Anakin's vision blurred in and out of focus as Ovota raised the lightsaber. He tried to move, but his limbs felt unbearably heavy. He couldn't think straight, couldn't form a coherent thought. All he knew was that he was afraid and that he didn't want to die. Jedi aren't afraid! The thought disappeared as soon as it had come, and as Ovota began to move the weapon down, Anakin forgot it entirely.
He felt like a scared kid again, the same one that would go running to his master when he had a bad dream. So, like that child, he reached out; desperate for any comfort he could get. Obi-Wan! He called out. However, instead of the familiar feeling of his training bond, there was only emptiness. Instead of the calm, deep blue waters of the force, there was only a white, foggy emptiness. The lightsaber was barely a foot away from him now, and he felt a flash of panic. This was how he was going to die; alone, scared, and without even the force to comfort him. Would he still become one with the force when he died, or would he linger for all eternity in this blank, foggy abyss?
A blue lightsaber appeared inches from his nose, blocking Ovota's strike. Anakin blinked sluggishly, squinting his eyes against the blinding light. Master? He thought.
"Ahsoka," Ovota growled. Anakin's hearing wasn't working right, and he could barely make out what Ovota was saying. Snips, He thought, relief washing over him. Ahsoka pushed away Ovota's saber and he stepped back. Ahsoka moved in front of Anakin, obscuring his view of Ovota.
Ahsoka said something, but Anakin couldn't tell what it was. Suddenly, her lightsabers flew out of her hands and attached themselves to the wall by Anakin's feet.
"...trusted…" Anakin tried to make out what Ahsoka said, but all of her words blended together.
She used the force and flung Anakin's lightsaber out of Ovota's hands. It hit the magnetic wall and stuck there.
Ahsoka ran towards Ovota, allowing Anakin to see the boy again. In his hand, he clutched another syringe.
Ahsoka swung her arm horizontally, aiming for his head. Ovota ducked and aimed a punch at her stomach. She blocked the strike and swung at his torso. He used the same tactic that he had used on Anakin, ducking out of the way and using Ahsoka's power against her. He aimed the hand with the syringe toward her exposed neck.
Ahsoka was faster than him, however, and swept his legs out from under him with a kick. The syringe clattered to the floor and Ahsoka crushed it under her boot.
Ovota yelled something and scrambled to his feet, lunging towards Ahsoka. She punched him in the stomach and he stumbled backward.
She turned and began quickly pressing buttons on the console. Ovota took advantage of her distraction and aimed a solid strike at her side. Her knees buckled and she fell to the ground, her back against the bottom of the console. She tried to kick Ovotas legs but he dodged her attack and swung his foot back, aiming a kick at her face. Ahsoka pushed him back with the force and reached up, her fingers barely reaching a small button near the top. She pressed it and Anakin fell to the floor, his cheek hitting the ground hard. He watched as Ovota ran towards her, his eyes ablaze. Ahsoka reached her hand out and her lightsabers flew into her hands. She ignited them and Ovota stopped in his tracks, running back to where Anakin lay. He reached down and grabbed Anakin's lightsaber, holding the hilt against his back, standing over him.
"...move…..he's dead," Anakin made out. Ahsoka stood still, an unreadable expression on her face.
Anakin called upon every last shred of strength inside of him and moved, his limbs screaming at the effort. He grabbed Ovota's ankle and pulled, the boy falling to the ground beside him. Anakin's lightsaber rolled in the opposite direction.
Ahsoka approached Ovota slowly, backing him into the corner. Anakin watched as she pointed her lightsaber at the villain's face and said something. In Ovota's hand, he clutched a small object. It seemed to be a button, but it wasn't connected to anything. Anakin tried to call out and warn Ahsoka, but the words refused to form.
Ovota smirked at Ahsoka and pressed the button.
Anakin barely heard the pop that sounded as one of Ovota's eyes rolled back in his head and he fell forward, dead.
Ahsoka stood there in shock for a few moments before deactivating her lightsabers and running to Anakin's side. She rolled him onto his back, looking down at him worriedly.
"Master," Anakin heard her say. "Stay with me, alright?" He tried to hold on to the sound of her voice, but his vision began to disappear as the white fog overtook him. His hearing disappeared entirely and he forgot what he was trying to do. Anakin closed his eyes, allowing his consciousness to drift away.
Anakin's eyes fluttered open and he looked around, confused. He was in a room made out of pale stone with light streaming in from a window to Anakin's left. Ahsoka sat at the foot of his bed, looking out of the window.
Suddenly, everything came back to Anakin and he sat forward, the tranquility of the moment gone.
Ahsoka looked over at him and got out of her chair, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm glad you're awake," She said. "Do you remember anything?"
