Hey again, everyone! I hope y'all are staying safe during this pandemic and remembering to wash your hands (even though we should all have enough sense to do that anyway without being told). By the way if you guys haven't already seen it, I'm working on some new fanfiction for Inuyasha. Also, don't be shy! Feel free to leave a review or shoot me a message. I honestly appreciate them. As usual, I hope you guys enjoy!
Standing right in front of us was a dog with mangled, jet black fur and blood red eyes. It possessed extremely long and sharp fangs with drool and blood dripping from its jaws. Maka furrowed her brows. "It's...a dog?" It suddenly lunged again. Maka evaded it almost effortlessly. "Looks more like a hellhound to me. Still, why would it take that weak ass form to attack us," I asked. As soon as I got those words out of my mouth, it morphed into a larger and even more ferocious looking wolf. Maka narrowed her eyes at me. "Thanks, Soul," she remarked sarcastically. "Th-that wasn't my fault!" With its head low, it charged at Maka once more. She swung and the Kishin leapt away right before my scythe made contact. It let out a vicious growl and sprinted in the opposite direction, jumping from rooftop to rooftop. "Hey, get back here," Maka yelled, chasing after it. "Geez, running away with your tail tucked between your legs already? How lame," I said. "I doubt it's retreating already, Soul. It must be planning something."
Without warning, the Kishin spun around and snapped at Maka. The move caught her off guard a little, but she managed to block it in the nick of time. She gave the bastard a mighty kick in the face and flipped backwards. "See, I knew it was about to do something!" She got in a defensive stance. "Still, something seems off. I noticed this earlier when I used my Soul Perception. It's like-" Before she could finish, a second dark shape flew out from an alleyway close by and slammed into Maka. She let out a grunt and went flying into the ground. "Are you alright," I asked worriedly. "Y-yeah," she said, pushing herself off the ground. I glanced around. "What the hell was that just now?" The Kishin jumped down from the roof, eyes boring into us. The other shape stepped into view, as if answering my question. "No way…" We were looking at another Kishin. In fact, it was an exact replica of the one we were dealing with.
I could feel Maka trembling slightly. "What's the matter," I questioned. "That's why its soul looked so strange… It's not even whole. It's split in half," she said quietly. "I've never seen anything like it." Both Kishins emitted a growl, which then turned into a low chuckle. "Truly a sight to behold, isn't it," the creatures asked in raspy voices. They slowly began circling us, their eyes never leaving us for a second. Maka gripped me tightly, her guard completely up. "There's no telling what they're about to do," she murmured to me. Almost immediately, both Kishins sprang at her from different directions.
Maka jumped into the air, narrowly escaping their grisly claws. "Soul, you ready?" "Hell yeah." She landed on a rooftop. "Let's go, Soul Resonance," we shouted in unison. However, instead of feeling our wavelengths combining with one another, we felt them do the opposite. "Oww," yelped Maka as she dropped me. "What happened," I asked, although I already had an idea as to what it was. "Your staff...it burned me." She was staring down at her hands, her eyes swimming with disbelief. "I don't understand. Why can't we resonate?" "I don't know." At first I really didn't have a clue as to why. Then, the answer hit me like a sack of books. "The medicine! It's the medicine, Maka!" I transformed back into my human form and grabbed her shoulders. "Stein said it could have side effects. Messing up our wavelengths is probably one of them, so-" I then froze as I recalled another unfortunate side effect. Maka only stared at me with weary eyes. Oh no. This can't be happening. I frantically shook her. "Hey! Maka, don't give in. You've gotta fight it," I cried. I watched in horror as her eyes grew heavier and heavier until she fell asleep. "Dammit!"
At that moment, both Kishins hopped onto the roof, staring menacingly at me. "Not much of a threat now, are you," asked one. I gritted my teeth and glared at them. "I won't let you touch her," I growled, putting myself in front of Maka. It's true that I'm not as effective fighting alone. But I don't have much of a choice right now. I have to do this by myself. The Kishins suddenly transformed. One turned into a giant, black and gray axe while the other one became a tall male with dark hair and fair skin. He had long, sharp claws instead of nails. He wore a charcoal gray cloak that sported a few holes. His eyes remained an ominous, bloody red.
When he spoke this time, his voice wasn't raspy. "Foolish boy. Do you really believe you can take me on by yourself?" He held the axe with a single hand over one shoulder. "Please. You really don't expect me to be scared, do you," I replied, readying myself for an attack. He chuckled. "You're pretty overconfident for someone who's at a total disadvantage." The Kishin swung his axe. I quickly deflected it with my arm, which was now a blade. "By the way, I haven't properly introduced myself. My name is Byakuya. Remember that name, as I will be the one to slaughter you both and eat your souls!" He took another swing at me. I scoffed. "I don't give a damn who you are. All I care about is ending you!" I blocked it, but was thrown back a couple feet due to the force behind it. Although I managed to land on my feet, I was no longer by Maka. She was easy prey now.
Byakuya started walking towards her grinning, displaying a mouthful of long, pointed teeth. "Stay away from her," I yelled as I ran at him and swung my scythe arm. "As if I'd actually listen to you," he said, easily blocking my attack. He punched me dead in the gut, making me spit out blood and knocking all of the wind out of me. I crumpled to the ground, holding my stomach. Byakuya grabbed Maka by her throat and lifted her up. "How exactly should I kill your precious little meister?" He paused, peering at her closely. "She's sleeping? Well, I could torture her awake instead and make her suffer while you watch helplessly. How's that sound?" He traced a claw down her cheek, drawing a thin line of blood. "M-Maka," I called out weakly.
Without warning, Byakuya released his grip on Maka and held his shoulder. "What the hell?!" Blood stained his cloak. I could only stare in disbelief as Maka stood there, scythes protruding from both of her arms. Her bangs hid her eyes. "Maka?" She didn't react to my voice. What exactly is going on? Why does she have blades coming out of her? Don't tell me… The realization suddenly hit me. My meister was actually a weapon, and she never even told me.
