"This hurts like a bitch," moans Roxanne, both hands gripping the rails of her hospital wing bed. "HANNAH! More potion PLEASE! This is so degrading…. C'mon!"
The pastel blue curtains around her bed scrunch at one side to reveal a mildly annoyed blonde woman in her mid-thirties, dressed in lime-coloured matron's robes. "Roxy, I already told you—"
"Don't call you 'Hannah' while you're working, yeah," she interrupts, "but c'mon, it's the fastest way to get your attention! And besides, 'Madame Abbott' makes you sound like you've got a stick up your arse—now can I please have more potion? My back is in fucking—"
"Language, Roxanne."
"—pain right now. And I can't feel my goddamn legs."
"I told you," she continues, "that's normal. It's going to feel like that for at least another week while your spine mends itself."
"Are we speaking the same language? This is my spine, Hannah! Please, more potion—please? Pretty please?
Hannah sighs, hands on her hips. "How much, from one to ten?"
"Thirteen."
"Roxanne—"
"Okay, okay, like a six, I've had worse, but it still hurts! I feel like I'm gonna shit myself, and I can't even move off the bed… C'mon, Hannah, just one more dose..."
She frowns at the young fifth year. "Half a dose. And then I'm cutting you off, hon."
Roxy lets out a relieved sigh. "My hero."
Her back does hurt—she hasn't had an injury this bad all year—but she knows Hannah can fix her up. She's got a nasty habit of getting injured while playing Quidditch, which may have something to do with her other not-so-great habit of harassing the other team until they try to knock her off her broomstick. She hasn't been counting, but it's only December, and she's already been to the hospital wing enough that she still has her clothes here, leftover from her last incident.
A storm of heels against wood interrupts her thoughts, and she lifts her head from her pillow (not without pain, obviously) to smile as the torrent of shoes approaches the hospital wing, accompanied by a chorus of excited voices. "Roxy!" one sings, and she can't help but grin. They're here. Finally.
She hears Hannah stop them at the entrance, giving some bullshit about her needing rest and being probably a little high (but Hannah uses the word 'confused') on Pain-Reducing Potion, but she's not about to let the matron turn them away. "C'mon, Hannah!" she hollers from her bed across the hospital wing. "Let 'em in!"
"Roxanne!" squeals another, and then the shoes are coming in her direction, despite Hannah's best protests.
Her curtains are thrown aside, and now she's face-to-face with five different girls with varying expressions on their faces, ties of every House, hair of every color and skin of every shade. Her family. Weasleys upon Weasleys, with a Longbottom thrown in the mix.
"Now say cheese!" says her cousin Dom, and she lifts her camera to get a snapshot of Roxanne in her hospital bed. "Cool. That's, like, the tenth one this year! It's going in the book."
She rolls her eyes. "Not the book…"
Molly whacks her arm. "Don't mock the book. That thing's sacred."
"Totally," Rose adds. "A Weasley masterpiece."
Lucy says, "We're gonna have that whole thing filled up by the time Lily graduates."
Dominique tosses the camera strap over her head and throws her arms around her—"Ow, ow, Dom, watch it!"—and the other girls follow suit—"That's probably enough hugging now—hey, ow, ow!"—with a crowd of warm embraces.
"Are you okay—"
"—and McGonagall said—"
"—after Fred decked that Hufflepuff kid—"
"—but I swear it wasn't me—"
"—kept saying he—"
"—and Louis told him not to—"
"—said you weren't gonna—"
"Hey!" she shouts, and they all shut up. "Merlin's beard, one at a time—I can barely hear anything through all your banter. What's the news?"
Dom, who's tying her red hair back into a ponytail, starts, "You remember the match yesterday?"
Roxanne snorts. "Of course I do—that Hufflepuff arsehole knocked me straight into the bleachers!" She was kind of glad she didn't remember much after that, as it must've been a hundred-foot drop through structured planks of wood, and she clearly broke something in her back as she fell, because now she can't even stand up without horrendous pain. "What about it? Did we win?"
Molly, the Keeper, clears her throat. "Well, you are the captain, and they were playing dirty, so the rest of the match went kinda berserk after they took you out like that."
She blinks. "Berserk? But we were only a couple minutes in!"
"Well, when Fred took over…"
"Whose bright idea was it for Fred to take the lead? I love him, but Merlin's saggy balls, I'd never put him in charge!"
Before they can continue, Hannah slides in between the group of girls with a tray holding a half-bottle of a red potion swirling with silver, plus a glass of water. Alice takes them both off the tray—"Sorry, Mum, we'll pipe down."—and sets them on the nightstand so Hannah can give them all half-frustrated glares before leaving.
"Yeah…" Molly continues, quieter than before. "Fred, 'cause he's your brother and an idiot, declared himself the new captain after, and he sort of…"
"...started a fight with the Hufflepuffs," finishes Lucy. "Right then and there."
