Chapter 13
Ahsoka now sat in a chair in Padme's room next to the bed. The senator was still sound asleep, without the occasional sounds of the machines that occupied the place it would be dead quiet. Ahsoka thought some quiet would be a good thing considering all the action she had seen in the past few months. It was different though, Padme would have been as good as dead if she had not had the vision about Polis Massa.
"I still sense the turmoil within you, Ahsoka," the Daughter declared. "Tell me what is on your mind."
"I don't even know where to begin my lady," Ahsoka began. "I still have trouble wrapping my head around all of this. Palpatine, a sith lord, Anakin betrayed the order, and Padme is carrying his children!"
"Do you feel betrayed by her?" The Daughter questioned. "I know that you considered Senator Amidala to be your friend."
"I do, yes," Ahsoka replied. "I like to think that we were close enough for her to confide in me. I understand there are rules against having attachments, but I still would have listened and tried to understand what was going on."
"Be honest with me, Ahsoka,"the Daughter said. "Could you have brought it upon yourself to report your master to the council?"
"…No, I don't think I could," Ahsoka replied. "Not after everything, both of them have done for me."
"Well," the Daughter said. "That is something that you will have to take up with the senator when she wakes up."
"I know," Ahsoka said. " I'm not looking forward to it. This is going to be beyond awkward."
Ahsoka sat there for a few minutes more in silence, still lost in all her thoughts. Soon enough, Padme began to stir. Her eyes opened as she turned her head and looked right at Ahsoka. Her eyes widened in shock, and she tried to sit up, but she winced in pain and laid right back down.
"Ahsoka," Padme said, still in shock. "You're here, but how is that possible?"
"I had a vision," Ahsoka replied.
"Where have you been?" Padme questioned. "I wasn't sure if I'd ever get the chance to see you again."
"The exact details can be explained later," Ahsoka said, with a steely expression. "I will tell you the basics though; I ran into Lux after I walked away from Jedi order, he offered me a place to stay until I figured out what to do next. I found ways to make use of the skills I acquired from my Jedi training, but I started having visions a while back, and one of them showed me an image of this system. So Lux and I, along with some clone troopers that I was able to rescue, arrived here to find Senator Organa and Master Yoda already here. Then Obi-Wan showed up later with you, telling us what happened on Mustafar, and that you were pregnant, with Anakin's child!"
Padme averted her gaze in shame. "Ahsoka…I,"
"Were you ever going to tell me, Padme?" Ahsoka asked with anger in her voice. "You and Anakin have been together all this time, and neither of you ever confided in me, why?"
"Ahsoka," Padme said. "I wanted so badly to, believe me. Anakin and I just felt it was safer if nobody, not even people we both trusted knew. There was always the fear that it would become public to the council or the senate."
"You believed I would have ratted both of you out?" Ahsoka questioned. "Padme, we are friends, even if I did find out I am not the type to go squealing to the authorities without a good enough reason. Besides, I had a feeling something was going on between you two, Anakin was not a conventional Jedi. It did not take me very long to learn that. "
"I have always trusted you, Ahsoka," Padme said. "You must understand that; a matter this sensitive has always scared me in all honesty. I knew what I was getting into when Anakin and I chose to get married and keep it a secret."
"Wait a minute," Ahsoka said. "You and Anakin were married, you took it that far?!"
"Yes," Padme said. "I'm afraid we did. It was before you came into the picture when the Clone Wars first began. We knew that it was a bad idea to start with, but after a near-death experience, well, things just happened. Now here we are."
" Yes," Ahsoka replied. "It has been a crazy turn of events in the last few months."
"Ahsoka, I must thank you," Padme declared. "When Satine was here much earlier, I was able to stay awake long enough for her to explain her situation. I am grateful that you were able to save her on your mission on Mandalore."
"Yes," Ahsoka said. "It is a huge relief that Satine is alive and safe."
Ahsoka let a small smile form as she spoke her next statement. "I am sure Obi-Wan is beyond relieved as well. Anakin always told me about encounters he and Obi-Wan had with Satine in the past. I think it's more than fair to say Obi-Wan had some sort of attachment to her."
