Jang Gyeowul is definitely not a popular girl. She is plain, aloof, dedicated and smart, but not enough to distinguish her. She has one close friend, Chu Minha, although she can work in a group set up quite well. She has one big secret, just like many schoolgirls.
She has a crush on one of her seniors, Ahn Jungwon. Not your usual crush, but a big crush. So big, that she asks Jungwon's friend, Lee Ikjun, on anything about Jungwon.
You see, Ahn Jungwon is polar opposite from Gyeowul. He is multitalented. He was in school's baseball team for a year, and in the band for the rest of the school year, he can speak Italian, and he is so smart that he won a biology competition. He is also handsome and friendly to anyone. The fact that he also has popular and talented friends definitely increases his popularity.
So how these very different two people interacted with each other? They were working on a biology school fair to represent their school. The team was composed of her, Ikjun, Jeongwon, Yang Seokhyung, both Jeongwon and Ikjun's best friends, and her fellow junior, Bae Junhee. Ikjun was the only one who put effort to be close to her. She is grateful for Ikjun, although she's not offended that only Ikjun did that. They treated her with respect, and that was enough.
Until one encounter on the library.
"You shouldn't speak so harshly to her like that."
Gyeowul was putting her books back to her bag when she heard him.
"I'm sorry? I don't understand?"
"Look, I know we're not close and you probably won't listen to me," continued Jungwon, "but I know that girl. You shouldn't speak to her so harsh and discourage her on her studies like that."
Gyeowul had stared at Jungwon steadily before she replied. "Sunbae, you do not know the whole truth. I had looked at her report card and tested and her general knowledge before our session today. It is the truth that there is not enough time for her to catch up on her studies. She was below average in all of her courses, except for Korean language and sport."
Jungwon had sighed before he said, "While perhaps it is true that she needs to catch up to so much things, who are you to say that she will definitely fail on her exams? You may be smart, and trusted enough to be chosen as her tutor, but you are neither her teacher nor God in the end. Her chance of failure is now increased because you planted seed of cynicism into her. How would you feel yourself if someone said something so negative, without much sympathy, about your future? Especially if it has not happened yet? You are smart and talented, Gyeowul, but you should put yourself on others' shoes much more, Gyeowul."
Something about his words that day just made her paying attention to him more than usual. Then boom, she has a crush on him. She didn't know when, nor could she pinpoint the exact cause, but she likes him. So much.
Thanks to Ikjun, she can steal little moments and knowledge of the great Ahn Jungwon. She really tried to talk to him, she really did. But she always gets so shy whenever he is close with her. She is already giddy by receiving chocolate pie from him and one simple text from him. However, she wants more.
She wants to hold his hand in a long extended time. She wants to know why he is so interested to be a priest. She wants to know why he learns to play drum. She wants to know all of it. She wants to be a larger part of his life.
That's why, she will confess her feeling to him today. Jang Gyeowul has enough. She would rather have a rejection than never knowing of his feelings. If he didn't share the same feeling, or interested enough with her, then so be it.
"Okay, Mom, I will call you later. Yeah, don't worry, I will just be hanging out with my friends. Okay, bye."
There he is, the object of Gyeowul's heart. She feels her cheeks getting hotter as she realizes how broad Jungwon's shoulder is. She wonders how it feels-
Focus, Jang Gyeowul! It is now or never, Gyeowul's mind screams inside.
She pokes Jungwon on his shoulder.
"Oh, Gyeowul, it's you," says Jungwon with a smile.
"Yes, sunbae," replies Gyeowul. Gyeowul is screaming to herself inside for giving him a short answer.
Awkward silence envelopes them as they do not know how to continue the conversation. Jungwon about to asks her something before she speaks first.
"Ahn Jungwon sunbaenim, would you like to eat with me?"
"Sure, we can eat together with my friends if you like. I'm sure they will not mind," replies Jungwon, still with a smile.
"I mean, just the two of us," said Gyeowul in a quiet voice.
Jungwon doesn't say anything, his face looks unreadable for Gyeowul. He doesn't look happy much about her suggestion, but not angry either. Maybe he's not in the mood for food?
"I mean, it doesn't have to eating out, we can study together, just the two of us," exclaimed Gyeowul.
No sound but slight chatter of other students and wind around them. It is a pretty windy day on May. It is still spring, and summer hasn't arrived yet.
"I'm sorry, I don't think I can make up time for that, especially this week. I'm just...I'm not- I'm also not comfortable with the idea of us being alone together, sorry, Gyeowul-ah."
In that moment, Gyeowul can feel a slight crack inside her heart. She builds up courage just for nothing. She puts on some lip tint with Minha's help, for nothing. She collects informations about Jeongwon from Ikjun, for nothing.
Ahn Jeongwon has given his answer on his answer, and he doesn't share the same feelings, or interested enough with her. Gyeowul decides it is enough. The man has given his answer after all. She will not waste time on a stupid crush.
Now she has to learn and spend time to erase Ahn Jungwon from her heart and mind.
