Chapter 3
"What an adorable little sweet," Hermione cooed, rocking Adele Higgins gently from side to side.
"Will you sit down Granger, you'll drop her!" Malfoy over-protectively stood in front of the pair, holding his hands out from underneath, just in case Granger seemed incapable of carrying the precious gem he called niece.
"Calm down, she's asleep, nothing's going to happen."
"But your leg-"
"Is not going to trip me if I'm not moving." Malfoy looked down at the minuscule baby, his heart melting at the sight of the tiny nose, and tiny fingers that curled around the blanket. "The little bugger looks so peaceful." He caressed Adele's tiny chubby cheek, thinking of what a perfect specimen she was.
Hermione studied his reaction, "Here, you hold her." She leaned forward to transfer the baby into Malfoy's arms and sat on an armrest. He looked as giddy as a kid at Disney World for the first time.
"Granger! She opened her eyes!" Malfoy was now making cooing sounds, "Who's my little cheeky monkey, who is? That's right, it's wittle baby Adele!" He made to blow a raspberry when all hell broke loose.
Adele started to screech her lungs out.
"Oh no no no! Hushh, it's okay." "Try rocking her Malfoy!" "I'M ROCKING HER." "Not like tha-" "HELP ME GRANGER CASSIE WILL KILL ME."
The mother of the now three week old was upstairs, sleeping, and had called on her little brother as a last minute babysitting resort. Mr Higgins on the other hand was at work. Malfoy had asked Granger to come with him on a whim, considering that they had had a good evening a fortnight ago.
Hermione put her arms around Malfoy, forcing him to move slowly, and in tune to the nursery rhyme she was murmuring under her breath. The wails of Adele seemed to subside with each note, and soon Malfoy was singing too, more to calm himself than the baby. And then the baby threw up.
"Merlin... oh no no, this is a new shirt!"
Hermione couldn't help laughing. "Give Adele to me, you'll scare her." Almost instantly Draco turned serious. He slowly passed on his dear Adele to Hermione, and after making sure she was in safe hands, proceeded to unbutton his shirt with extreme disgust.
"Why does it smell so bad? I thought these pesky tots only drunk milk?" He turned frantically, looking for a place to dump the article of clothing before tossing it into the small hamper by the changing station, where Adele was now sporting a pink romper and a laugh. "There, all better now." Hermione kissed the tip of the baby's nose and pulled socks onto her feet, "No more throwing up on your uncle Draco." Adele gurgled in response.
Malfoy came up behind her. Turning around, she held on firmly to the precious child. "Thanks for today Malfoy." He only offered a small smile in return; eyes focused on Adele as her stroked her bald head. "Nah, thanks for being here Granger." He looked up at her, staring. He gently kissed her cheek before sneaking upstairs to find a shirt.