"Yeah," he said. "I think I remember everything."
"We destroyed all of the droids," She informed him. "You've been out for a couple of days. They sent the troops back to Coruscant already." Ahsoka smirked. "Padme called yesterday. She was worried sick."
"Oh," Anakin said, looking down.
When Ahsoka had been a padawan, Anakin felt like it was up to him to preserve the image of a perfect Jedi for her. He always felt like he couldn't burden her with the knowledge of his marriage because he didn't want to make her choose between her loyalties to the Jedi and her loyalties to him. However, now that she wasn't a Jedi, Anakin supposed that there wasn't any reason not to tell her.
"I have something that I need to tell you," He said cautiously.
"I'm all ears," She said.
"I'm… we'll I'm sort of," He looked up at her guiltily. "Padme and I, we're..." Ahsoka looked at him expectantly. "Married?" He said, his breath catching in his throat.
Ahsoka's expression was unreadable for a moment, and then she burst out laughing.
Anakin glared at her. "What's so funny?"
"That you thought I didn't know," She shook her head. "Really, Anakin, you're a horrible liar."
"You knew?" He asked, shocked. "This whole time?"
"I didn't know that you two are married, but I knew that you were together." She giggled at his surprise. "Obi-Wan knows too."
Anakin's heart nearly stopped. "What?" He asked.
Obi-Wan was a council member. He had dedicated his entire life to the Jedi Order, and there was no way that he would throw that away for anybody. If Obi-Wan knew, then it was only a matter of time before he told the council, and they would expel him from the order. Or worse, separate him and Padme.
"Relax, Skyguy. Your secret's safe with us." Anakin breathed a sigh of relief. "You underestimate Master Kenobi. He would never betray you like that."
"I was just afraid. I don't want to imagine what would happen if the Council found out."
"I understand," she said. But just so you know, you can trust me and Obi-Wan. Promise."
Anakin smiled at her. "Thanks," he said. Then, his smile disappeared. "But now that the mission's over, I'll be leaving soon, won't I?"
"Yeah," Ahsoka sighed sadly.
"You know," Anakin said, gazing out of the window. "I used to have this dream." He chuckled humorlessly. "It was a crazy dream, but I always held on to it. I thought that maybe, when the war was over, Padme and I could have kids. I know that's ridiculous, but I've always wanted it. Rex would be the crazy uncle, Obi-Wan would train one of them if they were force sensitive. You could babysit when they're young." Anakin trailed off. But that's just never going to happen." He looked at Ahsoka forlornly. "I'm a Jedi, and Padme's a Senator. You would be on the other side of the galaxy. And that's assuming that we all survive the war. It's impossible."
"Well," Ahsoka smiled, "I'm not so sure about that. I definitely want to stay with my parents for a little while, but when I turn 18, I was thinking about moving back to Coruscant."
Anakin grinned. "Really?"
"Yeah," she said. "And I don't know how we'll deal with the council, but we can figure that out when it happens. Maybe your dream isn't so crazy, after all."
Anakin pulled her into a hug. "Thanks, Snips."
"Anytime, Master."
Anakin stood facing Ahsoka, the Twilight behind him. Sulo and Coraa stood a few yards away, looking a little worse for wear.
"I'm going to miss you," Ahsoka said, her voice thick.
"You'd better call me," He responded.
"You'd better visit."
She reached up and hugged Anakin tightly. He hugged her back, breathing in slowly. Raala bark. Anakin cherished the scent, knowing that it wouldn't be long until he smelled it again. "I'm really proud of you," He said softly.
He pulled away gently, smiling. "See you around, Snips." He let his hand linger on her shoulder.
She laughed softly. "See you." Anakin stepped away.
"Take care, Anakin," Coraa called.
"You too," he said. He turned and walked up the ramp of the Twilight. He turned and looked at Ahsoka as the ramp began to close, maintaining eye contact with her until it had closed entirely.
He walked towards the cockpit, looking back at all of the fond memories he and Ahsoka had had on this ship. A week ago, these memories would have stung. Now, he couldn't help but smile.
He walked into the cockpit. Obi-Wan turned around in his chair, stroking his beard.
"You're late," He said, smirking.
"Aren't I always?" Anakin sat down in his chair and turned on the Twilight, enjoying the familiar hum of the engine.
"Indeed you are, Anakin. Indeed you are."
The Twilight lifted off of the ground and began to ascend. Anakin smiled as they left Shili, hopeful about the future. He was going to go home and see his wife. Then, he was going to tell Obi-Wan everything. When that was done, he was going to call Ahsoka and tell her how it went. And, in a few years, maybe his dream could come true after all.
It's done!
