The weather turned colder as Stefan and Serana made their way further North to Winterhold. They had passed a small fort that was usually occupied by hostile mages but now was home to several Imperial soldiers. They cantered past the building and up a small incline towards the final path to the town. Serana turned to look at the view on her right hand side. On a clear day, she could see the sea. Today however, was not a clear day. A blizzard ripped through the air, blinding them in freezing snow.
They cantered along the stone path. In the distance, the monstrosity of the college hoved into view. It's large black turrets stuck out amongst the sea of white around them. Up ahead, the small town of Winterhold made itself known. The ruined houses could be seen as they approached it. Stefan slowed his horse to a stop outside the marble pathway.
He dismounted his horse and tied her to a wooden railing as Serana dismounted. Serana landed with a crunch on the snow and looked up at the college.
"We're here," she said. "Finally."
"Yes," he replied. He patted his horse gratefully and took off a small leather pouch. He tied it to his belt and lead Serana up the marble path. Serana ran up to him. She fell into step with him and grabbed his arm, holding it tightly.
He looked at her and smiled. She returned the smile, showing her fangs. She then rested her head on his shoulder as they walked along the path to the college building. The freezing wind bit them as they walked. They reached the main doors. Stefan opened them, allowed Serana to enter first and followed her into the building. They then made their way to The Arcanaeum.
They entered The Arcanaeum to be greeted with shelves and shelves of books. A vast amount of books. Serana's face lit up with happiness. She stopped at the arch leading into the room and looked around. Her red eyes widened as she scanned the enormous bookshelves.
"Wow." she whispered softly.
Stefan stopped walking and looked behind him. He smiled.
"This is wonderful," she said happily. "I've never seen so many books."
She looked at Stefan again.
"We must stay here for a while," she pleaded. "I would like to catch up on my reading."
Stefan approached her and smiled.
"Let's find out why the werewolves are after us first," he said. "Then you can spend all the time in the world catching up on your reading."
He stroked her hair softly as Serena kissed him.
"Okay," she said.
He kissed her again before leading her over to a large desk like table. Behind this table sat an old Orc. He looked up at them as they approached.
"Arch-Mage," he said. "Can I help you?"
"Yes Urag Gro-Shub," replied Stefan. He pulled out 'The Immortal Blood' from his pouch and gave it to him.
Urag took the book. He wrinkled his nose at the state of its condition. The spine was frayed, some of the pages were dog eared and the front cover was faded.
"This isn't a college book," he said in disgust.
"No," said Serana. "It's mine."
Urag looked at her. His dark eyes took in her features. Her red eyes, her fangs she spoke and the Band of Matrimony on her finger.
"What's the problem?" asked Urag.
"The final sentence on the final page," said Stefan.
Urag flicked to it and scanned the final sentence.
"The centuries of war can be ended by the blood of my enemies," he read aloud.
"What does it mean?" asked Stefan.
Urag looked at him. His dark eyes pierced him.
"Are you aware of the centuries of rivalry between your kind and the werewolves?" asked Urag.
"Yes," replied Stefan. "Everyone knows that."
"Well," continued Urag. "It seems that a recent turn of events has affected the Status Quo of your respective kinds."
Urag shut the book and placed it on his desk.
"Wait here," he instructed. "I may have something that could be of assistance."
He gestured for them to sit as he stood up and wandered off to a far bookshelf in the corner. Stefan gestured for Serana to sit in the empty chair. She obliged while he stood and waited.
Urag returned a few moments later with a thin book. He placed it on the desk. The book was a deep royal blue and was titled, "The Blood Of My Enemies". Urag slid it towards Stefan.
"One of two in existence," said Urag. "My other copy was stolen several years ago."
Stefan picked it up.
"You are not to take that outside," said Urag. "I will not allow this copy to be stolen too."
Stefan nodded in understanding. Serana stood up and read the book over his shoulder. Stefan opened it and began to read the contents. It told told of the centuries of warfare between the two factions and the various attempts to end it once and for all. It was all information they both knew before. However, as they read to the final page, something caught their eyes. They leaned down and read it intently.
'For centuries the lycanthropics and Vampiris have been embroiled in a slow war of attrition. A time will come when this age of conflict will cease and balance will be restored. This balance will be restored by the sacrifice of a twice-blooded child born at the light of the full moon.'
Serana and Stefan looked up from the book and turned to each other, their eyes wide with horror.
