Mary pretended that her parents weren't awake and waiting for her to come back home from her date. From the corner of her eyes she could see their curtain being pushed back and could feel her parents eyes on them.
She was going to kill them when she got inside.
"I'd offer to walk you to the door, but I think I wouldn't be able to come back to the car." John said, looking around her. She could hear him biting back his laughter and closed her eyes for a moment to count to ten to calm down.
"They're just overly excited." she told him. "They've been waiting for this for a while."
"Yeah, same with my parents. My only saving grace is that they don't live in town." John said. "But if I don't call them tonight and let them know about our date they'll come to interrogate me themselves."
"Yeah well I'm about to be interrogated myself." Mary said, eyeing the tree next to her bedroom window. "I'm debating to sneak into my own house."
John laughed softly at that, just looking at her for a moment. "I enjoyed tonight." he said, just as softly. "Even the part where we almost had a fist fight about paying for the bill."
Mary just smiled at that. "I didn't want you to think that I was just using you for a free dinner." she said. "But...I enjoyed tonight too."
"Good." John said, shifting in his seat and rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I'd...I'd really like to see you again. Like this. Not just at meetings and stuff. Like...a date."
"I saw you try to rip my throat out and take down wolves twice your size." Mary said. "Why are you so nervous now?"
"Because when you're fighting, that's all that matters and it's a very singular thought process." John said. "This...well, I like you Mary. I like you a lot. And...I'm afraid of doing something to ruin it."
Mary felt her throat tighten and she looked out the window. "Well...for what it counts." she said lowly. "I like you too."
She couldn't see it but she could feel that he was smiling at her.
"So...does that mean I have permission to take you out on another date?" he asked, a hopeful tone to his voice.
"Don't you have alpha duties to take care of?" she asked, teasing slightly.
"You're a lot more important to me than any alpha duties." John told her softly. She ignored how the words made her stomach churn and a heat appear on her cheeks.
"Stop saying all these cheesy things." Mary said with a bit of a laugh. She glanced at her house again, not entirely sure she wanted to go inside. "I should go before dad comes out and starts demanding answers."
"I'll walk you to your door." John offered as he turned the car off and got out. Mary had just gotten her seatbelt off when John was already beside her door and opening it for her. She bit back a smile as he reached for her hand and she took his, letting him help her out of the car.
Once she was out he held his arm out towards her and she goodnaturedly woved her arm through it as they walked up to her porch. Her stomach flipped once more when he looked at her and with his free hand gently placed the lock of her hair from the front of her face to behind her ear.
"I'll take a look at my schedule, there are a lot of meetings I need to go to." he told her softly. "But I'll try to figure out the soonest time I can see you again."
"You're a leader of the pack, you can't just be putting everything aside for one omega." Mary reminded him. "Not planning on leaving town anytime soon anymore."
"Anymore?" John repeated curiously. "I'm guessing that's a story for some other time?"
Mary nodded. "Some other time." she echoed.
The both of them looked at the front door, they could hear her parents footsteps just behind it, no doubt with their ears pressed onto the wood to hear what they were saying.
Mary shook her head. "Gonna kill them." she whispered. Glancing at John she saw the uncertainty on his face as he looked at her and back at the door.
She squeezed his hand. "Next time." she said softly. "Next time. Without our audience."
John nodded at that, smiling down at her. "Next time." he repeated after her. "I'm fine with that."
Mary looked away for a moment, chewing on the inside of her cheek. "I have a bit of a favor to ask you." she said, watching him perk up. "You're not going to like it."
"Tell me."
"I want to fight you again. As wolves." Mary told him, watching the light leave his eyes at her request. "We both know that I was cheated out on a technicality."
"This...isn't going to prove anything." John said softly. "The initiation is done, no one will allow it to happen again."
"I don't care about that, not anymore anyway." Mary told him. "I want to prove this to you and to me. I would've won."
"You don't have anything to prove to me." John said helplessly. "I yield, I defer to you Mary. In whatever way I can."
"Thank you." Mary said simply. "But I still want to fight you, no holding back, all out, just like before."
John stared at her. "I can't change your mind?" he asked hopefully, deflating when she shook her head.
He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. "That's a hell of a second date." he said, trying to laugh. "But, and I feel like I'm going to regret this, but alright."
Mary smiled at that and took a chance, coming up to him and kissing his cheek. "Thank you." she said softly.
John had frozen at the kiss, his hand coming up to his cheek where her lips had been. "I'll see you later then." he said softly, leaning in towards her but then hesitating and pulling back. "Next time."
Mary nodded watching him go back to his car. He got in and after glancing at her once more started his car and drove away. She watched until his lights were gone and took a deep breath, turning to the door, not bothering to take her keys out when the door opened with her parents there staring at her.
Mary quickly pushed past them, dodging her dad trying to grab her. "We'll talk tomorrow!" she called out to them as she quickly ran upstairs to her room, closing and locking the door behind her.
