Carrie was frustrated and it showed.
But she wasn't frustrated with work. Everything was fine on that end. Sure, it could be stressful at times but that wasn't the reason.
The reason was a six-foot, blue eyed blond that had her frustrated. He was hot one moment and cold the next that it was frustrating. One moment he'd be on her like white on rice but as soon as things were getting good. He'd back off and she wouldn't see or hear from him for a few days. Only for the cycle to repeat.
Carrie didn't know what to think or do anymore and right now was one of those days where he was acting cold. Like he'd dropped off the grid but she knew that wasn't the case since he came to see Abel. Every time she managed to catch him while he was visiting, either she became busy with another patient or he was on his way out. Leaving no room for her to get him to talk to her.
"Jax just arrived to visit Abel." Mackenzie informed while exchanging patient charts. Stopping her as stood to catch him. "But I would give him a few. He was talking to Dr. Knowles when I passed by."
Carrie sighed before shaking her head. "I'm going to head over there. It's time for Abel's next dosage of medication anyways. Hopefully he'll finally talk to me."
"You know with the way he's acting I would have said that he just wanted in your pants," Mackenzie paused shaking her head. "But that would have meant that he actually went through the act. And from what you've told me that hasn't happened. Since he pulls the brakes as soon as it gets close to it."
"I don't know what's going on but I'm going to get answers."
"Hey."
Carrie looked up at the greeting as she cleaned up. "Hey." She bit her lower lip as she watched him look at his. "You got a minute?"
Jax looked up at her before nodding. "What's up? Is something wrong with him?"
"No. He's doing great. Getting stronger everyday." Carrie said calming his worry. "This is more about us. What's going on? Better yet is something wrong?"
Jax sighed knowing that eventually this would come up. "No. Nothings wrong. You're great this is on me."
"This is the it's not you, it's me break up speech," Carrie shook her head before sighing. "Great, but you know there's one thing wrong with it? I don't even think we were together because you never asked and we didn't label whatever this was. So save your speech it's not necessary." She shook her head before making her way towards the door.
Jax blocked her exit. Shaking his head. "Hey, that's not it all. I know I've been acting like a dick. I'm sorry but I just had to clear my head. Look I'm going to be honest with you. I had a relationship end badly a while back and I guess it still takes its toll on me."
"Well I'm not like your last girlfriend." Carrie pointed out while crossing her arms. "So, if we're going to do this. Then you need to let the past go and not compare me to her. Because I'm my own person. So if we're going to do, whatever this is, then I need you to make sure that you're ready for this."
"So, how's it going between you and Jax?" Donna turned to look at Carrie. Handing her a glass of wine.
"I don't even know," Carrie shook her head. "He's hot one minute and then the next he's cold. I finally got him to talk to me today."
Donna sighed. "Look he had a rough patch. A long term relationship gone bad."
"Yeah, he mentioned something about that but he didn't give me any details about it."
Donna stared at her before sighing. "He should be the one to tell you but since it's common knowledge. I'm going to tell you what I know and only because I care about you." Carrie nodded waiting for Donna to talk.
"You know Tara Knowles? She's a doctor at Saint Thomas," Donna informed, pausing to look at Carrie. Once she nodded, Donna sipped at her glass. "Well, she and Jax were together. I'm talking high school sweethearts. Once him and Opie patched in, she became his old lady soon after that."
"Old lady?" Carrie looked at Donna confused.
"It's a term used by the club. It means that you're the wife or steady girlfriend of one of the guys. It's like you're basically married to the guy or it's heading that way." Donna explained. "I don't know how other clubs work but with SAMCRO when you become an old lady you get a crow tattoo. And once you're an old lady then you're off limits to other members. You're a part of the family and you're protected by them."
"So, Tara has a crow tattoo?"
"Yeah and I don't if you've noticed but Gemma does too. Only Gemma's is noticeable when she wears certain shirts since she has it on here." Donna answered motions towards her left breast. "Anyways, so Tara was Jax's old lady but then one day she just left. Never came back until recently. But Jax was heartbroken when she split."
"Do you think that now that she's back, they'll get together again?"
