friend
"Yeah…haven't seen Maura yet"
"Are you going to talk to her? You've been down ever since you last spoke, you need to sort it out properly Jane"
"I know frost! I thought it would be easier than this, but the more I work with her and spend time with her at work. As strictly work related it is. I feel close to her again, I think I might be falling for her again Frost. I can't she's said how she feels, what if I just push away again?"
"You won't know until you tell her, I've seen the way you two look at each other. You both try to act like there's nothing there but even Korsak has picked up on it, there's something there Jane, sort it out"
"I guess you're right" Jane took a chuck of her beer before scouting Maura out across the room near the entrance. "I think I'm going to talk to her, tonight"
Before jane could say or do anything else and explosion came from outside, suddenly the smoke filled the room from the open doors. Jane froze, looking in the direction of where she last saw Maura she could now not see anything but smoke, and people running. Blocking everything else she ran as fast as she could in the direction of the blonde.
What felt like forever Jane eventually found Maura laying on the ground, bending down she grabbed hold of her.
"Maura! Maura!" Jane screamed. "Maura please!"
Slowly opening her eyes Maura looked up at the brunette.
"What happened"
"We've got to get you out of here, come one" Helping the blonde up Jane led her out the back door.
"We need to get you to the hospital" Jane hurried, heading towards her car.
"Jane no, you're needed here"
"I'm not leaving you Maura, not again"
Maura looked up at Jane before giving in and allowing the help.
