When Crawly was walking around the river banks he noticed how disgusting the only beautiful waters of the river used to be. There was so much trash and human waste there. There even were dead bodies within the river and the entire place reeked of Death.
He felt no angelic or demonic presence and had a burning desire to clean up the river. Mainly because he was scared the plants won't have any clean water to drink. Or at least this was what he told himself. There were settlements of humans on the river who he had already seen die from dysentery caused by the filthy water.
Okay, he had a soft spot for the tiny humans he had to admit. Even though all the humans were terrified of him for his eyes the children would sometimes come up and approach him without the all too familiar presence of fear in their eyes. It was refreshing. Demons and angels looked at him with hatred and humans with fear but at least the kids didn't care about his eyes too much.
Well, maybe not all the angels. He almost smiled thinking about the lovely and pure Aziraphale. He must have been in Heaven though whenever Crawly passed the mountains or the town of thieves and murders how could have sworn he felt that angelic presence. This was nonsense of course because why would an angel be where the most slaves were sold and where a full-grown man could be taken to a back alleyway and raped and beat to Death.
With that, he started miricling stuff out of the river to a ditch he had dug outside the town to miracle the garbage to. He worked on this for a long time. He actually got halfway down the river until he sensed something.
It wasn't human although he had sensed those who came from the town to clean their clothes and get water and it wasn't angelic or demonic and it certainly was too strong to be an animal. Crawly didn't even think any animals could survive within the filthy waters.
A figure rose up from the waters. She was wearing white that was tainted from the human waste and trash. She had curly white hair and almost completely transparent blue eyes.
She slowly moved towards Crawly and stepped up out from the river. Her veiled eyes upon him she tilted her head and seemed to consider him for a moment. He didn't know if he should run or stay but the figure was so transfixing he found himself glued to his spot.
"Demon Crawly Serpentant of Eden..." She said in a mocking tone. "What have you been doing to my river?"
Oh great! She knew who he was! Stupid snake tattoo and eyes!
"I was just doing some tempting for the humans." He said as he hid behind of mask of apathy. "You see I can get them to participate in even worse sins if I do little favors for them like cleaning up the river."
This wasn't completely untrue as most demons did use promises and did provide "aid" to the humans although it tended to have multiple strings attached. The figure did not seem too pleased with this answer.
"I see. But you are messing with my river. You can see where the dilemma is?"
"Yes, but don't you want a clean river? I mean the thing is pretty filthy with all those human remains and garbage in it and if you live in there it must smell and feel awful."
She cracked a smile at this and looked back at the river as though it were a painting.
"I know. Isn't it beautiful?"
Interesting to say the least.
"So what do you call yourself? I feel it is only fair if you know my name then you tell me yours."
The woman turned her head back slowly to Crawly at this before inhaling deeply.
"I am the monster of the river. The disgust and waste of humans. I am decaying flesh and broken glass. I am a problem to be solved with more than one complex solution which is why the humans have named me Pollution."
Pollution drew closer to Crawly causing him to back up. She smelled like shit water and it was unnerving. He didn't want her to touch him either.
"Just stay away from my river Crawly...the end times will be here and so much to do with so little time..."
Crawly nodded and watched the figure go back into the waters. As she sunk down she continued to give him an unnerving stare until her eyes disappeared below the surface.