"Not if Gemma has any say in. See Gemma is protective of her son, which you'll find out soon enough once she hears about you and Jax. Tara broke his heart and that's something that Gemma hasn't forgiven nor will she ever." Donna finished her glass of wine before pointing towards Carrie. "You want another one?"
Carrie shook her head motioning towards her half full glass. Mulling over what Donna had just told her.
"Look, Jax is wary about relationships. His first love broke his heart and his wife turned out to be a junkie who almost killed his son. I say give him some time and then talk to him. Lay your cards on the table and let him know what's going on."
Carrie shook her head. "That's the thing Donna. I don't know if I can compete with someone like Tara. I might be way over my head on this."
Donna reached forward and grasped onto Carrie's hand. "Just give him some time and then make your move. Let him clear his head for now."
Carrie was walking back to the nurses' station when she bumped into someone. Causing her to stop the chart she was going over. "I'm sorry I wasn't looking where I was going."
She looked up as the person handed her the chart. Noticing that the person she had bumped into was none other than Deputy Chief Hale, the officer who had taken in her testimony when the incident at Fun Town occurred.
"How are you doing Ms. Blake?"
"Good and yourself?" She took him in, dressed in his uniform. Before looking into his blue eyes, which were nice but didn't cause butterflies to erupt like Jax's did.
"Good. Listen I wanted to talk to you about something." David nervously bit his before sighing as he placed his hands on his hips. "I was wondering if maybe you would want to get dinner or lunch sometime?"
Carrie was flattered but she knew she couldn't. At least not while she had whatever was going on with Jax. "I appreciate the offer but I'm kind of seeing someone at the moment. I'm sorry."
David nodded. "Guess I was too late huh?"
"Only a little," Carrie softly laughed before giving him a small smile. "I'm sorry again but I should get back to my rounds."
"It's Jax isn't it." David stated as she started to walk away. Causing her to stop but she didn't turn around as her shoulders tensed up. "You know someone like him shouldn't be with someone like you."
Carrie looked over her shoulder at Hale but didn't respond. Instead she narrowed her eyes at him and bit her lip to keep her from offending him.
"Him and his club are only going to bring trouble to your door," David stepped closer. "My advice is to not get further involved with him."
"I appreciate the advice but I'm a big girl. I can make my own choices. Good day Deputy Chief."
"What the hell happened to you?"
"Got into a disagreement." Jax limped as he closed the distance between them. "Going to invite me in?"
"I don't know, are you going to be a dick afterwards?" Carrie stepped aside, watching him slowly make his way into her apartment. " You sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine," He answered waving off her concern "Come here. We need to talk."
They both sat down on her couch, Carrie waiting for Jax to pull his thoughts together. "I care about you and I'm sorry if me being a dick didn't make it seem that way. But I do care about you and I want to see where this goes."
"Are you sure?" Carrie scooted closer. "Because if we do this then we both need to put one hundred percent. It wouldn't be fair to either of us if we didn't."
Jax nodded, caressing her cheek before kissing her. "I'm sure."
"Okay then." Carrie softly smiled before sighing. "Since we're doing this I figure honesty is a given which is why I'm going to tell you this," Carrie paused being her lip before looking away. "I ran into Deputy Chief Hale and he invited me out on a date."
"He what?"
"I told him I couldn't because I was kinda seeing someone," Carrie said placing a hand on his arm to calm him down. "I guess he didn't take it that well because he warned me about you and the club. I told him I could make my own choices but how did he know it was you I was seeing?"
"Hale has it out for us but I appreciate you letting me know," Jax said as he pulled her closer to him. "I don't know how he knows but at this point I don't care. At least now he knows not to mess with you anymore. How about me and you go out to dinner tomorrow night? Make this thing official with a date."
"Really?" Carrie sat up straight, excited at the idea.
"Yeah. You're not working the night shift right?"
Carrie shook her head. "Nope. I'll be done by seven."
"Okay. So I'll pick you up say eight-thirty. Wear something nice but that you can ride with." Jax said before kissing her. Now that Kohn was out of Charming, Jax felt like he could try to move on form Tara. Especially since he didn't feel like he had to look after her anymore.
