A couple of hours at the hospital had passed and Maura was given the all clear to go home.
"Let's get you out of here" Jane announced standing up from where she was sat beside Maura.
"No" Maura answered a little too quickly
"What? You were given the all clear, just a few minor cuts and bruises"
"No, I mean…You go Jane, my mother is on her way to pick me up"
"Your mother?" Jane questioned looking confused. "I thought she lived in London now"
"She does, I mean my biological mother, Hope"
"You found your mom? Maura's that's great news!"
"I know, thankyou for bringing me Jane and staying but you can go now, go do your job"
"My job includes looking after you Maura, I want to be here"
"Jane, go. You've done enough, please. It's time for you to go"
Feeling defeated Jane headed out the room muttering a quick goodbye.
Half an hour later Jane pulled up at the scene, spotting Frost and Korsak she headed over to them.
"Any news" Jane asked pulling her gloves on.
"Sorta, the car is registered to a Ray Murphey"
"Wait, the Ray Murphey, as in Paddy Doyle's enemy?"
"Yeah, seems he was the guy wearing the bomb"
Jane turned to him to look confused.
"Wait so a suicide vest? But why, why here anyway. Was it definitely him in the car?"
"We're not sure yet, I'll look into it"
A couple of days had passed since the accident and Maura was yet to return to work. Jane, Frost and Korsak discovered it was Ray Murphey in the car that night, and now they had another homicide, this time Ray Murphey's son.
"So Ray kills himself, an two days later is son shows up dead…with an ice pick though his chest. This has got Paddy Doyle written all over it. Surely his dad was after trying to hurt someone Paddy cares about, but who?" Jane took a seat at her desk.
"Not sure, the only child he had died a couple of years ago. He has no ex wives on record or any other children. Somehow Murphey found out what Paddy is so protective over." Frost answered
"Yeah, now we have to find out before anyone else gets hurt. Speaking of people getting hurt, how much longer do we have to put up with Pike, I swear I could strangle that man."
Frost and korsak laughed.
"He's here until Maura get's back" Korsak simply said
"Right, which could be forever so long as I'm still working here"
"Wait, I thought you two sorted things out" Frost questioned
"Yeah I thought so too, she kicked me out the hospital and hasn't spoken to me since, seems saving her life wasn't enough to make amends"
A couple more days passed and Maura was finally back at work. They were still unable to find Paddy Doyle, he had disappeared just like he does every time. Maura looked up from her desk to see Jane walking into her office.
"Hey"
"Hey"
"So er, how are you feeling" Jane stood awkwardly near the Dr's desk.
"Better, thankyou."
"Good"
"Did you find out who did it" Maura asked calmly.
"Yeah, Ray Murphey, one of Paddy Doyle's enemies, seems he was after someone Paddy cared about"
"Oh, right" Maura frowned looking away from the detective.
"What? What's wrong, your face is doing that thing"
"What thing" Maura replied standing up and straightening her dress before heading into the morgue.
"That thing your face does when you know something"
"I don't know anything Jane" Maura suddenly snapped, spinning around to face the brunette.
"Right, sure. Whatever you say Maur" Jane replied before heading back up to the precinct.
It was nearly home time and Jane was getting ready to leave.
"Hey Jane, we're all heading to the dirty robber afterwards, you joining?" Frost asked standing from his desk, throwing his jacket on.
"Yeah sure, why not, could do with a couple of drinks after this week."
An hour later they were all sat in a booth drinking and eating fries. The door swung open and Jane looked up to see Maura walking towards them.
"Hi, didn't know you were coming" Jane said sliding over for Maura to take a seat, but she declined and sat opposite her instead.
"Ditto" Maura simply replied.
"Me and Korsak.."
"Hey don't get me involved in this" The older detective quickly said cutting Frost off.
"I..thought it would be a good idea for you two to talk, we are all here so no awkwardness" Frost smiled turning to look at his best friend.
"Right yeah, brilliant idea Frost" Jane smirked taking a swig of her beer.
The gang sat talking for the next couple of hours, Jane and Maura had managed to have a normal conversation that didn't involve work or arguing. Placing his glass down Korsak stood up.
"Well I'm off, it's getting late"
Jane laughed looking up at her colleague. "It ten o'clock"
"Yeah, for an old guy like me that's late" He said before leaving.
