"How do you know my name?"

"Um, because we saved you from the gigantic tower in St. Mystere."

"How do you know so much, who are you creeps."

"Listen, I know that this all seems confusing, but trust me, we're not here to harm you."

"No, get away from me, you weirdos," Flora shouts, pushing away Layton's arms.

Flora rushes down the hallway, flailing her arms from side to side.

"Come on, professor. We have to catch her."

"Now's not a good time, Luke. She seems genuinely confused about our presence. We know she's a part of the hotel's staff, so we have plenty of opportunities to explain ourselves to her later."

"Explain ourselves to her? But she knows everything she could possibly know about us."

"I know Luke, and I can't help but think that there's something fishy going on in this resort."

2nd Mystery - Flora's Disappearance Updated

About two years ago, Flora, the kind and gentle girl, seemingly vanished from existence. There were no records, no evidence, nothing that the police could use to find on her. Luke and Layton discovered her residing in the Arrow Zeppelin as a staff member. She doesn't bear any memories of our travels together. What sort of trickery is going on here?

Luke sits quietly on the sofa, contemplating the recent events that have just unfolded. There's an aura of uneasiness present in the well-polished room. Both boys are stubbornly enveloped in the same issue. "What's going on with Flora?"

Layton attempts to change the topic of discussion, centering their crazy puzzle minds on a different matter. "Luke, how does that bowtie feel, I could loosen it if you want."

"Yeah, it's... a... little tight."

Puzzle!

No. 005 Bowtie Blunders

This puzzle is worth 40/40 picarats. Subtract 5 if you get it wrong.

Luke can't stop fussing with his newly strapped bowtie. He keeps grabbing the collar and loosening the knot for oxygen. Layton suggests that Luke could wear one of his old bowties instead. Luke agrees with the professor's proposal but informs him of his picky tendencies.

Here is the list of requirements the bowtie must pass -

It must be blue.

No tiny circles.

It can't have any stripes going side to side, but lines going up and down are okay.

The fabric must be 36 inches long.

Option A = Azure, with vertical stripes, and 1-yard length

Option B = Turquoise, polka-dotted, and 36-inches length

Option C = Cyan, with horizontal lines, and 3-feet length

Option D = Chartreuse, with vertical stripes, and 3-feet length.

Option E = Cerulean, no stripes, and 1 foot length.

Use hints only if you're stuck. Skip to the end to see the results.

Hints:

1. No tiny circles mean no polka-dots.

2. Pay attention to the direction of the stripe. It's an easy detail to miss. Think horizon when it says horizontal lines, and then vertical will be obvious.

3. Remember that there are other variations of 36 inches. It's a pretty hefty tie, but 36 inches does translate to 3 feet. Three feet can also be interpreted as a yard measurement. I wonder which one it could be.

"I've really thought about this one."

A is CORRECT

"I knew I'd get it right," Luke cheers.

Good tie scouting. With your knowledge of colors, lines, and length, you'll make quick work of any fashion disasters that arise.

Luke also appreciates your help. Now he won't be continuously strangled by this additional piece of design.

"We still have thirty minutes before we have to head to our lunch appointment. I say we use this time to investigate this so-called Greek amulet."

"Do you think it holds magical powers?"

"I highly doubt the validity of some of these rumors. The ability of super strength and flight is a widespread desire amongst most fictional works. These powers were probably fabricated to increase notoriety for the item."

The two head for the newly opened museum and approach the glass display case containing the prized relic. The charm carries a light pink rose quartz surrounded by a radiant eight-pointed flower. Each petal of the herb bore a message, Wisdom, Integrity, Patience, Ambition, Fairness, Humility, Imagination, and Confidence.

"I must admit, it has quite the luster."

"Woah, it looks... costly."

"Indeed, I feel quite sorry for the janitor."

Puzzle!

No. 006 Polishing the Talisman

This puzzle is worth 40/40 picarats. Subtract 5 if you get it wrong.