"Yes," Padme said. "Satine had told me stories of her early encounters with Obi-Wan when he was a padawan learning of Qui-Gon Jinn."
"How long has Obi-Wan known?" Ahsoka questioned.
"Of Anakin and I?" Padme asked. "I do not know for sure. Before I went to Mustafar to stop Anakin, he showed up at my apartment and told me he could sense that my child was Anakin's. I promise you, Ahsoka, that is all he said."
"Padme, did they not tell you?" Ahsoka questioned.
"Tell me what, Ahsoka?" Padme asked with panic. "Is the baby okay?"
"Padme, you're carrying twins," Ahsoka gently said.
"Twins?!" Padme exclaimed. "The medic who I saw when I first found out I was pregnant did not mention such a thing."
"Did you not see medics again after you found out you were pregnant?" Ahsoka questioned.
"No," Padme said. "I did not want anyone to find out who the father was."
"Well, there are two heartbeats in there," Ahsoka said. "At least Satine said that's what the medics told her."
"Do you think they will both be force sensitive?" Padme questioned.
"I might be able to find out," Ahsoka declared. "If you let me touch your stomach, I can try and sense for Force signatures."
"You really think you'll be able to do that?" Padme inquired.
"It is worth a try," Ahsoka declared. "It won't bring any harm to the babies, I promise."
"As I said earlier," Padme began. "I trust you, Ahsoka."
"Ahsoka," the Daughter said. "If you'll allow me, I should be able to aide you in this task. I do not expect the Force signatures to be powerful since the children are unborn, but I should be able to detect them, no matter how faint they may be."
"I would be grateful for that, my lady," Ahsoka replied.
"Are you ready, Padme?" Ahsoka asked.
Padme nodded.
Ahsoka placed her hand on Padme's stomach and began to concentrate. She tried to sense if there were any traces of the Force inside Padme.
"I do feel something inside of her, my lady," Ahsoka declared. "It feels very faint, though, like you said."
"Concentrate harder, dear Ahsoka," the Daughter said. "There is something more."
Ahsoka did as she was asked and concentrated a little harder, with the Daughter's help, she was able to sense it.
"You are right, my lady," Ahsoka declared. "There are two Force signatures in there."
"Padme," Ahsoka said. "They are faint, but both of your babies have Force signatures."
"Do you think they will be as strong as you and Anakin some…"
Padme's inquiry was interrupted by a sting a pain.
"Padme, what is it?" Ahsoka asked.
Padme looked down at her stomach and back at Ahsoka.
"Ahsoka," she began. "I think it's time."
"Don't move," Ahsoka said. "I'll go find one of the medics and get the others."
With that, Ahsoka sprinted away to do so.
A few hours later, Ahsoka and Lux were standing outside of Padme's room, which had now been turned into a delivery room. The droids had told them that would not allow more than two people in there with her, so Ahsoka allowed for Obi-Wan and Satine to go in.
"Will she be okay?" Lux questioned.
"She should be," Ahsoka replied. "They were able to fix her pharynx. Satine did say she was exhausted, but she has been resting for days. Hopefully, she worked up some strength.
They watched from the outside for several more minutes; after a few more minutes, they saw a droid holding a messy, but a healthy-looking baby.
"Thank goodness," Lux said.
"Yes, the first baby looks healthy," Ahsoka commented with a dazed look. "Now, let's hope the second one will be okay too."
"Are you okay Ahsoka?", Lux asked.
"Yeah", was her quick response.
"You don't seem okay", Lux responded.
"I've never really been around a pregnant women before, let alone a woman in labor. It's a bit surreal", Ahsoka said while staring at the scene in front of them. "I think everything is just hitting me now. It seems more real now…..and now I'm rambling, feel free to ignore me."
Lux was about to reply, but only a few seconds after Padme was screaming again and then the droid was holding the second of the twins.
"It looks like they are both okay," Ahsoka said. "She did it."
Satine came out a few minutes later.
"A boy and a girl," she said to the pair. "Both of them are healthy."
"That's fantastic news," Lux replied. "How is Padme?"
"She did great," Satine declared. "They assure us she will be okay. She just needs time to rest; after all, what she just went through was quite exhausting. If you two wish in an hour, the medics will allow you to go in and see her and the twins."
