Maka and I made our way down the hall, discussing our plan for finding the Kishin. "So our best option is to wait until nightfall to hunt this bastard, right?" "That's right. It would only make sense. Lord Death said it chooses to attack at night. I'll use my Soul Perception to sniff it out." I licked my lips, eager to devour the Kishin's soul. Just thinking about it made me start salivating. I stopped, having remembered something. "Hey, you didn't forget about your medicine, did you? You still gotta take your dose for the day." Maka quit walking as well and rubbed her head. "Oops...it slipped my mind. I guess my brain's been preoccupied with other stuff." She started twisting a lock of hair around her finger. I grabbed her free hand and began tugging her after me. "S-Soul! What are you doing?!" "We're going home," I answered casually. "What? Why? We still have another class!" I looked back at her and saw that her face was tinged pink. "So that you can take your medicine. Plus we don't really need to go back to class anyway. We can go ahead and prepare to hunt this Kishin." She pouted. "You know I don't like skipping class," she stated. I rolled my eyes. "It won't hurt to do it this time." She only huffed in response, still pink in the face. She was so adorable and she didn't even realize it. I exhaled softly and turned back around to hide the blush that started to stain my own cheeks.
Shortly after we made it home, I shoved a glass of blue liquid at Maka's face. "Drink it." She frowned and reluctantly took it from me. "It's disgusting," she whined. "Drink. It." I crossed my arms. "Ugh. Fiiiine." She turned the glass up and slowly drank the liquid, clenching and unclenching her fist in the process. After she finished, she sat the glass on the counter. I grinned at her. "There you go. Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" She glared at me. "You don't have to drink that crap, so of course you'd say that." She wiped her mouth and was silent for a moment. "Um, Soul," she began hesitantly. I unfolded my arms. "Yeah?" She looked down and started playing with the bottom of her skirt. "Why did you kiss me yesterday?" She spoke so quietly that I almost didn't hear her. I was caught off guard by the question, though I should've been expecting it to be brought up sooner or later. "...I dunno. I guess it's because I...wanted to." She paused and focused her full attention on me. "You wanted to?" I nodded. "I-I don't understand. Why would you want to? How could you even think of doing that with someone like me," she asked, sounding unconvinced. "I mean, why wouldn't I want to," I replied, stepping closer to her and cupping her face in my hands. Her breath hitched and she jumped slightly, like she wasn't used to physical contact. I gazed deeply into her green orbs. "S-Soul..." She had barely uttered my name when we heard a throat being cleared. "Am I interrupting something?" We both let out a surprised scream.
Sitting on the table staring at us intrigued was Blair. She was in her cat form. Maka and I separated quickly, both of us blushing madly. We hadn't even noticed her come in the room. Blair had her head cocked to the side. "Whatcha guys doin'?" "Nothing," we blurted out simultaneously. She hopped off the table. "Suuure. Well I'm not gonna pressure you two about it." She transformed into her human form. "I'm going out. See you guys later. Don't wait up for me." She winked and was out the door in a flash. Maka and I stood there for about another minute, looking anywhere else but at each other. She was the first to break the silence. "I'm gonna go do some homework until it's time for us to start hunting." "Okay." I watched her walk out of the kitchen before I face palmed. "What the hell," I muttered. I almost did it. I almost kissed her again. Stupid Blair, I thought sourly. I peered out the window, noting that it was still light out. I had no idea what to do in my spare time, so I decided to take a nap on the couch.
Some time later, I felt myself being shaken. I opened my eyes to see Maka staring back at me with a serious expression. "Get up. It's time," she said. I let out a yawn and stretched before standing up. "Geez, already? How long was I asleep?" "About two hours." I blinked slowly. "Two whole hours? Seriously?" I noticed her hair was now back in pigtails. She nodded. "Yep. While you were napping, I was studying." That didn't surprise me. I figured she'd do something school related in the meantime. Still, it felt like I had only been asleep for twenty minutes. Guess I was more tired than I thought. It made sense, considering the fact that I hadn't been getting much sleep the past couple of days. Maka adjusted her trench coat. "Come on. There's no time to lose," she stated. I gave her a quick nod and within seconds, we were out the door.
A short while later, we found ourselves on the outskirts of Death City. Maka was standing perfectly still, eyes closed. A light breeze playfully brushed her hair against her cheek. She remained unbothered by it, focusing intensely on using her Soul Perception. Only a minute passed when her eyes shot open and she whirled around. "It's on the move," she announced. "Damn, already? Sure ain't wasting any time," I replied, pushing myself off of the wall I had been leaning on. "That's why we can't waste any either. Come on Soul!" Without hesitating, I took Maka's hand and transformed. She held me firmly and leapt onto a rooftop. "I hope you're ready," she said. "I was born ready," was my reply. She took off running at a steady pace, careful not to use up too much unnecessary stamina.
For a few seconds, everything around us was quiet. The only thing I heard was Maka's steady breathing and the sound of her footsteps. All of a sudden, she skidded to a stop and hopped onto a neighboring rooftop. Her grip around me tightened and she crouched. This caused me to become more alert. "It's just below us," she breathed. She silently observed the Kishin and as each second passed, she grew more and more tense. I was about to speak when moments later, a dark object flew at us. "Dammit!" Maka exclaimed and swiftly dodged it. "What's wrong?" She straightened up, holding me so that my scythe was facing the ground. "Looks like it found us instead."
