3 months later* (March)
Jamie and Eddie finished planning there wedding it was going to be on July 18th. They were soaking up the last few months they had to work together as partners. Eddie was taking it harder then Jaime was. She never had another partner. She graduated the academy and was given to Jaime basically the next day.
They were walking the streets and decided to go into Trader Joe's for a fresh sandwich.
"Janko you know it's only 11:15 right?" Jaime asked her. This girl eats all the time.
"Yeah so?" Eddie said to him. She didn't care. She can maintain her weight so why should she starve. Jaime just nodded like never mind it's fine.
They ordered there sandwiches and Marco the guy running the counter let them have them for free. They often get their food for free if the vendor likes cops or one of them puts on the charm. They stood there talking about where they wanted to patrol/eat after this. When all of a sudden a little girl ran up and wrapped her arms around Jamie's legs. He was caught of guard and they both looked down flustered.
"Oh" Eddie said and Jaime looked at her confused. He grabbed the girl at her underarms to pull him off his leg.
"Hey." He said as he got her off his leg and bend down to her level, taking off his hat, trying to see her face and if she was hurt or upset.
"Hi sweet heart, what's your name? Are you lost?" Jaime asked her finally seeing her gorgeous green eyes as he tucked her hair back behind her ears. The little girl shook her head no. She had to be no older then 4.
"Emmalyn. My mommy yelled at me." She said. Eddie left to look around for the girls mom.
"Aw well why would she do that?" Jaime asked her. She looked at him with tears in her eyes. She was half scared. Jaime noticed a scratch in her chin that looked like it was from a nail.
"Because." She said and got shy looking at the floor. Eddie came back.
"Want me to call it in Reagan?" She asked but he shook his head no. He knew If they did it would be going straight to cps.
"Emmalyn why did your mommy yell at you?" Jaime asked her concerned. Eddie realized this wasn't just a lost child. She was scared of her parent. She bend down to help Jaime talk to her.
"I had an accident." Emmalyn said now crying more as she grew upset with the idea. Eddie made a sad face and hugged her from the back. Jaime changed his view point in Emmalyn's pants. There was a thick trail down each leg marking it wet. Jaime looked back at Eddie.
"Honey let's go try and find your mommy okay?" Eddie asked her. Jaime watched the little girls reaction to that. Her eyes widened and she bee lined it into jaimes arms. Now scared of Eddie. Eddie was taken back.
"No!" She said, Jaime rubbed her back.
"Okay okay. How bout daddy? Do you have a daddy?" Eddie asked. The little girl shook her head no.
"Daddy is a bad guy." She said. Jamie and Eddie both very shocked at what this 3 year old was saying. Marco said there sandwich's were done and brought them to the register counter. Eddie got up to get them.
"Hey do you recognize this little girl?" Eddie asked him. He looked over the showcase. Marco looked back at her.
"That's Tom Watkins daughter" he said his face so serious.
"Tom Watkins the criminal!?" She said then shutting up realizing his daughter was right here. Jaime caught wind of what they said.
"Emmalyn why don't you want to find your mommy?" Jaime asked her.
"She yelled at me" the girl said.
"Because you had an accident?" Jaime asked. Emmalyn shook her head yes.
"Where did you get this boo boo from?" Jaime asked her pointing to the scratch on her chin. She touched his finger.
"mommy did that" she told jaime she then quickly got distracted by his badges.
"Where did you get those stickers?" She asked him. He laughed and said there part of his uniform.
"Jaime listen to this" Eddie said, nodding him to come listen to marco. Jaime stood up and took the little girl's hand and walked over to the counter.
"The mother comes in bout 3 times a week with her. She usually buys cigarettes and alcohol mixes. The little girl wonders all around we all know her. We had to call the police once because she left without her. She played it off like it was no big deal." Marco said.
"Has she ever shown signs of child abuse?" Jaime asked. Marco shook his head yes.
"Jaime we should call cps" Eddie said. Before Jaime could say anything Emmalyn pulled on his finger.
"Can we change my pants?" She wondered. Jaime looked down at her not knowing what to say. There was nothing to change her into. He looked at eddie.
"There's a children's boutique down the street I could go get her something while you call" Eddie told him.
"Yeah I wanna stay here in case she comes back." Jaime said as Eddie left. He got on the radio.
"12 David we got a 10:25 inside the Trader Joe's of court and Atlantic" Jaime said as Emmalyn pulled on his hand again.
"I'm hungry." She told jaime, he smiled.
