Author's Note: Okay I know that people voted for the chapter where Furuya and Sawamura work together on a school project for this next chapter and I was planning on writing it (started it last week) but then I accidentally wrote this whole chapter at work yesterday. Furuya and Sawamura's school project will happen soon but in the meantime here's some roommate bonding gone wrong.
Yui's POV:
"Ono-senpai, I'm bored." I whine before burying my face in my pillow. The sound of rain hitting the ground outside can be heard from in the dorms. Rain isn't usually something that can cancel practice but today's different. The weather has been bad all week. It's been raining for the majority of the past 2 days, plus there's been heavy downpours and thunderstorms. In fact, there's one going on right now. It's been cloudy for so long that I can't remember the last time I've seen the sun. And to make things worse, it's been really windy too and along with the inconvenience of the wind it makes it feel way colder too. This morning, we got to practice and the entire field was flooded. The dirt on the pitcher's mound was a mud pile losing its structural integrity. Coach Kataoka had us do indoor training this morning but called off afternoon practice, telling us that we can use the indoor training grounds or film review, but that we better not be caught practicing outside in the rain today.
"Go to the indoor training grounds. You can do some batting practice, find a pitcher to catch for, or do some weight lifting." Ono suggests.
"The indoor training area is filled. All the equipment's being used." I tell him.
"Then go to the dining room and do some film review with Nabe and whoever else is there."
"I've reviewed that game so many times, Ono-senpai."
He pauses. "Well I'm going to do some homework with Zono and a few others. If you want you can come with me and we can pick up the scorebook from Takashima-sensei and you can review that. Okay?"
"Okay."
"Let's go then." He zips up his backpack and grabs his phone and key. "By the way, if you guys need anything either text me or I'll be in Zono's room."
With that, the two of us make our way out the dorm. We get the book from Takashima-sensei. Since I don't have a bag, I tuck it under my sweater so it stays dry. Ono goes to study with his friends and I go back to the dorm.
When I get back, Furuya is tossing a ball gently into the air and catching it. I sit at my desk and start reviewing the book.
-30 minutes later-
After reviewing scores for some time, I set down my book and stretch. Furuya's still tossing the ball in the air. I have an idea. I pick up my baseball glove and put it on. "Hey Furuya-senpai." I call to get his attention and make sure he sees the glove. He sits up and nods, saying he gets the idea without saying anything. He gently tosses the ball and I catch it. I wait a moment for him to get his glove then he nods for me to continue. I toss the ball back to him. We pass to each other for a few minutes in silence before I speak up.
"I feel like I don't know much about you." I hold the ball for a moment. "Tell me about yourself?" He shrugs. "What's your favorite color?" I ask. Then I toss the ball back to him.
"Pale blue." He says. He holds the ball. "What's yours?" He sends the ball back to me.
"Dark blue. What's your favorite season?"
"Winter. Summer's too hot. And you?"
"Summer. I'm not good with handling the cold." I admit. "What's your favorite animal?"
"Polar bears. And yours?"
"Kangaroos." I tell him. "I just think they're neat." He nods and we continue tossing the ball and asking each other questions. I smile. While the heavy rain keeps us from practicing, I still feel content. Maybe practice being cancelled isn't so bad for once. I think to myself.
We continue asking each other questions while tossing the ball but soon, things go terribly wrong. "What's your favorite flavor of sports drink?" I ask. I toss the ball to him, but my grip slips at the last moment, changing the ball's path. It bounces off the bedframe and crashes through the window. We both wince at the sound of the crash. This is bad.
I try to shake off the fear and go get the ball but Furuya stops me after I get up. "Wait. The window broke you need to watch your step." He says. He's already putting on sneakers. I follow suit and we assess the damage.
"This is bad. This is bad. This is really, really, bad." I start rambling.
"We can clean this up." Furuya says. He takes our broom, dustpan, and trash can outside and starts throwing the bigger shards in the bin, acting quicker than I've ever seen him outside of baseball.
"Furuya wait. Let me do it." I stop him. He pauses and looks at me. "You're a pitcher. You need your hands. Besides I'm the one who threw the ball."
"I was the one who started it though, so it's only fair that I help." He states.
"In that case, if people walk by can you warn them to watch for broken glass?" He nods. "You also need to be careful though."
"Okay." While I'm cleaning the glass, a few people go in or out of their dorms, shooting us weird glances, but nobody really walking by.
"What happened?!" Sawamura yells from down the walkway. He runs closer to our dorm but Furuya stops him while he's a couple doors away.
"Careful." He warns. "And be quiet."