"I might head off too actually"
"Oh Frost c'mon"
"G'night Jane"
Within seconds it was just the two girls together by themselves in the booth.
"Looks like it's just us" Maura perked up smiling softly
"Yeah, I guess so. You don't have to stay Maura, you can leave too if you don't feel comfortable staying with me"
"Don't be silly Jane, I want to stay. It's being a good night and we have actually spoken to each other like normal people"
"So, you don't hate me anymore"
"I still hate you, just a little less" Maura smiled
"Good , I'm glad"
Another hour passed before they both decided to call it a night. Standing up Jane followed Maura to the door.
"I'll walk you home" Jane said coming to a stop next to the blonde.
"You don't have to Jane, I'll just call a cab"
"No don't be silly, it's only a fifteen-minute walk"
"And then from mine to yours it's twenty five"
"Maura I'll be fine, please just let me walk you home"
"Fine, if you insist"
In sync the girls set off in the direction of the Dr's house.
They soon arrived, stood on her doorstep Maura unlocked the door before stepping in and turning around to look at Jane.
"Are you sure you don't want me to call you a cab Jane, it's late"
Maura I'll be fine honestly, I'll see you tomorrow yeah?"
"Sure, oh and Jane."
Stopping in her tracks Jane turned around to face Maura
"Yeah?"
"Thankyou, for tonight. I enjoyed myself, I think we will eventually be friends" Maura smiled closing the door. Turning around Jane half smiled, just friends she thought to herself, she wanted more but if that's all she could get from Maura she would take it in a heartbeat.
Ten minutes had passed and Jane was starting to feel on edge, like she was being followed. Suddenly a black van pulled up along side her, before she had time to think she was grabbed and thrown into the back of the car.
What felt like forever the car finally stopped, looking up the back doors swung open. Jane didn't know what to do or say, stood in front of her was Paddy Doyle.
"What the hell do you want" Jane asked angered
"Don't worry I'm not going to hurt you, I just want to talk" He said leading Jane out of the back and into the warehouse.
"Talk about what? The guy you killed or Murphey, who did he try to hurt that you care about so much" Jane had no patience at this point.
"My daughter"
"what?" Jane asked confused.
"He tried to kill my daughter, so I got my men to kill his son. No-one hurts my family, you know that Jane."
"I know your M.O, we searched, you don't have any other family Paddy"
"Not on record no"
"So, who is she? Who's your daughter"
"You're a detective you work It out, all I'm saying is when you do, take care of her Jane otherwise me and you are going to fall out"
"We've already fallen out, your wanted for several counts of murder, and now for kidnapping a cop"
"Yeah well, by the time you leave and get your message to your team, I'll be gone so don't bother"
Paddy let Jane go without another word and she headed home.
Two day's had passed and Jane hadn't spoken to anyone about what had happened that night. She couldn't think of how to even start working out who his daughter was, especially without telling anyone about it. Taking a deep breath she decided it was best to tell Frost and Korsak. Pulling them into the side room she sighed.
"I need to tell you two something, no-one else knows ok?" Waiting for the two to nod she carried on explaining what happened two days prior.
"Did he give you any other information, her age, where she lives or anything like that?" Korsak asked perching on the edge of the table.
"No, nothing"
"Could we still get hold of Colin Doyle's DNA results from the autopsy a couple of years ago?" Frost asked
"Frost that's a brilliant idea"
"We could Jane, but you will have to tell Cavanaugh about it otherwise there's no way." Korsak stated.
"Alright fine, you tell him and I'll try and pull up anything I can find on him"
An hour later Cavanaugh headed over to Jane's desk with a file in his hand.
"Here Rizzoli, don't let it out of your sight"
"I won't sir, I promise. Thankyou."
Jane placed the file on her desk thinking for a second.
"If Murphey was after his daughter, why was he at the ball. It would have to be someone that works here, we have everyone's files on record. If someone was related to him surely it would pop up" Jane furrowed her eyebrows.
"Not necessarily Jane. It's not bound to pop up, especially if the surnames are different or the birth wasn't on record."
"Right, so what do we do first, run every single female's DNA that was there that night through the system?" Jane asked
"You could, but we would need Maura's help for that"
"Leave it with me" Jane said standing up and heading downstairs.
