I know, three chapters in one day lol.
It's thanks to my guilty conscience about the direction of the previous chapters lol. But like I said not everything is rainbows and butterflies. Hope you guys enjoy.
Plus I'm giving a shout out to Shantigal, who gave me something to think about when it came to the direction of certain plot lines. I hope you guys enjoy.
Carrie moved around her room. Trying to hurry and finish getting ready before she was late for work. But the blond in her bed was making it difficult for her to want to leave.
"Stop staring," Carrie glanced over her shoulder before slipping on her long sleeve on.
"Can't help it babe."
Carrie turned around placing her hand on her hips. "And why is that?"
Jax gave her a sly smile. "Because I like admiring your beauty."
Carrie laughed. "That was extremely cheesy," She said shaking her head.
"I know but it's true. You look good with clothes but you look better without them."
"Seriously? I sleep with you a few times and now that's all you think about. I must have seriously rocked your world huh." Carrie teased as leaned down and kissed him. Pulling back before he could deepen the kiss. Knowing that if she let him, she'd never make it out of that bed.
"Don't you mean I rocked yours?" Jax retorted while he got up and started to get dressed.
"I meant what I said. I'll see you out there." Carrie gave him smirk before leaving the room. Making sure to add some extra sway to her hips as she walked away. Smiling in satisfaction as he let out a groan.
Abel was getting out today and Wendy couldn't be happier.
Her boy had survived and made it but that still didn't mean that her guilt lessened. But it served as motivation to continue her journey to sobriety. She'd managed to stay clean for sixty four days and she wanted to stay clean this time. She had to, if not for herself then for Abel.
Especially, if she wanted a chance at being a family. Being sober was the only way to accomplish that. Even, if the urge for a fix was strong, she needed to be stronger in order to fight it. Her family was on the line and that was something she didn't want to lose.
Wendy now had a reason to get and stay clean. She'd gotten a second chance and she didn't want to do anything to ruin that.
Turning the corner, Wendy smiled at one of the nurses before freezing. Feeling her smile fade away as she took in the sight of Jax and Tara. Making her dreams come crumbling down, as she watched Jax hug and kiss Tara.
Wendy didn't have to be in the room, to know that she was looking at her as if she were the only girl for him. She'd lived through him pining over the girl who broke his heart. Hell, she was pretty sure their marriage was because of it. It was him trying to get over Tara but not being able to move on.
And now seeing them together, brought back the resentment and worthlessness she had felt at not being able to compare to Tara in Jax's eyes.
Shaking her head, she knew she had to get out of there or she wouldn't be able to fight the need for a fix much longer. Taking one last look before spinning on her heel, bumping into a redheaded nurse. She muttered an apology before high tailing it out of there as fast as she could.
"Why'd you feed me that bullshit last night?" Wendy questioned Gemma, not being able to hold her tongue anymore. "That whole line about if I loved Jax and wanted my family back. That'd you help anyway you could."
Wendy turned to face Gemma as she moved around the living room. Setting up the banners for Abel's homecoming. "It was to push Tara out of the picture wasn't it?"
Gemma paused letting the banner fall. "What do you care what my motives are Wendy? In the end we both get what we want."
"I'm not going to be your puppet. I'm not going to be used to hurt Jax. You remember what losing Tara did to him the first time."
"Wow, you stay off the spoon for a few weeks and now you think your'e so high and mighty. Well, let me tell you something, you don't have to do it. But just know that the family you wanted so much is going to slip through your fingers." Gemma paused leaning closer to Wendy. "There's always someone else to fill your spot. There's a nurse Jax has been getting close to, I'm sure she wouldn't mind playing mommy to Abel."
Gemma looked at Wendy one last time, before she continued setting up. "And of course I remember what it did to him. He married a junkie whore from Nevada."
"So, Abel is finally going home today," Carrie informed as she swirled her straw around in her lemonade.
Donna nodded, before swallowing the bite of food in her mouth. "I know, Gemma's throwing him a welcoming home party today. Are you going?"
Carrie nodded. "Yeah, I got lucky that I'm working the day shift. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to go."
"So you and Jax are on good terms now? You guys worked it out?" Mackenzie questioned, speaking up for the first time. As she had remained silent, mulling over what she had seen at the hospital.
Carrie nodded before softly smiling. "I think so. I mean he hasn't labeled this yet but I think we're on the same page now."
