It took a while for Lugnut to pick his jaw up off the floor again, but that was only because Lela had used Butchy's signature snap right in front of his ear. Finding out that this innocent little girl had ventured into enemy territory, was definitely not on Lugnut's to-do list for the day.
Once he had snapped back into it, Lugnut started rambling off questions he knew Butchy and Tanner would've asked her if they had known. "You went to the Sparx headquarters? And into Xander's office nonetheless! When? How?!"
"Not that long ago," Lela mumbled, feeling like she was going to get a thorough interrogation from her brother's best friend. "He had just locked up for the night when I got there and the key was right there, so I went in! Besides, that wasn't even all that I found. I found-"
"Hold up!" Lugnut interrupted, "How long did you stay in there?"
"Not too long." Lela shrugged before shifting things around in the milk crate and pulling out the absurdly overstuffed folder she had taken from Xander's desk. "Anyway, I found this in the back of his desk."
Lela shoved the file into Lugnut's hands, watching him open the file and stare at the cover page in furious horror. "Are yous for reals?"
"As real as you and I," Lela confirmed, nodding slightly. "What do we do with it?"
August 4th had been one of Giggles' favorite days. 'Had' being the operative word. That morning, Giggles was able to convince her parents that she was going to have a picnic on the beach with a group of friends from her school. In reality, she had taken a picnic basket and filled it with a blanket, some snacks, a small box, and a couple sheets of and told her parents she'd see them later in the afternoon before heading to a small cove not too far down the beach from her house. It was pretty much just a rock formation that had a sandy little cave inside it. The cove reminded her of the moon pool cave from the mermaid show Mick had showed her. It was peaceful, just the type of calm that she needed today.
Today would've been the anniversary of her and Butchy's relationship.
Today would be the day of her acceptance.
That afternoon, Juliet found herself wanting to spend some time getting to know the people she had been trying to take down not even a few weeks prior. While she stared at the mix of surfboards and motorcycles that were either shoved into the sand or parked nearby, she could feel the sense that she wouldn't be welcomed with open arms. Mick had probably told everyone that Juliet had been going out with Xander, so she was prepared to be called every name in the book.
Nothing new there; Juliet's relationship with Xander had always infuriated Hornet. Hornet was one of the girls that Xander had spent quite a bit of time with way before they moved to Florida. Juliet had met Xander while the Sparx had been located in her hometown back in Texas and, at the time, Xander had already grown close to the red haired girl. Not that she gave him much of a choice in the matter as she practically threw herself at him every chance she got. Once Juliet had taken up residence in Xander's heart, Hornet became a bit of a bitch; she had taken to calling Juliet every name in the book, especially when Xander wasn't around.
Facing a bunch of loud-mouthed, furious surfers and bikers would be nothing compared to the, almost four years of hatred she had been given from Hornet alone.
With a deep inhale to calm her nerves, Juliet started up the stairs and pushed her way through the front doors of Big Momma's. The atmosphere of the hangout was energetic; a mixed group of surfers and bikers shimmying to the sound of the Chubby Checkers' song, The Twist, while the rest of the regulars hung out and chatted at different booths.
Hesitantly, Juliet crossed the room, asking Big Momma for a milkshake. The older woman gave her a look. "So long as it doesn't get thrown this time, it's fine by me."
Juliet waited for her drink, tracing the stained wood patterns on the bar absentmindedly. Her mind had wandered into a rabbit hole, allowing herself to think of other things before she had to face reality again. Thoughts on how Xander was doing and what Hornet would do now that Juliet was gone, occupied her concentration enough for her not to notice the person behind her.
A sharp nail jabbed quickly into Juliet's spine, forcing the blonde to whip around, rubbing her back in the meantime. Out of all the people she expected to do such a thing, CheeChee was not the top of her list. The short biker girl was accompanied by her best friend, Struts, and Skids, Struts' twin brother.
"If yer here to harass Mick, she's already gone," Cheech began, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yeahs," Struts agreed. "She and Butchy went to visit Mick's parents."
Juliet shook her head, attempting to keep her cool. "I'm not here to start anything."
