A/N: Welcome, readers to Take to Heart. I thought about writing this in the second person but decided against it as you can see. I understand if you're disappointed by the length. All I ask is that if you are a writer who thinks a story/chapter cannot be less than x words, then keep that opinion to yourselves. Everyone's writing style is different, even Cristina Yang's style, though I have no idea what writing style she uses. Enough rambling. Onward!
Disclaimer: I do not own Grey's Anatomy (GA) or any of the characters.
The human heart.
Growing up, Cristina Yang knew she was going to become a doctor. How could she not when, at the age of nine, Cristina felt her father's last heartbeat in her hands? The heart always fascinated Cristina. How was it that the heart could beat when disconnected from the body? Everything about the organ was fascinating.
When threatened, the human heart had either a fight or flight response. When she found out that Izzie had clipped Denny's LVAD wire in an attempt to worsen his heart condition and get him moved up the transplant, Cristina did not believe that Izzie would be that stupid. The flimsy excuse that she loved Denny sounded hollow. Didn't Izzie understand that her career was more important than patient care? Izzie needed to take to heart the program, otherwise, she wouldn't make it.
Now as she sat slumped against the hallway wall, waiting for Bailey to call her and her friends in one by one, Cristina wondered what it took for Izzie to risk her career over someone who was clearly going to die. Izzie's selfish behavior almost cost Cristina and the other interns their job. Way to go, Dr. Model.
Cristina turned to Izzie, a gnawing feeling of guilt striking her in her stomach as she knew Izzie would not make it through the program. She knew Meredith would. Meredith was a great surgeon. Alex would make it through as well. Even though he was a pompous [censored], Evilspawn would make it. There was something about Alex, other than his [censored] bedside manner that would allow him to move forward. George was a question mark. Cristina didn't know what would happen. Perhaps Bambi would take a page out of Izzie's book and end up not making it.
Cristina turned to Meredith, then to Izzie, then to George, then back to Izzie again. Would her friendship with Meredith or the others change? Forthwith, Dr. Webber approached the group and told Cristina that Derek needed her in the OR. Cristina frowned. "I'm in time-out," Cristina pointed out.
"Time-out's over. Let's go!" Dr. Webber ordered.
Cristina up and left. Her thoughts about Izzie could wait. A chance to live and breathe inside an OR, however, could not.
