The Mentor
Wanda Maximoff stood in the middle of the living room, watching as the woman she was sent to speak to was setting the large dining table with magic. She had never seen anyone perform magic outside of Dr. Strange. And to see this woman, who for all she knew wasn't nearly as skilled as she was, setting a table? That wasn't power!
"Do tell, how is it that you have come to me to learn how to control your powers?" Hermione asked. "I would have thought Dr. Strange would be more appropriate a teacher given the type of magic you weld."
"You're correct," Wanda said tightly. "I should go to him. If I wanted to learn how to set a table, I could have gone to a butler for tutelage."
Hermione stopped what she was doing and turned to look at her. "You think that much of yourself?"
"I can do anything I set my mind to," she said tightly.
"I have no doubt of that," she answered. "But power without control means nothing."
"I…"
"You killed how many people because you couldn't control your magic?" The question had Wanda sucking in a breath, hurt now glowing in her eyes. "That wasn't meant to hurt or insult. You have power and arrogance to spare. But until you let go of your ego and learn that you aren't the end all, be all…" Hermione shrugged. "There will come a time when your ego will sign a check that your magic can't cash. And it won't be you doing the paying, but everyone around you in that moment. My suggestion is that you learn what you can to control your powers. And when you do so, you do it for yourself."
Wanda frowned, "Why for myself?"
"Because you're going to be the one to recall at the most inconvenient times just what happens when your magic goes beyond your control. And next time it happens, you might not have someone there to protect you from either the results of your mishap in the courts or your own mind playing what happens on a loop in your head every time you close your eyes."
Wanda's head lowered slightly before asking, "What do I do?"
"Now we eat and have a chat," Hermione answered, motioning to one of the other seats. "Breakfast and a good conversation are never remiss." She magically served them both their food, as she asked, "So are you having a good morning?"
Wanda looked around and back over to Hermione, who was already sipping her coffee. Snickering to herself, Wanda served herself a juice.
"I never knew that there were more than myself out in the world that was a witch," Wanda told her.
"Ah, it is much like Shakespeare wrote," Hermione told her. "'There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio Than are dreamt of in your philosophy'."
Blushing Wanda said, "I am unfamiliar with this Shakespeare."
The other witch went still before declaring, "We are going to be rectifying that as well."
After a week of reading and magic training, Wanda truly wondered just what she had gotten herself into.