"Your hungry? Whattt? Here what do you want?" Jaime asked her and picked her up to see in the glass wondering why no matter what age girl he's with she just wants to eat. Then he felt her wet pants in his hands and realized he was going to smell like pee. But he didn't care because she didn't care.
She picked out a bunch of different things so Marco put it all in a to go box and gave it for free. They went and sat in the back of the car and ate. She was so cute. Eddie walked back and got in the car.
"Alright got it. Cost me 30 but it's no big deal. Ugh your eating without me!?" She said.
"Surprisingly yes". Jaime laughed and handed her her sandwich. The little girl kept talking and saying random things like a typical 3 year old. Cps and another rmp showed up. Eddie got out to talk to them.
"Are you gonna take me home with you?" Emmalyn asked jaime. That broke his heart.
"Do you want to go get changed into dry pants?" He asked her, changing the subject. She shook her head yes and Jaime got out of the car and helped her out. Cps approached, he held out his hand like "stop" a second.
"Hello. We are just going to go get a new pair of pants on and we'll be back out." Jaime nodded to her and went back into Trader Joe's. Eddie came behind them.
"You want my help or you good?" Eddie asked. Jaime smiled.
"I have 2 nephews and a niece. This ain't my first rodeo." Jaime said grinning as Eddie realized he was probably better with kids then she ever will be. That's why she loved him. She watched as he carried Emmalyn to the bathroom with the bag of new clothes. Then turned to cps and told them what was going on.
Turns out the mom ran when she saw her daughter with the cops. She left a note with a bag full of random things of the emmalyns. The cps worker handed over the bag to show Eddie. Then a detective intervened and said
"We just got word, Ms.Watkins was seen at Toms apartment building. We're going to check it out" he said. Eddie got scared. Tom Watkins just got out and is on parol for domestic abuse against his wife. In the bag that Eddie was given the note just said "Emmalyn Nicole Watkins DOB 10/25/2017"
In the bathroom Jaime was rinsing emmalyns pants in the sink and putting them in the plastic bag while she sat on the toilet peeing.
"Okay I'm done" she told him. He didn't know if she needed help wiping or she was just telling him.
"Okay great. Do you need help?" He asked her walking torward the toilet paper on the wall she maybe couldn't reach.
"No! I do it. You can't watch" she told him. He was taken back and put his hands up and backed away laughing.
"Alright alright sorry! I'll turn around okay? But if you need help you let me know okay?" He said as he turned to stare at the wall. Little did she know he could watch her in the mirror. Making sure she didn't fall in or make mess with god knows what. This girl was very lively, in a way she reminded him how Eddie would have been as a kid. She wiped herself like all kids do. They don't even wipe far enough down and they throw it in the toilet after they stand up. He laughed because Nikki used to do the same thing.
"Okay done!" She said excitingly and clapped once then yelled
"Bye bye!" She waved into the toilet and looked at jaime
"Hey say bye bye to my pee!" She told him. He couldn't help but laugh and take the order from the confident toddler.
"Bye bye! Okay flush it" he said realizing anyone who would have just witnessed him wave at the toilet would never let him live it down. She flushed and and then needed to wash her hands. She was butt naked still.
"Okay let's put these on first okay?" He told her and showed her the underwear and pants Eddie got for her. She loved them and was so excited to put them on. Jaime knelt down and helped her step into them. She then reminded him about washing her hands. So he picked her up and helped her do that. When they were done he opened the door and took her hand as they walked back out to the squad car. Eddie smiled and waved to her trying to make her like her.
"All better!?" Eddie asked her bending kneeling down to her level smiling. Emmalyn let go of jaimes hand and ran into Eddies arms for a hug.
"Can I go home with you?" Emmalyn asked Eddie, Her heart broke. CPS intervenes and said "would you like to come see some new toys and friends?" Emmalyn was shy now she shook her head no. Jamie and Eddie looked at each other heart broken. Emmalyn wanted Jaime and Eddie to come with her. So Jaime went in the car with her and cps and Eddie drove the rpm behind them.
When they got to the building they sat in the playroom with Emmalyn waiting for the word on her parents situation.
"Janko, Reagan." The women called outside the room waving her hand for them to come. They got nervous and told Emmalyn they'd be right back. When they got out of the room the officer told them Tom murdered his wife when she went over there and then made the officer shoot him by attacking him.
Jaime and Eddies mouth dropped and they both teared up thinking about what was going to happen to Emmalyn now. She was such a sweet little girl you would never guess her home life was so bad. And now non existent.