"Thank you, Satine," Ahsoka said. "We will."
Ahsoka and Lux then departed, with Lux going to see Senator Organa and Ahsoka to see the Clone Troopers.
Ahsoka found the Clones in the mess hall. Given all the rush and chaos this was the first chance she had had to really look at all people Rex had managed to save. Rex, Kix, Jesse, and Dogma were playing some card game at one of the tables. Nearby Gregor, Wooley, Trapper, Crys, and Boil were at another table eating. At one of the windows Wolffe, Warhog, Sinker, Comet, and Boost were looking out into space. Broadside, Contrail, and Draa were closer to the others, cleaning their weapons. Meanwhile Spark, Blackout, and Stone seemed to be napping near the back of the room.
There were only twenty of them. Ahsoka wasn't sure if she'd ever seen such a small number of Clones in a mess hall before. She was happy that some were saved, but it was devastating that she could not have saved more. So many friends gone. Even if they were still alive, they probably wouldn't hesitate to gun her down. Before Ahsoka could continue on this train of thought, Rex looked up and saw her.
"Commander," he said with a smile. "Do you want to join us."
"I just thought that you guys might want a update," Ahsoka said tiredly. "Padme has given birth, the babies are healthy, and visitors will be allowed in about an hour."
Her statement was received with cheers, while Dogma got up from the table and pushed her toward it and Boil went toward the kitchen and returned with drinks.
"This calls for a celebration. The General is not here so we should celebrate like he would have" Kix announced.
"I don't know, with him that usually leads to explosions, or crashes. Both were common with him." Ahsoka commented. Still though, she grabbed a cup like everyone else.
When an hour passed, Ahsoka knocked on the door and saw Satine and Obi-Wan standing by Padme's bedside. Padme was holding both of the babies.
"I'm glad to see that you made it through labor, okay Padme," Ahsoka stated.
"We will let Ahsoka and Senator Bonteri have some time to see the twins," Obi-Wan said, looking at Padme. "If you do not mind, I will go tell Senator Organa and Master Yoda that you are ready for some more visitors."
"Of course," Padme replied.
Obi-Wan and Satine left, leaving Ahsoka and Lux alone with Padme and her babies.
"Come and see you two," Padme said, catching Ahsoka and Lux's attention.
Both of them approached her bedside and got their first good luck at the twins.
"Wow," Lux said.
"I've never seen human babies until now," Ahsoka stated. "These little ones are adorable, though."
"What are their names Padme?" Lux asked.
"Lux Bonteri, Ahsoka Tano," Padme began. "I'd like you to meet Luke and Leia. Would you like to hold them?"
"I've never held a baby before," Lux declared.
"I have before," Ahsoka replied. "It was a baby Hutt though."
"It shouldn't be that much different," Padme said. "Just make sure you're supporting their head and their bottom."
"Okay," Ahsoka said. "Give one to me."
Padme carefully handed baby Luke over to Ahsoka. She carefully cradled him against her chest, looking down at his little face. Padme carefully gave Leia to Lux, and he looked closely at Ahsoka so he could mirror her actions.
Ahsoka fully didn't understand why but for some reason, seeing Lux trying to hold a baby made her smile a little.
"Hey, little guy," she said, focusing her attention back to Luke. "You're so tiny and cute. I'm sorry you have to be born into a world like this. They said your father was supposed to bring an end to the darkness, but unfortunately, he managed only to make the darkness even stronger.
She stroked his little arm with one of her fingers.
"I know you and your sister are too young to understand this," she continued. "But your father, I loved him very much, not the same way your mother did, of course, but he meant a great deal to me. I can't promise that I can always be there when you need me to, but I will promise you this: I will do whatever I can to make sure you and your sister, and your mother are safe; because your father would've wanted to make sure you were protected."
"That was very sweet of you, Ahsoka," the Daughter declared.
"You were listening to me my lady?" Ahsoka inquired. "Wait, I really shouldn't be surprised."
Ahsoka took another look at Luke before placing him back in Padme's arms. She went over to Lux again and took a look at the sleeping baby Leia, stroking her little arm as she did with Luke.