"Somehow, I don't believe you," Kiki spoke from
"Guys," Tanner spoke up as he joined the group. "Remember what Mick told us, she's not a bad person. She's apologized and we should respect that."
Skids took Struts by the elbow and dragged her over to Lugnut. CheeChee kept her gaze on Juliet for a moment before allowing Seacat to pull her to a table with Rascal, his brother Reef and Reef's friend, Lake. Juliet turned to Big Momma as the woman handed her a drink, quietly picking it up and crossing the room until she found a deserted booth. She took a deep drink of her milkshake, forcing herself to ignore the occasional skeptical stare from the groups that were mingling by the dancefloor.
Juliet felt the breeze from the ceiling fan blow her hair softly, allowing the air to relax her momentarily as she placed her handbag on the table. With a sharp inhale, she opened the bag and pulled out a stationary set and laid it out on the table. Juliet sprayed a spritz of her strawberry perfume onto the paper, just as she always did when writing letters.
With a last glance over the swarm of bikers and surfers, Juliet picked up her pen and started writing down the letter she was dreading the most.
'Dear Xander,'
Giggles had spread out the baby blue and pink checkered blanket at the highest point the sand would reach. The hole above the cove lit up the area around Giggles just enough for her to see what she was doing. She tucked the edges under some rocks so the blanket wouldn't move before sitting down and taking a few grapes from the basket she had brought. She pulled the papers and the small box from the basket, laying a piece of paper in front of her. She took her pen and tapped it on the edge of the paper a few times as she decided on what to say.
Giggles smiled sadly as she found the right words, pressing the pen to the paper as her other hand spread across the blanket under her.
'Dear Butchy,'
{Juliet}
You know I love you, boy. In every single way.
{Giggles}
Though I love you, boy, I'll miss you every day.
{Both}
Oh, I love you, boy.
{Juliet}
I wish that I could stay with you and keep the life I made with you.
{Giggles}
And even though this feels so right, I'm holding back the tears tonight.
{Both}
It's true I'll never be over you, 'cause I have built a future in my mind with you. And now the hope is gone; there's nothing left for me to do
You know it isn't true, but I must say to you;
{Juliet}
That I don't need your love, no, no.
{Giggles}
I don't need your love, no, no.
{Both}
It'll never be better than it was, no, no. But I don't need your love, no, no.
{Giggles}
I've got no choice. With Mick you won't be mine. Never had a choice. Was your girl once before, just to be deprived. I don't have a choice.
{Juliet}
If Xander says "It's you", then it's you. No matter how I feel, it's what I have to do.
{Both}
But if, somehow, I had that choice; no holding back, I'd raise my voice.
{Juliet}
I'd say, "Xander, yeah it's true, I'll never belong to you. 'Cause I am not your toy, to enjoy till there's something new. As if I'm gonna give up my joy, my heart, my dreams, to care for you."
"Ha, darling, get a clue."
{Giggles}
"There's nothing you can do."
{Both}
"I don't need your love, no, no."
{Giggles}
"No, I don't need you love, no, no."
{Juliet}
"There's nothing left to discuss, no, no."
{Giggles}
"But I don't need your love, no, no"
{Both}
But I can't say that. Not to my love. So, this is goodbye.
All my love,
{Juliet}
Your Lady
{Giggles}
Your Princess
With a deep breath, Giggles folded the paper, tucked it into an envelope, and wrote "To My Love" on the front. She placed the edge of the envelope under the edge of the small box she had brought. The blonde surfer pulled a small chain from around her neck and took a small key off of it. She opened the box using the key and pulled out two small rings, resting them in her palm so she could see them better. The sunlight shimmered over the golden bands, making the diamonds of one of the rings shimmer slightly.
She rose from her seat on the blanket, picked up the letter and shuffled slowly to the edge of the water. Giggles took a deep inhale, closing her eyes to gather her confidence. Sighing out the air she sucked in, she pressed a kiss to the envelope and threw the letter into the water as one would throw a frisbee, watching the crystalline waves lap over the paper and drag it back with it into the dark depths.