Twelve beads accompany the precious charm. There is a heart shape gem between every third bead. Cleaning one bead takes thirty-seconds, and rubbing down a heart jewel that doesn't count as a bead can last upwards of a minute. When cleansing the lotus, each petal demands forty-five seconds of scrubbing.

What is the time it takes for the janitor to polish the set of rocks?

Use hints only if you're stuck. Skip to the end to see the results.

Hints:

1. This is an excellent puzzle to draw out; it will help you calculate the situation better and determine how many heart-shaped jewels there are.

2. Realize that the three hundred and sixty you get from multiplying thirty and twelve can be divided into minutes.

3. Remember that a lotus is an eight-petal flower, so that's eight times forty-five.

"That should do it."

Sixteen minutes is CORRECT.

"Every puzzle has an answer," Layton says, beaming with confidence.

Beautiful work. Almost as beautiful as the amulet itself.

A sizable metallic globe sits outside of the exhibition room, rotating on a small podium. It serves as a remarkable photo spot for guests to add to their album of memories. Layton uses an old-modeled camera to snap a quaint photo of Luke pretending to carry the massive spheroid.

"Look, professor, I'm on top of the world," Luke shouts from a nearby bench, taking advantage of the optical illusion.

"Haha, let's hope not, I wouldn't know how to get you down."

"Hmph, you two indulge in such childish practices. It truly makes me sick as a top of the line detective, to see this disgrace take place within my peripheral vision." The sharp nose man scoffs.

"And who might you be?"

"Tsk, my name is Inspector Hawk, and I demand you to keep out of my way during this critical investigation. You don't know how many valuable clues and data you're missing out on when the two of you are just lollygagging about, tsk," The lad draws his fingers from his trench coat and proceeds to make a clawing motion at the professor.

"I'm sorry if my behavior may have offended you, Inspector Hawk, but were just waiting for the dining hall to open. I assure you we would find nothing conclusive in the middle of the day with this many people around. Most jewelry thieves tend to strike at night or during late store hours to avoid being seen by the public."

"Nonsense, there's always room for examinations. And you frolicking through dandelion fields is not helping one bit."

"This is why we prevent you from joining our pristine guild of expert crime solvers, the Society of Detectives, or the SOD for short."

4th Mystery - Society of Detectives

A group of investigators that currently inhabits the main lobby of the Arrow Zeppelin's hotel. They discuss up and coming rumors, all the while sipping tea to classical music. The assembly seems to cast resentment towards the top-hatted gentlemen Layton for his plentiful amount of success.

"Ugh, it's Layton."

"What a show-off that guy is."

"Can we kick him out already? There's plenty of parachutes."

Layton hears all this criticism as he passes by the club of agents on his way to the dining chamber. Layton tries to ignore the threatening comments, but some of the quips do break through his emotional barrier.

"Don't fret, professor. They're just jealous of your accomplishments," Luke reaffirms.

"I'm fine, Luke. I just need a little bit of herbal tea to clear my weary head."

"Hmm, why don't you take these earplugs," Layton offers.

"Oh, to block out the hateful dialogue."

"That, and I'm starting to get an uneasy feeling when I hear the ship's music. It might be best for us to avoid listening to it regularly."

The pair enter a long maroon corridor populated with artistic embellishments, and magnificent paintings—each piece is more sumptuous than the last, and there are complimenting colors aplenty. At the end of the rectangular cabin sits two armed cavaliers. Their knight-like garb and bronze-tinted shields seem to be pulled directly from the medieval era. They block the entrance to the food pavilion with their long halberds.

Layton carefully approaches the set of paladins. "Excuse me, well-dressed guardians, if you were so kind as to let me and my partner move beyond your steel weaponry. I would be eternally grateful."

"Hey, you puny guy. How many puzzles have you solved?"

"Uh, that would be... six in total."

"Come back when you've completed ten. Then we'll let you pass, got it little scrub."

"Okay, we'll be right back," Layton confirms, escorting Luke away from the scene.

"What's wrong professor, I'm sure we could take those chumps."

