In those days the Philistines gathered their forces to fight against Israel. Achish said to David, "You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army." David said, "Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do." Achish replied, "Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life."
"All right that's it. I get it. If you didn't want to hang out you could have just said. Didn't have to be an ass about it." Crawly snarled. Aziraphale didn't even look at him.
"I'm sorry that be this way but we are an angel and a demon. We aren't exactly friends now are we?"
Crawly knew this but what he couldn't understand was why his soul felt heavy about it.
"Yeah. Of course."
"Well, then we have no obligation to each other. Be on your way then. I wish you well."
"Shut up!"
Crawly had more important matters to deal with. He flew to Endor. They were kind and went about their lives. In fact, there was one little Greek girl who was thrown out of her home that was adopted by the people of Endor. They loved her. Her name was Artemis and to be quite frank Crawly had grown fond of her. She had a head full of black curls and enough energy to outshine the sun. Beautiful amber eyes and she never minded his. That was what he liked about the people of Endor. They weren't judgey. He liked that.
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.
The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. Saul then said to his attendants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her."
"There is one in Endor," they said.
When he arrived he was surprised to see Saul's men there. They were looking for a witch. The only witch in Endor and perhaps in the entire region. He stood behind the building he enjoyed getting drinks at and listened in and watched. He expected Saul to slaughter her without mercy. He wanted to do something about it because she was a genuinely good person. Sure her beliefs may have been crazy and something someone drunk would have come up with but still a good person. She took in Artemis after all and always treated him like family whenever he came into town. In fact when some of the townfolks came started throwing stones at him because of his eyes and he expected to be discorporated like last time she came out waving her hands and spouting curses. After that, he was tolerated by the people and even respected. He could get used to this. But it would be over now. He just hoped whatever Saul the sick son of a bitch was going to do to her he would do it quickly and as painlessly as possible. He forced himself to watch.
So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. "Consult a spirit for me," he said, "and bring up for me the one I name."
But the woman said to him, "Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?"
Saul swore to her by the Lord, "As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this."
This surprised him. He followed them from the shadows to get a closer look. Saul was on his last limbs more than Crawly thought if he was stooping to this level. This was low even for him.
Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?"
"Bring up Samuel," he said.
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"
The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?"
The woman said, "I see a ghostly figure coming up out of the earth."
"What does he look like?" he asked.
"An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"
"I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do."
Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? The Lord has done what She predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out Her fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines."
Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel's words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night.
Crawly didn't really feel pity for Saul because he was pretty pathetic but his sons were good people. Why did they have to suffer? Especially Jonathan. Oh fuck. Aziraphale was gonna lose it.
As he was watching Saul lose his Godforsaken mind he felt a tug on his robes. He looked down and smiled as he saw Artemis down at his legs.
"You came back. I knew you would."
"Oh, course pipsqueak. Did ya think I won't?"
"Nah. You pinky swore. And you're a good person so I knew you won't break it."
"Well I won't say I'm a good person but not boring."
"Naw. Those games you showed us were genius. It made me one of the most popular girls in the town."
"I think you did that on your own kid."
"I am excited for a trip me and the witch will be taking."
"Oh? Where?"
"I don't know. She was being all mysterious about it."
"Probably somewhere so fun you won't believe it."
"I will miss Endor though."
"Hey let me tell you something pipsqueak." He took off his snake pin. He could always mircle a new one. "Take this with you. You'll have a little piece of me and Endor with you whereever you go."
She looked at the pin with stars in her eyes and reminded Crawly an awful lot of Aziraphale when he told him about the Illiad and Odyssey while they watched David. She reached up and hugged him quickly then released him to put the pin on. Crawly was still not used to "loving" touches but he had to admit they felt nice. He often found himself wondering what it would be like with Aziraphale.