Then she looked back at Padme.
"Padme…" she began. "I know they're your children but.."
"I know, Ahsoka," Padme said. "As much as it pains me, I have been thinking about it as well. It would be too dangerous for me to keep both of them and raise them, especially since I will now have to go into hiding. That is why I am cherishing the time I get to spend with them at this moment."
"Well, I think we should let you have some more alone time with them now," Lux said, handing Leia back to her. "I am sure you will have many more visitors later."
"Yeah," Ahsoka said. "I have a feeling Rex, and a few of the 501st will want to see the children of their former commanding officer. Rest up if you can Padme, I'm sure we'll have a lot of tough decisions to make in the next few days."
Ahsoka and Lux made their way toward the door,
"Ahsoka," Padme said, catching the young togruta's attention.
Ahsoka looked back at her friend and the twins.
"Thank you," Padme said. "Not just for my life, but for my babies as well."
"You're welcome," Ahsoka said with a smile.
A few days later, Ahsoka, Lux, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Satine, Bail, the Clone Troopers as well as Padme holding the twins were sitting on Senator Organa's ship.
"What are we to do?" Senator Organa questioned. "For the safety of the children and Padme, it is too dangerous to keep all three of them together."
"Padme as much as I hate to admit it," Satine said, looking at her friend. "Bail is right."
"I know," Padme said, sadly looking at her babies.
"Separated, they must be," Yoda declared. "Harder for Palpatine to track down; it will make them."
"I will take the girl," Bail declared. "My wife and I were talking about adopting a little girl. She will be a princess."
"And what of Luke?" Ahsoka questioned.
"To Tattoine, you will take him Obi-Wan," Yoda declared. "Keep an eye on him, you will and teach him the ways of the Force."
"Yes, Master," Obi-Wan replied.
"Wait, Anakin had a stepbrother on Tattoine, right?" Ahsoka questioned. "What about him?"
"I will make sure he knows about his nephew," Obi-Wan declared. "I cannot imagine he would ever let him learn about the Force through considering all Anakin went through."
"One minute Obi," Satine said, getting the Jedi knight's attention. "What exactly do you think you know about raising a child?"
"You know nothing about raising one either," Obi-Wan retorted.
"That may be," Satine replied. "I can not bear the idea of you solely raising the boy. Plus, this is not just any child; he happens to be the son of my dear friend."
She looked over at Padme.
"My dear Padme," she said. "Please, allow me to help you; your children deserve the best."
"I would be honored if you took part in raising Luke, Satine," Padme said, smiling at her friend.
"It's settled then," Satine said, throwing a smile in Obi-Wan's direction. He looked back with a mix of confusion, exasperation, and fondness on his face.
"Senator Amidala," Yoda said to the new mother. "Allowed to visit your children, you will be, of course, your safety we must discuss now."
Padme looked at Ahsoka.
"Ahsoka, whatever you have been doing, I would like to help you if possible," she declared.
Ahsoka was silent for a few minutes before looking at the former senator. "Are you sure, Padme? I can take you to a place where you'll be safe, but I don't stay there all the time, and I will be going on some dangerous missions in the future."
"I understand that," Padme replied. "I have dealt with dangerous situations before. Even if it's not enough to make up for my secrets, I want to help you. Besides, you said you would explain everything to me, and you have yet to do that."
"Alright," Ahsoka replied.
Ahsoka looked at Mater Yoda.
"Master," she began. "My new allies should be more than capable of making sure Padme is safe. As long as we are given a way of communicating with Master Kenobi and Senator Organa, we should not have trouble arranging visits to the twins."
Yoda smiled and nodded at the former padawan.
"What about us, General Kenobi?" Crys questioned. "What are we to do?"
"While I appreciate you all, and have been honored to fight alongside you these past few years," Obi-Wan began. "I do not believe I will need your assistance with what about I'm about to do. You should be free to choose your paths now. Ahsoka has given you that opportunity."
"I don't know about the rest of you," Kix declared. "I wish to stay with Ahsoka. I know I have the option to go elsewhere, but she may need me. As good as she is, some injuries are bound to occur."
Ahsoka just laughed at this.