"He just needed some time to figure things out," Donna said, reaching over to squeeze her hand. Before giving her a sly smile. "So, any juicy details you want to share?"
Carrie blushed before shrugging. "I don't kiss and tell."
Donna shook her head before calling her out. "Bullshit. That blush is not over something so trivial as kissing. You've slept together haven't you?"
"You've slept with him?"
Carrie furrowed her brows at Mackenzie's tone. Trying to gauge the redhead's emotions, if any one would have pressed her for details or teased her it would have been Mackenzie. But she'd been acting off since earlier. "What's going on with you?"
"Nothing. I just can't believe that you'd sleep with him is all."
"You're the one who encouraged me from the beginning," Carrie pointed out as Mackenzie shifted in her seat.
"Yeah but that was before I knew he was an asshole. I'm mean he stood you up and ignored you for two weeks."
Carrie narrowed her eyes, leaning forward. "What's really bothering Kenz? You've been off since this morning."
Donna sat quietly, glancing between the two nurses. She had noticed Mackenzie's odd behavior but put it off as something work related. But she'd noticed that as soon as the conversation shifted onto the topi of Jax. She became even more frustrating and Donna had caught actually being her lip to keep quiet.
Mackenzie let out a frustrated sigh. "I just don't know why'd you even give him another chance when all he's done is hurt you. I just don't want to see you get hurt, okay."
"There's more to it, so spill it Kenz," Carrie demanded. Knowing it wasn't just because of what had happened. There was more to the story and Kenz was holding out on her.
"He's cheating on you okay. I needed Dr. Knowles to sign off on a patient, so I went looking for her. Found her with Abel but she wasn't alone. Jax was there," Mackenzie held up a hand. "And no, they weren't talking. He kissed her before hugging her. They remained that way for a good while too. I wasn't the only one to see them though. Abel's mother, Wendy, saw them too. She looked real heartbroken over it."
Carrie remained silent, while staring down at the table. Before shaking her head not knowing what to believe anymore. Jax had been with her any chance the two of them had but Mackenzie hadn't lied to her and she clearly had no reason to do it now. Jax on the other hand had stood her up and ignored her for two weeks.
Who was to say that Mackenzie was wrong?
"Can I talk to you? In private?"
"Sure, Abel's room or kitchen?" Jax motioned towards the options.
"Abel's room. I'm not sure you're going to want other people to listen in on what I have to say." Donna answered before waiting for Jax to led the way.
"What's up Donna?" Jax questioned as soon as the stepped foot in the room. Leaning against the changing table.
Donna took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. While figuring out how to phrase what she wanted to ask before she decided to just rip the band aid off. "Did you or did you not kiss Tara Knowles today?" Jax remained silent but couldn't maintain eye contact with her. Giving her the answer.
Donna cursed under her breath. Feeling the anger surge through her veins. "You're such an asshole Jackson. Carrie really cares about you. You can't just play with her emotions or lead her on."
"What are you talking about Donna?"
"The fact that you and Tara were all lovey dovey at the hospital earlier today. Even after you've been sleeping with Carrie." Donna held up a hand. Preventing Jax from interrupting her. " Yeah I know. How can you do this to her?"
"Donna I didn't mean for this to happen. You think I want to hurt her?"
"Well it sure seems like it. Your actions certainly point at it. Do you like toying with her?" Donna started to pace, running her finger though her hair in frustration.
"No. I care about her too."
Donna stopped pacing long enough to look him directly in the eyes. "Do you love her?"
Jax looked down at his shoes. "Donna, I don't know. I really care for her, but it's too early to know if it's love."
"Well, I'm pretty sure she loves you. You're Opie's best friend. But Carrie is my best friend. Not to mention his sister . I dont want to see her get hurt."
"Believe me the last thing I want to do is hurt her." Jax explained, feeling angry at himself.
"Then get your shit together Teller. Don't hold onto the past because the memory of what was isn't always the best. People grow up and people change."
Jax nodded before he nervously ran his fingers through his hair. "I know and I'm not holding onto the past."
"Really? Then why is Tara around and don't say because she's a friend or Abel's doctor. She's your ex girlfriend. The one who broke your heart. Remember that."
"Fine, I don't know what this is okay?" Jax shrugged, shaking his head in frustration. "Everything is different with Carrie but I feel like there's more there or at least like there could be. But Tara being back brought up old feelings. Things ended abruptly the first time. There wasn't any closure."
