Chapter 1: You Are Not Alone
A heavy rainfall soaked the forest, dampening the the trees and grass; the rainfall was so heavy that it had drowned out the sound of childish sobbing. Inside a large bush sat a small and young anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, clutching a small brown burlap bag in one of his gloved hands while the other was pressed to his cheek as he cried.
This young hedgehog was named Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog. He was with a special ability: the ability to run faster than the speed of sound and because of this power, he had been forced to flee to this mysterious new planet after watching his caretaker and only family, an owl named Longclaw, sacrifice herself to protect from a tribe of Echidnas that wanted him for his powers.
Sonic didn't want to abandon Longclaw and had tried to run back to her but the portal created from a ring she had tossed from the burlap bag had dissipated into nothing before he could reach her. Sonic had stood there panting from exertion before he broke down crying, having to leave his home and the only person who loved him was too much for the five year old hedgehog child; he sadly walked over to where he dropped the bag of rings and hid away in a bush when he heard the sound of thunder rolling in, taking shelter from the oncoming rainfall.
And now Sonic sat inside the bush, crying and flinching every time lightning struck across the sky and thunder boomed in the distance. Just then, a new sound found it's way to Sonic's ears: it was the sound of small footsteps crunching the wet leaves. The little hedgehog suddenly became scared, he quickly quiet down and took a small peek out of the bushes to see what it was; outside of the bushes, he saw...a girl.
It was a young girl, about seven years old, though she was rather tall for her age; she stood in the rain wearing a tattered and torn raincoat and really muddy white rain boots, and was holding an old half-broken umbrella. She had reddish brown hair, slightly tan skin and bright blue eyes that stood out behind a pair of square rimmed glasses. The girl looked around as if she was looking for something, Sonic decided to take the opportunity to run away as he didn't know whether or not this girl would hurt him.
He tried to run away in the opposite direction, but the ground had become muddy and slippery due to the heavy rain and Sonic ended up tripping and falling face first into the dirt, mud getting all over his face and upper body; Sonic slowly picked himself up and began crying again as the tumble had caused him to hurt his nose. As he sat there sobbing, he didn't hear the little girl walking up behind him and crouching down to his level.
"Hey, are you okay?", she asked. Sonic looked up at her with tears running down his face, he flinched away when she reached her hand out to touch him, but then calmed down as he realized she was merely touching his shoulder. Sonic looked up at the girl, who smiled down at him; she didn't seem bothered by the fact that he was a giant blue hedgehog nor did she she seem dangerous in any way.
Suddenly, a strike of lightning flashed across the sky, creating an enormously loud thunder boom; Sonic screamed as he jumped up and clung to the little girl out of fear, shaking vigorously. "We need to get somewhere dry and safe, its dangerous to stay out here in this weather. I live in a cave near a river not too far from here, would you like to come with me?", said the girl. Sonic lifted up his trembling head and nodded, anywhere was better than being stuck out in a rainstorm with thunder and lightning.
The little girl carried the hedgehog toddler as she walked back in the direction she had come from, they soon came upon a cave sandwiched into a cliffside next to a waterfall that fed into a river; when they stepped inside, the girl turned on a battery powered lantern, illuminating the cave in bright light. Sonic looked up to see that the cave was big but was too deep, it went as far back enough to keep them away from the rain pouring near the entrance.
Inside the cave, there were two bean bag chairs, a small foldable table with a stack of books, box of crayons and a stack of paper held down by a rock on top of it, a pile of clothes in one corner, an oversized sleeping bag in another corner, a small tool box under the table, a medium sized cardboard box next to the table and finally a fire pit in the center of the cave floor, safely away from all the other items.
Sonic felt a pair of hands gently grasp his arms as the girl tried to ease him off of her, "Its okay, you can let go now. I promise we're safe from the storm in here", she said. Sonic let go of her as he slid down, landing on the ground on his rear with a soft thud, "There you go. So what's your name, little fella?", the girl said. "Its s-s-Sonic...", said Sonic as he sniffed. "Sonic, huh? That's a pretty cool name. Nice to meet you, my name is Penelope. You sit tight right there, Sonic, and I'll go get you a nice warm towel to dry off with", said the girl now revealed to be named Penelope.