"I've been fighting alongside you for too long to want to walk away now," Rex said, looking at Ahsoka. "I would be honored to continue to fight alongside you, Ahsoka."
"Thank you, Rex," Ahsoka said with a smile.
The rest of the clone troopers looked at each other before nodding.
"Commander Tano," Blackout said. "If you'll have us, we're prepared to assist you in any battles that you are bound to face in the future."
Ahsoka looked at Master Yoda, who gave her another smile and then at Obi-Wan, who did the same. She looked back at clone troopers.
"I would be honored to fight alongside you all again," she said.
"That's all good and well," Senator Organa said. "There is still one more matter we need to solve, though. The people of Naboo will be expecting a body if we are to make them believe that Senator Amidala is dead."
"Yes," Yoda added. "Otherwise, looking for her, Palpatine and the Empire will be."
"That certainly is a problem," Obi-Wan declared. "We don't have a body to handover."
"I have a suggestion," Jesse spoke up.
Everyone looked at the former 501st trooper.
"What is it, Jesse?" Ahsoka inquired.
"What if we somehow fake a shuttle crash," Jesse suggested. "We can take some samples of the senator's DNA…no offense senator, and make it seem as if the body was burned beyond recognition."
"That might actually work," Lux said. "They do cremations on Naboo, do they not?"
"Yes, they do," Padme replied with a laugh.
"Arrange it, we shall then," Master Yoda declared. "Senator Organa, take care of things you will."
"Master Yoda," Padme said. "If you will allow me, I would like to be there to witness all of this. I would like some closure on my old life if there is a way to have it."
"We can go incognito Master Yoda," Ahsoka added. "I will guard her and make sure she is safe."
"Very well," Yoda said, looking at Ahsoka and Padme. "Say your goodbyes to the children you should, Senator Amidala. Ahsoka, speak with you and Obi-Wan, I wish to."
Padme went to hand off the twins to Bail and Satine and say goodbye to everyone, Lux, and the clones went with her. Obi-Wan and Ahsoka followed Yoda over to one of the corners of the room.
"What is it you wished to tell us, Master Yoda?" Ahsoka asked.
"Wish to tell you both," Yoda began. "The last time you see me, this may be. To Dagobah, I will go. Much there is still to learn about the Force. Find me there; the emperor should not. As for you, Obi-Wan, while on Tattoine, training I have for you. Discovered the path to immortality, an old friend has."
Obi-Wan paused for a moment before looking at Yoda in shock.
"Qui-Gon," he said.
"Yes," Yoda replied.
Ahsoka didn't know what to say, so she just kneeled and hugged the green Jedi Master.
"May the Force be with you, Master Yoda," she said.
She pulled away.
"May the Force be with you, Ahsoka," Master Yoda said.
The green Jedi master smiled at her.
With that, she and Obi-Wan went over to Padme, who was standing with Satine, who was holding Luke.
"Obi-Wan," she said to the fellow former Jedi. "Be careful; take care of Satine and Luke."
"I will," Obi-Wan replied. "You be careful as well, Ahsoka."
"I'll try," Ahsoka replied.
"Ahsoka," Satine said. "If there is still any way I can help you, please do not hesitate to contact us."
"I won't, Satine," Ahsoka replied. "Thank you."
She looked over at Padme and Lux.
"Are we ready?" she questioned.
Padme and Lux both nodded.
"Let's go then."
Ahsoka and Padme stood a reasonable distance from the crowd on Naboo, both of them wearing a cloak to hide their faces from the public. Lux wanted to join them, but as a Senetor who was a known friend of Padme's he had to make an appearance at the funeral and didn't want to risk anyone seeing him in the wrong place. Ahsoka instructed the clone troopers to wait on the ship.
"It shouldn't be too long now," Ahsoka declared.
They waited along with the rest of the mourners for the shuttle to make its appearance. About twenty minutes later, they saw it flying into view like they had planned it swerved as if losing control and crashed right into a nearby rock formation, causing flames to erupt from the inside of it. The crowd gasped in horror and sorrow.
"Well, now there's no way for them to deny that you're dead," Ahsoka declared.
"Yes," Padme replied in sadness. "Now, the life I once knew is truly over."
