AN: Follow up on chapter 54!
"Asami, I know it's hard, but please calm down." Axis' voice was soft, warm. She had hung up and put the phone away again. Her hand still cupped the omega's cheek and her thumb affectionately brushed over the pale skin. "Look at me, look at me and do what I do, okay?"
Asami just nodded, holding onto Axis' hand for dear life and followed her instructions. She closed her mouth and breathed in through her nose, letting the air out again through her mouth and starting all over again. This along with Axis' scent, slowly calmed the omega down. It didn't take long for the people of the emergency services to get to the pair's location, and not before long Asami laid on a stretcher, still holding onto Axis' hand. When the alpha was about to let go, because Asami was taken to the ambulance, the grip tightened.
"Don't leave!" She looked around panicked and Axis immediately readjusted her grip. She let out a relieved sigh when Axis was allowed to ride along. "I'm sorry, I just… I need… someone familiar…" She admitted and let out a deep sigh.
"It's fine. I'm here, I'm not leaving until you tell me to. Can I call your mate for you perhaps?" She asked and Asami nodded at the question. The alpha was already holding Asami's shopping bags and purse, now using her free hand to look for the small device. It took her longer than expected and when she finally did find it, they were already at the hospital.
The two were separated when Asami was taken away to the trauma rooms behind closed doors. The alpha's heart was hammering in her chest, her hands shaking so badly that she needed to hold Asami's phone with both hands. She sat down at the waiting area and managed to find the number she needed to call.
The phone call was short and rather awkward to say the least. The way Korra reacted seemed like she was ready to jump through the phone and tear out Axis' throat. Needless to say, once they both hung up, it took Korra only half an hour before arriving at the hospital. Anxious and fuming, she looked around and found whom she was looking for. Recognizing the bag that Axis held, she made her way over to the other woman.
Even though she was about 3 inches shorter than Axis, she still grabbed her collar and pushed her against the wall. "Where's Asami!? What did you do to her!" She growled out the words as if they came from the deepest and darkest place of her very soul. Scaring away some other people from the waiting area.
Axis took a firm hold onto Korra's wrists, pulling them away from her collar and growling right back. "I didn't do anything to her! She just…" She swallowed hard at the memory of a pale Asami laying down. Axis took a deep breath, calming herself before she continued. "I don't know what's wrong… we were just talking when she suddenly felt pain. I called the emergency services who arrived within minutes. They took us here and, well… here we are. I called you as soon as I could." She said and looked at the door that Asami was taken through.
Korra pulled her hands away from Axis, still growling although much lower than before. She looked at the door that Axis was looking at. "That's where they took her…?" The other alpha nodded at her words.
Axis sat back down and Korra followed her example. Although keeping several seats between the two. Both sat there in silence and staring at the door. Neither of the alpha's were religious but at that very moment, they both prayed to the goddess Raava.
Hours later, their prayers were answered when a surgeon walked through the doors. His scrubs covered in bloodstains, he looked around the waiting area. "Miss Korra? Axis?"
Axis was surprised to hear her name but raised her arm up. "Yeah, over here."
Korra was the first one on her feet and rushed to the surgeon. "Ah, good. I have news about miss Sato. She had a minor bleeding but it's all under control now. She needs to stay here for a few days. For observation. If all goes well, she can go home but she can no longer do any work. She must stay in bed pretty much twenty four seven. Or else there might be risk of losing the pup."
"How is she now? How are they both?" Korra asked, nearly jumping the poor man in front of her.
"She's resting now and the pup is doing well. There is no damage done thanks to your quick thinking." He said and looked at Axis who just smiled and nodded faintly.
"It… was nothing, really." She said and cleared her throat.
"When can we go see her?" Korra asked and Axis raised her eyebrows in surprise. We?
The surgeon checked his watch before answering. "Well, right now. She has her own room and she should be awake by now." He said with a genuine smile on his lips. Both Korra and Axis let out a deep sigh in relief and were filled in on some details. One of those being Asami's room number. Once that was done, they were taken by a nurse who lead them to the room Asami was in.
Axis walked next to the shorter alpha and cleared her throat. "I'm… surprised, to say the least, that you're allowing me to come along."