"So this is about getting closure? Because I hate to break it to you but you don't need to sleep or be with your ex to get closure." Donna argued before sighing. Letting her shoulder relax. "Look Jax, I know you're confused. I get it, here's this amazing new girl who cares about you and brings up this emotions that you've only ever felt with Tara. The future of that relationship is uncertain and you don't want to go through another heartbreak. I get that, and I know you're skeptical and hesitant, but you can't let that hold you back."
"I also get that Tara was your first love," Donna paused, looking away, before facing Jax once more. "Don't forget we all witnessed how crazy you were about her, but we also witnessed how broken up you were when she left. Do you even know if she still loves you?"
Jax looked down. Hesitant to answer the question. He was uncertain about it himself. Knowing that when he asked her that question she had hesitated. Not being able to answer because in her words the answer wasn't that simple.
Donna noticed the hesitance. "Better yet do you still love her?"
"I always will."
"But are you still in love with her?" Donna waits for Jax to answer. Seeing him hesitate once again. "Because I know some part of you will always love her. She was your first love. It's hard to forget that person. But loving someone and being in love with someone are two completely different things."
Donna reached her hand out. Softly squeezing his hand in comfort. Hoping it would soften her next statement. "One thing is certain. If you're confused about your feelings, don't lead Carrie on while you figure it out. She deserves better than being someone's place holder and you know it."
Carrie was driving home from the Hospital when she noticed that the street was blocked off. Cop cars with their lights flashing and an ambulance, were blocking the street. People were crowded in the street corner closest to her looking on at the scene. She was just about to turn her car around when she noticed the truck.
Feeling her heart drop as she realized it was exactly like Opie's. Quickly pulling aside before turning her car off and making her way towards the scene. Pushing past the crowd seeing the full extent of the damage inflicted. From her vantage point she was able to see that the back window had been shot through.
She wasn't able to see who was in the truck yet. As the police department were still taking witness statements while the EMT's were assessing the victim. Other officers were making sure the crowd stayed back and the area remained clear.
Looking off to the side, Carrie made eye contact with Deputy Chief Hale, before pushing her way through the crowd. Passing her car and going around the police cruisers. Stopping behind Hale, who turned around to face her. "Is it Opie?"
Shaking his head he looked to the ground as he clenched his jaw. Before looking up at her, knowing her connection to Opie and Donna. Even though informing relatives was apart of his job. He found himself not being able to find the words to break the identity of the victim. Trying to spare her from the pain or maybe he was trying to calm his own conscious. Knowing who had caused and was responsible for this act yet he still felt guilty because the what ifs crossed his mind.
"Who is it? Because that looks a lot like Opie's truck."
David shook his head. "It's not Opie. Carrie I'm so sorry."
"Why are you sorry? You said it wasn't Opie," Carrie grabbed his arm. Before pleading with him. "David please tell me who it is. If it's not Opie then who is it? Is it Donna? Please tell me it's not Donna?"
David reached forward to calm her but she shrugged his hand off. Side stepping him to get a better vantage point. The EMT's had opened the truck door and were crowded around the driver's side as they began to remove the body. A body that hung limp and lifeless between them and even though their bodies obscured her view. She was still able to make out the clothes the victim was wearing.
It was the same clothes Donna had been wearing earlier, filling her body with dread. Not wanting to believe that it was Donna. But as the EMT'S laid the body on the gurney, Carrie caught a glimpse of the victim's face. Making her cry out as she ducked beneath the yellow tape.
She barely even heard Hale call off the officer trying to stop her or the roar of motorcycle engines. All she could feel was the pounding of her heart.
Carrie shakily reached out, smoothing back Donna's hair as she took in the pale face of her best friend. Not caring that her hands were now bloody or that tears were rushing down her face. She didn't care that her lips were quivering or that she was biting them, probably causing them to bleed, while trying to contain her sobs.
All of that didn't matter because this was her best friend, her sister. The wife of her brother and the mother of her niece and nephew and even though the confirmation was right in front of her. She was still in denial that it was Donna.
Because in her mind this wasn't real. It was just a nightmare that she would soon wake up from and everything would be fine.
But this wasn't a nightmare.
This was really happening and hearing her brother call out for his wife made it more real. Carrie slowly moved, placing a bloody quivering hand over her mouth while trying to muffle her sobs. Letting Opie take her spot as he started to assimilate the tragedy of seeing his wife in that state. Feeling her heart completely shatter as she watched her brother cry over his wife's body.