Roxy takes the potion as they talk, tossing it to the back of her throat to avoid the horrid taste and downing a glass of water straight after. "Took out their Keeper," Rose chimes in, "straight through the goalpost! It was awesome. And then Dom went for their captain, rammed her straight into the ground, I swear to Merlin—"
"Oh my god—that was really violent! The speed—"
Dom's red hair swishes in its ponytail. "It was fantastic, Roxy, you should've seen it. That bitch never saw it coming, wanna see? " She starts fishing through her pockets.
Roxy lets out a loud laugh. "Merlin's balls, Dom, you're the most dangerous person I know."
"And you're the most annoying," she snaps back, poking her in the side until the injured girl laughs again. "Welcome to the family."
"And you took a picture, too? Dom!"
"Oh, don't look so outraged—Gramps would be so proud I managed that Undetectable Extension Charm on my uniform, plus that Waterproofing Spell! And look, here it is!" Pulling out a large photograph album, she points at one of her photos. It's mostly blurry, with streaks of scarlet red and gold and peach. "Awesome, yeah? Knocked her front teeth out, wanna see?"
From another section of the hospital wing, a girl's voice roars, "I'll knock yours out next match, you bitch!"
"I'm not afraid to hex you, Zeller! Try me, and I'll knock out the rest!" She shakes her head, sitting down at the edge of Roxanne's bed. "Fucking bitch. Planned that hit on you to win the game and they expect me to what, just walk away? Mum taught me better than that." From her bag, Dom pulls out a ragged teddy bear. "Anyway...here. I brought you your bear—Hannah told us you'd be sleeping here for at least three weeks."
"Fuck," Roxanne groans, taking the bear and hugging it to her chest. "Three weeks? Hannah didn't tell me that. Did you bring anything else?"
Dominique lifts the strap of her bag over her shoulder and drops it with a thunk onto the bed. "Undetectable Extension Charm, mate. I brought it all. Pajamas, toothbrush, tampons…" She sighs. "What would you people do without me?"
Molly chimes in, "Plus, the whole House packed you snacks, see?" The strong Keeper lifts a basket from underneath the bed that Roxy didn't even know was there.
"We all know hospital wing food's shit," Alice comments, "so we thought we'd help you out a little. Louis put some spices and stuff in there, too."
Roxy frowns. "Wait—where are the boys? Why aren't they here?" Only Fred and James were actually on the team, so they were the only ones who could've possibly gotten in trouble for fighting, but none of the others were here, either: Louis, Albus, and Hugo.
Lucy chuckles. "Molly forgot the best part."
"What's that?"
Dominique says, "The fight didn't end with the team."
She gasps, the drama turning her cheeks warm. "No way."
Dom gives that mischievous smile. "Yes way. After Fred took out the Keeper, he went for the stands. Me and you and Molly—we've got sense, you know, so we get if we keep it on the field, it's legal. No trouble. But Fred took personal offense to the family name, I guess, and decided to take it out on the captain's brother."
"Then it got messy," Alice adds, and Molly starts to laugh. "It was insane—the whole stands went absolutely mad! The Ravenclaws were stuck between the Gryffindors and the Hufflepuffs, trying not to get involved, but fists were thrown—"
"Spells were cast—"
"People were hexed—"
"It was a disaster," finishes Dom. "So half the school is on punishment for fighting. McGonagall gave the janitors paid leave for a month and is making anyone who fought, even the Ravenclaws, clean the castle instead. All the boys are busy doing that right now, but we" —she high-fives Molly— "lead by our brains, so we stayed out of it."
"No punishment?"
She and Molly shrug. "Nothing."
Roxanne nods her head. "Awesome."
The blonde matron of the hospital wing re-enters, squeezing between Lucy and Alice. "Alright, although I love you girls, I'm gonna have to let you all go now. I've already got one patient threatening to turn you into a snail, Miss Weasley." She looks pointedly at Dominique.
The seventeen-year-old flushes. "Sorry, Hannah."
"Mmhm," the woman responds. "Now, out, all of you! You can come back tomorrow, but let's try to lower the, hm, enthusiasm, shall we?"
Alice looks particularly flustered. A chorus of yes's respond to her.
"Good. Now, off to dinner, all of you. I'll see you tomorrow."
The girls linger for a little saying goodbye and wishing Roxanne well, before finally she is alone again and Hannah is by her bedside, taking the tray with the empty bottle of potion. Just as Hannah closes the curtains behind her, Roxy shouts, "Wait! Hannah!"
The curtains open and an exasperated, but slightly amused face peeks through. "Yes, Roxanne?"
She gives the woman her most charming smile. "Another pillow?"
The blonde woman rolls her eyes. "Has anyone ever told you that you're a thorn in their side?"
Her grin grows. "All the time."
The curtains close.