Arriving at the blonde's office she opened the door and stepped in.
"Hey Maur, I have a favour to ask"
"What is it?" Maura asked looking intrigued.
"We have a bit of a lead on a case, but we need DNA testing for it, from an old case a few years ago."
"You think it may be connected?" Maura asked standing up and heading through the morgue and into the lab.
"Maybe, something like that yeah"
"Ok, well what do you need?"
"The department has everyone's DNA on record, I need you to run this DNA through the system and see if you can find a match"
"No problem, who is it, it just say's John Doe"
"Yeah, Cavanaugh said it had to stay confidential"
"Ok, I'll let you know when the results come in"
"Thankyou Maura, I owe you one"
A few hours passed before she received a call from the DR, telling her not to open the results till she gets there she headed back down to the morgue.
"What you got" Jane asked stepping into Maura's office.
Maura opened the email and immediately regretted it. Stepping back Maura tried to cover up her expression. She had known for a while who she was related to, if she had any idea Jane was trying to find out who it was exactly related to Colin and Paddy she would have refused. She didn't need the name of the person for who's DNA was being tested, a soon as she saw the results she knew who's it was.
"Maur…what's this. Why does it say you're a match" Jane looked at the blonde hoping she was as shocked as she was, but she wasn't. She just looked at the brunette with sorrow in her eyes.
"Maura, did you know you were Paddy Doyle's daughter?" The blonde didn't answer.
"Maura did you know!" Jane shouted at the top of her voice
"Yes" Maura quietly answered.
"Why the hell didn't you say anything?" Jane was angered, she didn't know if it was from a friend's point of view that she was angry she didn't tell her or from a detective's point of view.
"I'm sorry Jane, I tried not to think too much of it, I didn't think it would matter. Then you told me Murphey was after someone Paddy cared about I figured it was me"
"But still chose to remain silent"
"I'm sorry Jane, I wanted to tell you I did"
"How long have you known" Jane asked turning to full face the Dr.
"Just over a year"
"Jesus Maura"
"I'm sorry ok"
"Wait, this is why he kidnapped me on the way back from yours the other night"
"He did what?" Maura asked in shock
"He asked me to take care of his daughter but wouldn't tell me who it was he told me to figure it out for myself. I now wish I hadn't"
"Jane this doesn't change anything" Maura tried pleading with her but nothing was working.
"It changes everything Maura. Someone else could come after you, and Paddy made It my job to take care of you. If I don't then I don't even want to imagine what is going to happen."
Jane tuned on her heal heading up to share the news with Cavanaugh.
A few minutes passed before Jane walked out of his office hanging her head.
"Jane, what's wrong" Frost asked standing from his desk.
"He is placing me on leave, well, he wants me to work from home. Same for Maura, just till this at least dies down a bit"
"That sucks Jane, I'm sorry" Frost rubbed his friends shoulder.
Maura had being told the news before Jane had the chance to head down and talk to her, herself.
"I'm sorry Maura, I didn't think it would come to this" Jane apologized taking a seat whilst Maura packed up her laptop and other things she would need to work from home with.
"Don't worry about it Jane, it's not your fault"
A few hours later Jane pulled up at Maura's house with a bag full of clothes. Taking a deep breath she knocked on the door. A few seconds later the blonde opened up.
"What are you doing here Jane" Maura asked sighing.
"Look I know you probably want some space or something, but Maur I promised Paddy I would look after you so that's what I'm here to do. I hate seeing you in danger Maura. I know we have our differences and I broke you heart and all this crap but I still care about you, I want you to be safe."
A small smile appeared on Maura's face before stepping to one side. "You can come in"
"Thankyou"
"I didn't mean for you to get involved Jane, Paddy shouldn't have done what he did"
"Don't worry about it Maura it wasn't your fault. Besides I want to be here, I know you're not quite there yet for us to be besties or whatever, but whilst we have the time, I'd at least like us to try. If that's ok with you" Jane nervously sat at the island waiting for an answer.
"I think I can do that Jane. Thankyou" Maura answered walking past the brunette and placing a hand on her shoulder.
That was the first time Maura had touched Jane intentionally. Jane smiled looking at the blonde, she guessed things were starting to look up.
Hope you enjoyed this on guys! Thankyou for the reviews really appreciate them!