Korra let out a dry laugh. "Heh… you saved my mate and my pup." She said and looked at the other woman. "I'm… sorry for being so dramatic earlier. Uh… I…" She rubbed the back of her neck, embarrassed.
This time it was Axis who laughed softly. "Well, I get it and apology accepted. You got a call from someone you don't know..."
"Oh, I do know you. Well, not personally… but Asami told me about you."
Axis' face turned a deep red. "O-oh… well… yeah." Axis let out a deep sigh and admitted that her reaction wasn't so great when she heard that Asami was pregnant. "I was an asshole." She said, still walking through the hallway, following the nurse. "I didn't think about any consequences after she and I had sex." She let out another sigh and Korra noticed her words to be genuine.
"I understand you know. Having a pup is hard and if you're as young as we are, your social life is pretty much over." Korra said and smiled at the nurse who left the two alphas in front of Asami's door. "I love Asami and I will love the pup. Even if, in the end, she might not be mine biologically."
Korra let her hand rest on the door handle for a moment and looked at the taller woman. "I don't know you, Axis, not on a personal level but you saved my family today. No matter what you did in the past, this makes up for it." With that, Axis smiled and Korra pushed open the door.
Asami turned her head towards the door and smiled when both entered. She looked tired and paler than usual. "Hey you two." She said with a weak voice. "I'm surprised to see you both in one piece." She said and let out a soft chuckle.
"Well, there might be a dent or two in a wall somewhere. Nothing that can't be fixed." Axis smirked, her arms crossed over her chest. Asami's eyes widened at the statement. "I'm kidding!" The alpha then said and Asai rolled her eyes while Korra laughed.
"You two.. ugh…" Asami said, pushing herself up just a bit with one arm while she cradled her stomach with the other. "Did you hear the news?" The question more towards Korra but both she and Axis nodded.
"You gotta stay in bed. No work, no stress, no nothing." Korra said and helped her mate get more comfortable.
Asami let out a sigh and shook her head. "We need to check on the insurance what they cover for the future hospital bills."
"You worry about something else, I'll worry about the money. I'll pick up more work, whatever it takes." She assured her mate and pecked Asami's cheek.
"If I may.. I can help too." Axis pitched in, both Asami and Korra looked at her. "I have my own business and I can help pay off the bills. Errr.. if… you know.. you're both okay with that idea. Takes off some weight from both your shoulders."
Korra gave Asami's hand a gentle squeeze. "That would be nice, thank you."
"Are you sure, Ax..? I mean… I know we… well.." a faint pink showed on Asami's otherwise pale cheeks when she thought about her last heat cycle. "But, we don't even know who the sire is."
Axis smiled warmly. "I know, but someone told me today that the past doesn't matter and I wanna do good in my future from now on." Axis explained and Korra grinned. "Anyway, I'll leave you two for now. I'm glad to know you're alright, Asami." She said and waved her goodbye before heading out the door.
"Well, she seems a lot nicer." Korra was the first to speak up when Axis left, once again pecking Asami's cheek.
"She does, yes. Compared to when I told her about the pup." Asami said and a yawn escaped her. "Oh, sorry about that…" She said but Korra only giggled.
"You sleep, I'll go home and get some clothes. I'll be back before you know it and I'll take something to eat with me too." She said and kissed her mate goodbye. "See you in a few."
Asami just smiled tiredly and leaned back against her pillows, enjoying the warmth and comfort of the bed. Even though she was in the hospital. "See you soon." She said and another yawn followed. It didn't take long before she fell asleep.
The days passed slowly now that she was stuck in bed for the remainder of her pregnancy. She still had about 5 months to go before the pup would be born, more than enough time for her and Korra to get everything done at home.
Thanks to Axis, Korra could go to work and leave her pregnant mate behind. The two alphas had become good friends over the passed few weeks. Truthfully, she was thankful for all the help and glad that Asami wasn't home alone constantly. Axis kept her busy, or more like, the other way around.
Korra remembered when she came home one day and all the furniture had been moved around. She looked around the living room and noticed how clean and tidy it was. Even the dishes were done. "Damn, I knew nesting was a thing.. but still." She said as she looked around the place. Asami's voice caught her attention.
'Yes, yes. A bit more to the right. Almost!" It was coming from the bedroom. What the hell..?