"I wouldn't be so cocky, Luke. Judging by their impenetrable armor, they're not to be messed with. To not lose our limbs, our best course of action is to fulfill the guard's request."

"I don't know how we're going to uncover four more puzzles. I thought we were pretty thorough."

"Don't worry. I think I might have an idea."

5th Mystery - Movable Knights

How can these hulk-like beings move with such ease and grace? They seem lifeless and devoid of any human emotions. Are these warriors robotically controlled, or is there something more sinister going on here?

"Oh no, the troglodytes are back. I wonder what dumb garbage they're doing."

"Greetings, Inspector Hawk. I assume you still hold a poor opinion of me. Do you wish to compete in a battle of wits? It could finally determine who's the smarter gentleman."

"To best you, Layton, ha, you know I would never pass up the opportunity."

Puzzle!

No. 007 Battle of Wits (Bishop)

This puzzle is worth 40/40 picarats. Subtract 5 if you get it wrong.

You've just been dealt five cards. You can't see the cards, but the dealer reveals that they add up to a total of twenty-five. The number cards equal their respective number (Ex. Eight of diamonds = Eight points). Face cards such as the Jack, Queen, or King equal an even ten points. You also can't have two of the same card. You're allowed to turn over two of the cards, and you discover a two and an eight within the hand.

How many possible combinations can be made without knowing the other three cards?

Use hints only if you're stuck. Skip to the end to see the results.

Hints:

1. Aces are counted as one, and there are no zeros.

2. Face cards such as the ten, Jack, Queen, King are your friends. It's an easy ten points you can then add to an ace and a four.

3. Since you have access to the number five-card, think of all the patterns you can make to equal ten. Then add five to that combination. Also, don't forget that one and four add to five.

"My intuition should serve me well."

Seven different combos are CORRECT.

"A satisfying puzzle indeed," Layton gushes.

Here are the possible combos -

28375= 25

28Jack14= 25

28645= 25

28Queen14= 25

28195= 25

28King14= 25

281014= 25

"Ugh, it looks like I was short a combo, okay, you win. I despise your petty little brain teasers, Layton. I'm a detective for Pete's sake, not a fourth-grader.

"I think you'll find that puzzles can be a test of intellect as well. Why don't you give it another shot? I'm confident that you'll feel smarter by the end of it."

"Tsk, tsk, I'd rather shake your hand than participate in any more of your foolish hobbies. Count me out of it!"

"What are we going to do now, professor? Inspector Hawk has a burning vendetta for our short queries."

"I'm not sure, Luke. Maybe, we can try reasoning with those patrolmen. They might even have a puzzle or two they can bequeath to us."

"Hey, there's a lounge tucked in beneath the corridors. I wonder what cool puzzles we could find in there."

"That segment appears to be for VIP guests only, and I'm afraid we're not worthy of entering. I'm sure Baron could offer us a peek inside, but that would have to be after his lunch break."

Layton and Luke cautiously venture through the crimson gallery. The band of soldiers briefly raises their hatchets, curious as to the man's puzzle count. "How many now?"

"Seven"

"Not ten, why?"

"We can't find any more, could you grant us any?"

"NOT TEN, WHY?" The guard shouts, gripping his battle-ax.

"We have ten right here."

"Okay, let us see."

"YOU LIE! WE MUST PUNISH." The troops ready their tomahawks and sling them forward towards Layton.

"Unguard," Layton cries, whipping out an umbrella from the small plastic bin on the floor.

The two duke it out with a series of slashes and blows. Layton continually spins the water-blocking tool around his torso to increase the weapon's speed and accuracy. Luke equips his trusty slingshot and starts firing small pellets at the enemy. Layton opens the parasol, knocking his opponent off balance. He then uses the hook end of the umbrella to pull the templar's headpiece away from him. Layton holds the bumbershoot like a golf club and knocks the knight's helmet towards the other sentry.

"Come, Luke!" Layton yells, taking advantage of the guards being stunned.