"I'm sorry but we need to get moving," One of the paramedic said. "That's the only way we're going to have a chance to save her."
Not being able to contain her sobs anymore, she had to turn away from the heart breaking scene. Shutting her eyes as her body shook from the sobs before she felt a pair of arms wrap around her. Holding her tighter every time a sob escaped, trying to comfort her but not saying a word. Instead letting her cry, getting it out of her system before they slowly began to move her. Making sure to shield her view as they walked her away from the scene.
"You okay to stand on your own?"
Carrie gasped trying to catch her breath while trying to quiet her sobs. Before nodding and looking up at Kip. "Thank you and I'm sorry about your shirt."
Kip shook his head."Don't worry about it."
Carrie nodded looking over towards Opie, who Jax had managed to coax away from Donna, standing by the car. Jax was supporting him while Chibs stood in front of to keep him from falling forward as he cried.
She slowly made her way over, Kip following in case her legs gave out. Before she leaned into him. Silently offering her support, sharing his heartache.
"Did they call you too?" Opie gruffly questioned, looking towards her after he had managed to calm his tears.
"No. I was on my way home when I saw that," Carrie answered motioning towards the scene. "I was going to turn my car around when I noticed the truck so I parked my car off to the side. I was here when they removed her from the truck." Carrie shook her head looking away, trying to keep the tears at bay.
Neither saying anything anymore. Instead they silently watched as Donna's body was taken away.
"Where are the kids?" Carrie softly questioned, as she had glanced into the back seat.
"They're at home with Pop and Mary, my mother," Opie answered, still looking at where Donna had been.
"We should get going then." Carrie softly suggested looking up at Opie.
"You two going to be okay to drive?" Jax questioned as the remaining people formed a semi circle around them.
"Yeah I'll be fine man,"Opie answered before he turned to Carrie. "What about you?"
"I can manage to make the drive to the hospital."
"We'll drive behind them. Make sure they make it alright." Unser said looking at Hale.
"I think we all will," Clay stated, with agreement form the rest of the club.
"I'm just gonna stop at my place, change out of my scrubs and I'll be over soon. Okay?" Carrie said, squeezing Opie's arm. Reluctant to move from her spot but knowing that they couldn't stand in the street all night. They needed to get to the hospital and they needed to get there quick.
Carrie walked away as the guys patted Opie on the back in encouragement. Reassuring him that Donna was strong.
David sighed as they stopped next to her car. "You sure you'll be alright? I can drive you home, your car should be safe here."
"I'm okay, I think I can make it," Carrie replied while looking down at her her hands caked in dry blood. Trying to suppress her emotions, at least until they knew more.
"Okay. I'll be right behind you."
Carrie had quickly driven home. Quickly washing her hands and changing into more comfortable clothes. Not really paying attention to what she had on. Her mind on getting to the hospital as soon as possible.
The only time she had paused was to text her supervisor, to let her know she'd be taking a few days off. But other than that, she had tried to move as quickly as she could.
David offered to drive her to the hospital, since it'd be faster. Making the drive even shorter, since he flashed his lights and turned the siren on.
She quickly thanked him before running into the hospital and going up to the SICU, surgical intensive care unit. Knowing that patients who were severely ill and in need of surgery were taken up there. St. Thomas might have been a small town hospital, and the only one in Charming, but it was a very well equipped hospital for the most part. Which Carrie was currently thankful for because she didn't know if Donna would have made the long trip into any of the neighboring big cities.
Stepping off the elevators, the first thing she saw were the kuttes as they lingered in the hall, waiting for news. Before hearing the elevator open behind her. Carrie stepped forward so she wasn't blocking the doors, before making her way towards the nurses station and noticing the empty waiting room.
"Hey Katie, is there any news on Donna Winston?" Carrie questioned the blonde nurse.
Katie glanced up at the large group who had moved behind her, waiting to hear any news, before quickly typing on the computer. "They have in her in surgery, they took her in immediately as soon as she got here. As soon as they update anything I'll let you know," Katie softly promised.
"Thank you," Carrie softly smiled before turning back towards the group. "They have her in surgery. So if you plan on waiting, make yourselves comfortable. It's going to be a while before they let us know anything else."
Carrie had expected for them to leave but was surprised when they all went to sit down. She noticed Gemma and Wendy, who had brought Abel in his car seat. Revealing that they were the ones to arrive shortly after she did.
They were all quiet, each one lost in there own thoughts regarding the tragic incident that had brought them to . But each were praying and hoping, in their own way, for a miracle.