She walked over to the clothes pile and dug around in it until she found a small, light blue towel; she walked back over to Sonic and draped the towel around his shoulders, "There you go, nice and warm. Are you feeling hungry?", she said. Sonic nodded his head as he snuggled into the warmth of the fluffy towel, Penelope walked over to the cardboard box and pulled out a tea kettle; she then grabbed her umbrella and walked outside, she soon came back inside with a kettle full of water from the river.
Penelope then pulled out a packet of matches and used one to light a fire in the fire pit, and placed the kettle on top of a rack over the fire. She then walked over to the box again and pulled out two instant soup cups, carrying them with her as she went to sit by the fire with Sonic. "So Sonic, where did you come from? I know you're not a person like me but I also know you're not an ordinary animal, so...where did you come from?", asked Penelope.
Sonic looked down at the bag of rings still firmly grasped in his hand, "I-I-I came from another world, I grew up in a place called South Island. I lived with an owl named Longclaw, she took care of me but you see...I have a special power. I can...run really fast, faster than anyone else can", he said.
"Wait you mean you have super speed?", asked Penelope.
"Yeah, I guess that's what you could call it. Anyway, Longclaw told me I had to keep my powers a secret but I love running so fast. I came home to bring her a flower and we were suddenly attacked by these strangers who wanted my powers, Longclaw tried to fly us somewhere safe but she got hit by an arrow and fell to the ground. Then she gave me this bag of rings, that can turn into portals, and told me that the best way for me to stay safe is to hide, and if I'm discovered to use one to go to a new world.
"Then Longclaw made me run through the portal, I didn't want to leave her behind but when I tried to run back to her, the portal disappeared. Now...now I'm...I'm all alone! I don't have anyone to take care of me, I'm all by myself on this weird planet!", said Sonic as he began to cry again. Penelope then stood up and walked back over to the cardboard box, pulling a small pink box from it; she then sat across from Sonic again just as the kettle began whistling.
She opened the box to reveal to Sonic that it had about four strawberry frosted doughnuts inside of it, "The water's boiling so I make our soup and afterwards we can have a doughnut for dessert, but I'll only let you have one on one condition: you stop saying you've got nobody to take care of you!", said Penelope. Sonic looked at her with a confused expression, "Okay but why do you want me to, Penelope?", he asked.
Penelope suddenly gazed at him with a look of determination, "Because I'm not nobody!", she shouted. It was then that Sonic realized what she was talking about and he began to smile widely, "Wait, you...you mean...?", he trailed off as he couldn't contain his joy. "Yup that's right, think of me as your new big sister!", Penelope said with a smile. Sonic let out a cheerful squeal as he stood up and jumped into Penelope's arms, hugging her tightly.
Just then, a thought came to Sonic's mind. "Penelope, where's your family? Who takes care of you?", he asked. He felt Penelope tense up before she relaxed and set him down, "I'll...tell you about that some other time, mostly because it's not a happy story. Right now, let's have dinner", she said as she opened the instant soup cups and poured the boiling water into both of them. Sonic didn't question her about it further because he could tell that it wasn't a pleasant subject Penelope wanted to discuss.
They sat there and ate their soup, then once they were finished, Penelope let Sonic have that doughnut she promised him, giggling at the adorable smile on his face as he enjoyed the little fried pastry. Then they sat on the bean bag together as Penelope read one of the books she had on the table, it was the story of The Gingerbread Man.
"Ouch! I feel bad that he got eaten at the end", said Sonic as he pointed to the final two illustrations in the book, the first being when the fox devoured the Gingerbread Man and the second being the fox lying by a tree looking happy and with a full belly. "Well, the Gingerbread Man should've known better not to trust him so quickly. You can't just go along with a stranger no matter what they say, you don't know whether they'll help you or hurt you. Now...want me to read another one?", said Penelope.
Sonic nodded with a smile on his face as Penelope stood up and grabbed a different book; they sat there for the rest of the night, reading the books that Penelope kept on her table. It wasn't until they were halfway through reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears that Sonic had fallen asleep, Penelope smiled as she quietly stood up and put the book back on the table; she then pulled a blanket out of the clothes pile and draped it on Sonic, letting him sleep on the bean bag chair.
She laid down inside her sleeping bag and took one last look at him, "Goodnight...little brother", she whispered before she turned off the lantern and went to sleep.
