Aziraphale got the word from the archangels that the first famine was coming to the land of Cannan. Abram and his wife Sara, as well as their friend Lot, were sent away from the land in order to avoid the food shortage.

Aziraphale was to go there and investigate and he can honestly say he was not expecting Famine to be a person.

The man was well dressed and had teeth as sharp as a jaguar. His skin was black as night and his black curls kept well. His eyes were filled with evil thoughts and Aziraphale could only imagine what he was thinking. He also suddenly felt like he was starving and angels didn't even need to eat. He flashed his sharp fangs at Aziraphale.

"Begone angel! For tonight the first Famine will settle across the land and there will be no power to stop me."

Aziraphale's heart sank knowing he was right. Heaven would be mad at him for interfering but there was one small thing he could do that didn't require his powers. He could be there for the people here. He wanted to be. He had grown to care and love the humans and he would not abandon them now.

Three months into the Famine the food had run out. Famine walked the streets with a proud smile on his face and sniffing the air and growling grunts of praise to himself. He was like a hungry dog waiting to strike.

Aziraphale was near a girl who was starving to death. Her face had been hallowed out and she was so malnourished she couldn't even stand up. He knew there was only one thing he could do so he sang for her. An angel's lullaby gives comfort to those in need and heals the anxiety.

He held her hand and sang gently:

This land is mine

God gave this land to me

This brave and ancient land to me

And when the morning sun

Reveals her hills and plains

Then I see a land

where children can run free.

So take my hand

And walk this land with me

And walk this lovely land with me

Tho' I am just a man

When you are by my side

With the help of God

I know I can be strong.

So take my hand

And walk this land with me

And walk this golden land with me.

Tho' I am just a man

When you are by my side

With the help of God

I know I can be strong.

To make this land our home

If I must fight

I'll fight to make this land our own.

Until I die this land is mine!

The girl smiled at this and her eyes began to close as she slipped into unconsciousness and eventually greeted Death. Azreal could not be detected by any angel or demon because she was of neither. This is why her wings are grey but she leans more towards angel than demon.

Therefore the little girl died a painless death because Aziraphale had given comfort to her in the final moments. Perhaps Azreal should have said something. But she was just like a wandering spirit. Lost without anywhere to go.
