The Elemental

Hermione stepped into the gym next to Bucky, looking around the large workout area as she did so. She had needed a private place to exercise that was big enough for her to truly flex her magical muscles without being seen by someone who shouldn't be seeing her.

Thor was lifting weights, Natasha was doing stretches off in another corner, and Tony kept asking whomever passed him if they could "check out his guns"—whatever the hell that meant. Clint, who just arrived behind them, stepped around Hermione and gave her a smile as he joined Thor in the weight area.

"Are you going to be okay on your own?" Bucky asked her. "I told Steve I'd go a few rounds with him in the ring."

"Go on," she told him, as she went over to the floor area usually reserved for hand to hand combat training. "Have fun, darling!"

That only had him laughing, as he knew that was her idea of a joke.

Hermione set down her workout bag, pulling out a hygrometer and gaged the amount of moisture in the gym. Smiling to herself, she knew she'd be able to do what she had wanted.

She was in the middle of her stretches when she noticed how a few of the others there paused just long enough to look over to her. Hermione was in the middle of wrapping her hands, wrists, and trying to determine if she needed to do the same with her feet and ankles when Tony walked over to where she was.

"What are you up to?" he asked. "It's not as if you're going to go into combat."

Looking over to him, as she went back to stretching her arms when she asked, "Do you always make a pest of yourself here or is today a special occasion?"

"Just because you're married to a big, mean guy doesn't make it an automatic thing for you to be one as well," Tony drawled.

"Very true, but then again I never said I was." She stretched her arms before shaking them out. "You best move off the mat. Once I get going, I don't tend to stop until I'm finished."

"Whatever you say, Glenda," he replied, strolling away from her.

Tony was walking over towards the weights when he heard several gasps and a few exclamations. Spinning around, he saw what the others were so amazed about. Hermione was standing in the middle of the mats with her hands extended to both sides were two balls of what looked to be water were floating above her palms. She lifted her fingers up and touched the spheres of water, freezing one solid and setting the other on fire.

Hermione kneeled and pressed her right palm to the ground. Closing her eyes, several of them thought she was pray, but were disabused of this notion when she slowly lifted her hand up and a ball that looked like dirt or clay broke through the flooring. It hit into her palm and soon it too joined the other two. Absently she waved her left hand, fixing whatever was broken by what she did. The curly haired witch went back to concentrating fully on the three spheres in front of her, never taking notice of those around her watching her.

She moved so that soon she was a breath away from the ice. Closing her eyes, she sent a stream of air at it. The ice ball began to circulate around her, as she went on to the ball of fire. Again, she pursed her lips and repeated what she did with the ice to send the fireball circling around her as well, but this one in a different direction. Next and last was the ball of earth and it too was almost immediately rotating around her as well.

Hermione was soon dancing in and out of the ring of spheres, each time with them getting faster and faster. Her movements were fluid and the way she went about it made it look like she had been doing this dance of danger for ages. By the time she was finished, she was covered in sweat. Having managed to tire herself out both physically and magically, about the only thing she had on her mind was getting a shower, getting something to eat, and sleeping for a week.

But apparently this was too much to ask for, as Tony Stark just wasn't going to allow this until after he got some answers.

"How the hell did you do that?!" Tony demanded, as he went over to her.

"Magic," she answered quietly.

Bucky walked over with a clean hand towel and gave it over to her.

Smiling at him, she murmured a thank you, even as Tony was saying, "That was more than magic."

"Oddly enough, I always thought magic was rather impressive on its own," Hermione replied dryly. She extinguished the fire ball, revealing that the water was at that time gone. Melted the ball of frozen water and had what looked like a small ball of crystals drop into her hand. Tossing the crystalline structure over to Tony, she went on with cleaning up after herself. Sadly, about the only thing she could do with the ball of clay was dump it into her bag. She would find a use for it. She always tended to do so.

"Close your mouth, Tony, before you start catching flies," Hermione told him. She was checking the building for any more damage she might have done to it without thinking about it. Merlin, but she really needed to be more careful about these things. Next time, she reasoned, she'd get the earth ball beforehand.

"So what you're saying is that all witches can do what you just did?" Tony started up again.

"No that isn't what I said," she snapped. "You asked me how I did it. Specifically, you asked me 'How the hell did you do that?!'" She looked at him. "And I answered 'Magic'. Simple and to the point, as that is how I did that." She frowned, adding, "I'm an elemental witch. I've made no secret of this fact. And I know that I've told you as much in the past. If you didn't retain it or thought something different without bothering to ask me anything that's on you."

Turning to Bucky, she went on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek. "I'm headed back now. Have fun, James."

"Thanks, sweetheart," he answered, as she was still getting her wits about her. "Are you sure you don't want company back?"

"I'm fine," she assured him. "One thing, if I'm still asleep when you get back, will you please order dinner in?"

"What do you want?"

"Dealer's choice," she murmured, backing away from him. Blowing him a kiss, she turned on her heel and vanished with a small pop.

"You know, I honestly thought she was nothing more than a groupie until today," Tony said casually, even as Bucky was turning to glare at him.

"She's a powerful, intelligent witch," Wanda told him. "She told me that she didn't whip out her magic in front of others for any old reason. And I agree with her. The true test of power isn't when you use it, but when you don't."

"My, aren't you the well-spoken individual these days," Tony droned sarcastically.

Wanda only shook her head and went back to her own workout, using the fuel of her irritation to push herself further.

"You're a jackass, Tony," Bruce said, as he went over to him.

"Like I didn't know that," he muttered. "I wonder what Dr. Strange makes of her?"

"I think she's one of the most powerful elementals on the planet and it would pay not to irritate her least you find out that she has a very strong connection to lightning," Stephen said, as he joined them from the weightlifting area.

"She welds lightning?!" Thor boomed, his face glowing with both sweat and joy at this news he was told. "I must see this one day!"

"Talk about something no one wants to happen in a major city center," Bruce murmured, having the others around him nodding in agreement.

"Stark, you need to start respecting the powers of those around you," Stephen told him. "Being egocentric is one thing, being an egocentric jackass is completely another." When all Tony did was glare at him, he finished with, "I'm speaking from painful experience, Stark. Learn from it."

Bucky grabbed up his own things and was wiping his face with a towel around his neck, as he said, "She's not one to brag. I doubt she ever has been. But that doesn't mean she's due any less respect, Stark."

"What? Are you going to beat me up if I'm not nice to her?"

Bucky grinned an evil smile, as he told him, "Me? Oh no, on the contrary. It's not me you have to be concerned with. It's my wife."

"You still have to ask what you did even after seeing what she could do?" Bruce asked him. "Have you retained a head injury in that last battle we didn't see?"

He frowned, answering, "No." After a second or two, he rolled his eyes and muttered, "Okay, I see your point." Thinking it over, he asked, "If she's as powerful as everyone seems to think, why isn't she a part of the Avengers?"

"Because she's our secret weapon," came from Coulson who had just walked in the doors of the gym. "I would have thought that was rather obvious, Stark." Looking to everyone there, he announced, "Hank Pym is missing." He looked around inquiring, "Must it be said?" When no one said anything, he went on with, "Avengers assemble."

TBC…

I just had to end this oneshot with that line! It wouldn't have been an Avengers crossover without it showing up at least once. Thanks for reading. Take care and I hope that you're all having a delightful day.
