The ninth day of the plagues was ironically darkness. The sun was not out over Egypt that day. Not a single star hung in the sky. Crawly honestly preferred this over the awful hoarding of various pests and insects. They got in his hair which he liked to keep up without using miracles. Plus snakes had night vision so the sight wasn't a problem.
He walked past an alleyway before feeling an overwhelming presence of angelic forces. He looked and couldn't help but slip a quick smile upon his lips when he saw Aziraphale with a group of Egyptian kids around him.
He held a small light in his palm and had in dance upwards making a small little lamp. Kind of resembling the deadlights from IT. (ha I got that reference)
The children were scared but a small light in the darkness seemed to provide a small amount of comfort to the scared tykes. And that was what Aziraphale was in Crawly's mind. A light in the darkness. No matter what day he was having those soft curls, gentle blue eyes, soft puffy cheeks, and fussy voice could always make him feel better. Well as better as a demon from actual Hell could get.
He watched Aziraphale coon and comfort them and he was so gentle. It never ceased to amaze him how an angel could be this kind and this gentle. All the angels he had meet had a superiority complex and were aggressive and cold. While Aziraphale could act holier than thou at times he was still this gentle and softball of angelic energy who truely loved humanity and wanted what was best for them and wanted to do the right thing.
He smiled as he heard Aziraphale telling the children the story of the garden of Eden and Noah's ark. He watched the kid's eyes light up and gasp.
"Unicorns really?"
"A snake? Snakes are scary?"
"Wow! Forty days! The poop must have stunk really bad!"
"I want to ride a camel!"
His smile slowly disappeared remembering the reality of the situation as tonight many of these kids could be dead. He would never understand how someone as gentle as Aziraphale could have come from a place like Heaven. He was about to turn and make his exit when he heard one fo the children say something of interest to him.
"Mr. Aziraphale, could you sing us a song?"
Now that was something he had never heard. He rubbed his neck remembering that he lost his singing voice in the Fall. But angels have a perfect celestial pitch. This was something he had to hear.
Aziraphale yanked at the collar of his robes uncomfortably. He really only sang when people were in pain and dying. It was meant to calm down and bring comfort to all those in need.
But based on the current predicament they were in it seemed fitting. Aziraphale nodded with an of course, dear. He took in a breath and began to sing. Crawly swore the aura of Aziraphale flooded the entire alleyway. It was blue with such a deep sadness and guilt Crawly felt all the time. Oh, angel...
"The falling stars you wished upon
are cinders now and now they're gone.
Their residue festoons my fetid field.
Revealing husks of lovers past,
their shells are all that ever last-
I've taken everything that they've concealed.
Whoever told you life was fair?
Look around you everywhere, the cruelty of Nature is displayed.
Why the scorn? Why the surprise?
Everything that's born must die and it isn't I who made the world that way.
What wicked little twist of fate placed you here upon my plate?
Here where no one hears your cries?
Where was your God to steer you through?
Perhaps your God's forsaken you?
Otherwise, why lead you here to die?
MELT AWAY
I know the way how, I'll melt away now.
I know the way.
I'm feeling bliss now, dissolved to mist, how strangely I go away.
Now I finally know...
It's merely moments now,
moments now until your feeble flesh bends to my will-
and it will, so rest your weary head.
There'll be no pain, no pain at all,
as everything you are dissolves.
Your fate resolved upon my silky threads.
I know the way how, I'll melt away now,
I know the way.
I'm feeling bliss now, dissolved to mist, how strangely I go away.
Now I finally know..."