Giggles took another look at the rings in her hand, holding them to her chest one last time before pulling her arm back and throwing them as hard as she could. With a choked breath, Giggles made her way back to the blanket and sat down, allowing her emotions to come out as she slid onto her back and felt hot, salty tears slide down her cheeks.
"Goodbye, my Prince."
After a while of talking, debating as to what they should do with the information at hand, Lela and Lugnut decided to head for Big Momma's. They had settled on the idea of waiting for Mick and Butchy to return before bringing the folder to anyone else's attention. Lugnut gave Lela the folder and the piece for the machine, telling her to bring it home and hide it until the other couple returned from their vacation. Nobody else needed to be worried about such things.
Lugnut had the double date with Struts, Miles and Giggles in less than an hour and was more prepared for that than he ever was for school. He told Lela to wait outside while he changed for his date, allowing Sandy to play 20 questions with the raven haired girl. Once he reappeared in a grey button up with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, a pair of black dress pants and some dress shoes the girls had never seen him in, the girls knew he was ready.
Lugnut walked Lela to her house,
"So," Lela began as they walked toward Big Momma's, "where are you taking Struts?"
"Napoli's," Lugnut said, smiling softly. "She said she wanted to go there when it first opened, but it was during school, so I didn't bother asking."
Lela giggled, "Makes sense. Sherry's always busy during school. Between her social club and parties, she's always busy. But she makes time for all of us, too, so I don't think you have anything to worry about when school starts again, Larry. Anyway, how on earth did you get a reservation at Napoli's? It's always super busy there."
Lugnut looked down at the sand as they neared Big Momma's, smile still bright on his face. "Well, my uncle may or may not be the head chef there. I fixed up 'is truck a month ago, so 'e owed me."
"Pretty good favor!" Lela exclaimed. "I mean, if Tanner took me on a date to Napoli's, I'd flip my lid! It's gotta be expensive there, though? How are you handling that?"
"I had mentioned thinkin' of takin' Struts on a date when we were at the party the other night. B'fore they left, Butch and Mick threw me a hundred bucks to take her out somewhere nice and treat her to somethin' special, so that's what I'm gonna do." Lugnut tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans, confident that he was doing the right thing.
"That's so sweet," Lela giggled, twirling as she made her way up the front steps of Big Momma's. "Now, you stay here, and I'll go get your date. You can take her for a nice walk along the beach or something before you meet up with Giggles and Miles."
Lugnut waited outside, listening to the commotion coming from the hang out. He hoped he hadn't over-prepared. Struts deserved the best and that was what he wanted to give her. That was why he hadn't told that many people about the date. Well, mostly. It was also for the fact he didn't want any of their snooping friends to follow them around.
'Snoops, the whole load of them,' Lugnut thought to himself, shaking his head. 'Thing is, Miles and Skids'd be the ones to snoop the most, and one of 'em 's goin' with me!'
"Larry?" a soft voice called from behind him.
Lugnut turned to see Struts in a peach dress with flutter cap sleeves and black bow tied around her waist. Her hair was down in ringed curls with a silver heart clip pinned behind her ear. Her usual pink heels were replaced with a pair of slightly shorter, black ones. She smiled up at him as his eyes met hers.
"You look handsome," Struts complimented.
"Thank you." Lugnut smiled, taking her hand in his and pressing a kiss to the back of it. "You look incredible, Sherry."
"Thank you," Struts said softly, stepping down the stairs so she was next to him. "So, what do you wanna do before the date?"
"First, I wanted to give you this," Lugnut began, tugging a small, crushed velvet box from his back pocket.
He handed it to Struts and let her open it. Inside was a delicate, pink apple blossom with golden stamen coming out of it. With the lanterns glowing over them from the deck, the golden stamens glimmered beautifully. Struts delicately pulled the necklace from its case and held it up to Lugnut.
"It's beautiful, Larry. Could you help me put it on?" Struts asked, allowing him to take the small chain from her as she turned. Struts smiled as she watched the pink and gold object lower over her collarbones and rest lightly on her chest.
"Now," Lugnut started as Struts turned back to him with a smile, "How 'bout a stroll through the park before we head for dinner?"
Struts nodded, lacing her arm with Lugnut's and taking his hand in hers. "Sounds perfect."