Opie couldn't lose his wife and his kids couldn't lose their mother. Not when Donna and him had finally gotten on the same page about the club.
While they were hoping for the best, they were also preparing for the worst because while the extent of Donna's injuries were unknown. One thing was for certain and it was that it looked really bad.
Carrie continuously glanced between the clock and the nurses' station. Hoping for some news but not receiving any. She had just resigned herself to give up, when Katie motioned her over.
"She's out of surgery," Katie softly informed. Trying to keep her voice down. "Someone should be here soon to come and talk to the family. That's all I know."
Carrie thanked her before turning around, noticing that once again all eyes were on her. "Someone should be here soon to give us more information," Carrie said, omitting the fact that Donna was out of surgery, since she didn't know her condition. Knowing that if she mentioned that fact they would expect more and she dint have that information.
It had taken almost another hour before one of the trauma surgeons walked into the waiting room. Seeing as they were the only ones in the waiting room, he didn't question if they were there for Donna.
"Whose the immediate family of Donna Winston?"
Opie stood up before looking towards Carrie. "I'm her husband and this is my sister," Opie said as both he and Carrie stood before the doctor.
"I'm Dr. Matthews, I'm the trauma surgeon who performed and oversaw your wife's surgery," he introduced before glancing around the room. Before quietly posing his next question. "You mind if I inform everyone or would you just like me to inform you two privately?"
"They're family." Opie stated, trying to remain keep a level head.
Dr. Matthews nodded before speaking up. "We managed to stop the bleeding but we had to perform a blood transfusion. Unfortunately, because her condition was critical when she got here, we weren't able to fully see the extent of her injuries. Since, the main priority became to cease the bleeding, to keep her from bleeding out on the operating table."
Dr. Matthews sighed, knowing the next bit of information was going to be difficult for them to hear. "We lost her twice, once on the way here and another once we had her in the OR. Both times we managed to get her back but the next twenty four hours are very critical. If she manages to make it through the night and is stable enough tomorrow. We may be able to take her back into surgery and see how extensive her injuries are."
"For now, all we know is that one of the bullets hit her right shoulder, severing the brachial artery, which is what caused her to almost bleed out. Another grazed the head and the other grazed her left arm. Both grazes were pretty deep but not enough to cause her to bleed out. My main concern is the shoulder, as gun shot wounds in that area are very tricky," Dr. Matthews explained. "For now, we have her sedated and on a ventilator. And we will monitor her very closely over night. If she makes it until morning, then we will decide the what the next step is going to be."
"Seeing as she is in critical condition and visiting hours are over. You will have access to her room, usually we don't allow this but given the circumstances," Dr. Matthews let his unfinished sentence hang in the air. "Don't give up hope, someone must have been looking out for her during the accident. I'd suggest praying for another miracle."
So a little explanation for this chapter:
You guys have Shantigal to thank for this plot twist who actually suggested that Donna live in their comment. And after reading why. I really loved the idea and started to immediately think of ideas on how to incorporate it into my story. Along with mulling over the chapters I had written already before going back and making the changes.
Not to mention I did research on gun shot wounds and their survival rate. Along with the surgery that goes along with treating such trauma.
Which, if anyone were to check my browser history, they'd think I was crazy or I'd probably end up getting arrested, just in order to make it realistic, even if this is fan fiction, I want the storyline and events to be as realistic (or at least semi realistic ) as possible.
Obviously, I won't include all the information, if any, I researched just the gist of it. Mainly to get my point across.
Not going to lie I was a little iffy about this, even though I loved the idea. Only because I wasn't sure if I could make it believable but most importantly because Donna's death is what set off Opie's storyline in the show.
But after a lot of deliberation and writing notes and research. I ended up saying screw it, this is my story anyways. So I get to choose my own storyline, and I don't necessarily have to follow canon.
So I didn't, so I hope you guys enjoy this little plot twist.
But the real question is will Donna actually make it?
Or will I end up changing my mind and kill her character off in the next chapter?
Let me know in the comments below.
Don't forget to COMMENT, FOLLOW.
I greatly appreciate the comments and follows.
Anyways I hope that this serves as a little bit of an incentive for you guys to not only let me know what you liked or didn't like but also make suggestions. I actually read and take them into consideration. You never know one of them might make it into the story as proven on this chapter.
I hope to continue to hear more from you guys, on this and in future chapters. In the meantime stay safe.
