Ginny was busy with one of her brother brooms before someone tapped her on the shoulder. "Ginny!" She turned around to find Luna standing behind her. "Hi." Ginny managed to say, after a short pause. "Guess what day it is?" Luna asked happily.

Ginny wracked her brains, frowning. Valentine's day was tomorrow, that all she knew. Then... "OH! It's your birthday..." She mumbled, remembering regretfully that she hadn't gotten Luna a present or even a card.

"Yes! Daddy said he's going to help me find some dirigible plums for some new jewellery, but..." Luna trailed off, her jubilant smile fading away. "But what?" Ginny asked, hoping it might give her an idea for a present.

"I want to have earrings, but look." She pulled her long curls away so that her ears were exposed. "What?" Ginny asked, not sure of what she was supposed to be looking at.

"My ears don't have holes to put the earrings in. And a dirigible plum necklace is bad luck!" Luna explained.

"Oh..." Ginny got an idea. "What if I pierced your ears for you?" She asked. Luna looked delighted but then unsure.

"Do you know how to?" She asked.

"Of course! I've done Bill's ear!" That was a lie but she wanted to give Luna a proper grown-up present. She was nine that year, after all.

Luna slowly nodded, a smile growing on her face. "Okay, thank you!" She threw her arms around Ginny who smiled.

"Okay, so sit on my bed, okay?" Ginny ordered. Luna nodded and did as she was told. Ginny went downstairs and started looking for the things to pierce Luna's ears with. How hard could it be? It was just a hole in your ear, after all, it seemed easy.

"Mum?" Ginny went into the living room and almost tripped over Jellybean the cat. "Jellybean! You scared me!" She cried, laughing as she picked the cat up. "Yes, Ginny?" Molly looked up from her knitting and sat up.

"Where are the needles?" Ginny asked. Molly narrowed her eyes.

"Why?" She asked. Ginny thought for a moment. She knew her mother would never agree to allow her to pierce Luna's ears, so she needed to think of a good story.

"I wanted to try embroidery, you know, Dad got me that book on it, I need a needle." She said. Molly nodded.

"It's in the drawer here." She patted a drawer next to her and Ginny delved into it and quickly found a perfect needle.

"Thank you, Mum! I love you!" She said, putting the needle to the side and throwing her arms around her mother who smiled and patted her back. "Just show me your creation when you're done, I'd love to see it." She said.

Ginny nodded and went upstairs and started rummaging for a candle and match and brought them to her room where Luna was waiting patiently.

She set them down next to her bed. "I just need one last thing and then we can start." She said, before going back downstairs and stealing a few ice cubes from the fridge.

She went back upstairs with the ice cubes and closed the door to her bedroom. "Ready?" She asked. Luna nodded, looking very excited. "Hold these on your ears." She said, handing the ice cubes to Luna.

Luna took the ice cubes and did as she was told, squeaking at the coldness. "For how long exactly?" She asked.

"Until your ears feel numb," Ginny said.

"Will it hurt?" Luna asked nervously, looking at the needle warily.

"Just for a second." Ginny was getting just as nervous as Luna, but she wasn't going to admit that.

"O-okay." Luna nodded, enduring the coldness but seriously liking the idea of pierced ears less and less. After about five minutes, the ice cubes had melted and Ginny was sure that Luna was ready. She got a book and placed it behind Luna's ear and inserted the needle.

Luna let out a sharp scream and jumped away. "Y-you said it wouldn't hurt!" She whispered with tears filling her protuberant eyes, making Ginny feel like the worst person in the world.

"At least that's one piercing done?" She offered, trying to comfort her, trying to ignore the thin trickle of blood coming from Luna's ear. Luna nodded, sniffling.

"Just one more, Luna, then we're done," Ginny promised. Luna nodded again, taking a deep breath. Ginny did the same treatment, but she tried to make it quicker so Luna didn't have to endure it for too long.

This proved to be the wrong move as Luna squealed louder and jumped away from Ginny. Blood trickled down the sides of Luna's face as she started to cry. "Ginny?! Luna?!" Molly ran up the stairs and burst into the room.

"I thought you were doing embroidery!"

A few weeks later, when Ginny was finally somewhat ungrounded, she met Luna wearing a brand-new pair of dirigible plum earrings and a big smile on her face. "Your ears are okay, aren't they?" Ginny asked nervously. She still felt terrible for what she had done.

"They're okay, look! I have the earrings now!" She said happily. "But seriously, I don't think I'd do it again!"