Luke slides under the banneret's legs and rushes towards the wooden door. Closing the door barely stops the fast cleaver swing. Layton and Luke release a sigh of relief after reaching the other side of the door. A swarm of high-class diner staff greets their entry. They're promptly escorted to their seats and are awarded menus for their perilous journey.

"Hello, my name is Lydia, and I'll be your server." A black-haired vixen reports.

"Good afternoon, Lydia, how's your day going?"

"Oooh, it seems I'm in the presence of a well-refined gentleman. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Mr. Layton."

"Oh, you know who I am."

"How could I not? Everyone knows about the famous Professor Layton. And his cute assistant too," The woman says, pinching Luke's cheeks.

"I'm a massive fan of your work, I've read all about your mystery-solving escapades through the London Times."

"I'm flattered by your knowledge. I wish I knew as much about you, Lydia."

"Tee hee, you don't have to know anything about me. All you have to tell me is what you want to drink," She prompts, pulling out a pad and paper.

"I'll have a piping cup of Earl Grey."

"Uh, I'll have the same," Luke stutters.

"Okay, I'll have your drinks back before you can solve a puzzle."

"Let's test that theory."

No. 008 Sibling Showdown

This puzzle is worth 30/30 picarats. Subtract 5 if you get it wrong.

A family of six buys a chocolate cake for a special occasion. Four of the children fight over who gets the biggest slice. In the middle of the night, when their parents are asleep. The siblings take as follows -

The big brother consumes one-fourth of the cake.

The little sister takes a quarter of her big brother's portion.

The big sister eats 2/16

The little brother eats twice as much as his big sister, and four times as much as his little sister.

How much cake is left?

Use hints only if you're stuck. Skip to the end to see the results.

Hints:

1. The whole cake is made up of sixteen slices. When you cut the cake in half, there are eight slices on each side.

2. If the older brother took 4/16, then a quarter of that would be 1/16.

3. To figure out how much the little brother eats: Multiply the amount the little sister eats by four and the amount the big sister eats by two.

Well, here's my guess.

5/16 or 5 slices is CORRECT

Professor, I've solved it!

Yum, tasty. Unfortunately, the parents don't think that catching their kids snacking at this ungodly hour is the least bit appetizing.

"See huff* I'm back huff puff* before you finished."

"Thank you, Lydia, that cup of Earl Grey looks simply delightful. Even if there are some little droplets on the floor."

"Your very much welcome professor, I added a few touches to make the brew the best it could be."

Layton takes a gentle sip of the hot beverage.

"I'll let you boys enjoy your tea," Lydia says, backing away from the Englishmen.

"I think now would be a good time to review the facts of the case."

"Good job keeping track of the story, Luke. Now I'm positive you weren't just dozing off during our adventure."

"Of course, Professor, Layton's apprentice can't be slacking on the job. I've also been gathering notes on Flora, hoping to put an end to this mystery. What she looks like, her favorite food, where she's located..."

"Could you perhaps have a small crush on our floral loving friend. I'm sure she would find your bowtie most dashing."

"A crush, I uh... um, that's preposterous, Layton's apprentice can't be falling for a girl with golden irises and luscious lips. No, I won't allow it."

"Okay, Luke, but I wouldn't get ahead of yourself. Flora doesn't remember a lick of information about us."

"I'm sure she does. She probably needs a quick refresher, maybe a review of the facts."

"I wonder if she has any relation to Aphrodite's Amulet. That rare trinket raises just as many questions as our situation with Flora does."

Layton grabs three empty glasses from a side table and places a rolled-up red napkin in one of the cups. He proceeds to shuffle the collection of drinks, right before Luke.

Layton then prompts Luke to choose a glass. Luke can see the red napkin underneath the middle cup and chooses accordingly.

Good, now let's try something different. Imagine the amulet to be the red napkin. Layton rips the claret brochure into three pieces and places them each into a jar, hiding the cloth behind a layer of red. He rearranges the jugs once more, this time with more vigor.

He asks Luke to choose a glass.