"Oh man coach is gonna be so mad when he finds out." Sawamura says. I didn't realize how much trouble we could get in for this.
"Don't blab." Furuya tells Sawamura. He nods.
"I'll leave you to it. Good luck." Sawamura says before returning to his room.
A couple minutes later, we've gotten all the glass cleaned up so we get back inside and immediately realize our next problem. The window's broken. And it's raining.
"Got any duct tape?" Furuya asks. I nod and grab the tape from my desk. I hand it off to him.
"What are you doing, Furuya-senpai?" I ask, but he's already heading out the door with his polar bear blanket before I finish the question. When he comes back in, I step out to see what he did. He taped up his blanket to use as an extra layer to keep the rain out.
"It's fine." Furuya says. He grabs a towel and starts drying off the floor.
"Do you think we'll get in trouble for this?" I ask. Furuya shrugs.
"Let's not think about that now." Furuya suggests. I nod. He starts doing some homework and I decide to review the scorebook.
Soon later, Ono returns. "Hey guys why is Furuya's blanket taped to the window?" He asks while walking through the door. He looks at Furuya, then me, then Furuya again, then the window.
"What did you guys do?!" He asks.
"It was an accident!" I say.
"What did you guys do?" He asks, louder this time.
"We were playing catch and the ball slipped and it bounced off the bedframe and it hit the window I'm sorry, Ono-senpai." I apologize.
"We need to tell coach." He says. He sets down his backpack and puts his rain jacket on.
"Wait! Don't tell him." I try to stop him.
"Why shouldn't I?"
"We don't want to get in trouble." I've seen many people stuck running laps for the entirety of practice because they were late. I don't want to imagine how much trouble we'd be in for this.
"Yui it's raining. If we tell coach then the window can get fixed and we don't have to live in a pond." He states.
"That's why we have the blanket." Furuya speaks up.
"If we tell coach, we can have an actual window instead of a blanket." He says. "C'mon let's tell coach." Neither Furuya or I move. After a few minutes of trying to get us to go to the coach's office, Ono sighs. "If we get in trouble for this, remember that I was not involved." He stresses. We nod.
-4 days later-
"Everyone we will be having a meeting to discuss some recent events and things regarding dorms. I expect to see you all in the indoor practice area in 10 minutes. If you have roommates, be with them during the meeting. If you have a roommate who for whatever reason was not at practice today, tell them they still need to be at the meeting. Even if you do not live in the dorms, you are still required to be there." Coach Kataoka says at the end of practice. The rain isn't as bad as it was the other day, but it's still there.
I start walking to the indoor practice field with Asada, Okumura, Seto, Masashi, and Kuki. As the rest of the team walks there too, I can hear some conversations.
"What do you think the meeting's about?" Toujou asks Kanemaru.
"Do you think coach Kataoka found out what happened?" Asada asks me. He found out what happened because of the fact that he's Sawamura's roommate.
"I hope not." I tell him.
"We'll find out what this is about soon so there's no point in worrying about it." Okumura says. We continue the walk. Once we reach the indoor practice area, we split off to look for our roommates.
"Furuya-senpai, Ono-senpai, do you think he found out?" I ask them quietly. Furuya shrugs. Ono stays quiet.
A few minutes later, the coach starts speaking. "Hello everyone, I'm sure you're wondering why you're here. Even the people who live off-campus. This relates to you for if you ever hang out in a friend's dorm or if you're staying on campus during a training camp. I was informed earlier that a few days ago, a set of roommates were playing catch in their dorm and managed to break a window." He pauses, and I can feel many people looking in the direction of Furuya, Ono, and I. "To make matters worse, they neglected to inform an adult for several days. Following this, baseballs are no longer allowed in the dorms. If you are using a baseball to practice, you must do so at one of the practice areas. Is that understood?"
"Yes coach!" We all say.
"Remember, if something breaks in your dorm, promptly tell an adult so we can get it fixed. That is all." Coach Kataoka says, dismissing us.
Everyone starts to make their way to the dining hall for dinner. "Yui, Furuya, Ono, please stay back a minute." We pause and make our way to the coach.
"Somebody's in trouble." Kuramochi quietly tells Ono as we pass him, Sawamura, and Asada. Ono glares at Kuramochi.
"I should wash my blanket." Furuya mumbles.
"Is that seriously what you're thinking about right now?" Ono asks him. He nods.
We make our way to the coach and wait for the inevitable. "I would like to hear from you three about the situation with your broken window. I have heard rumors floating around about it earlier in the week but I was also informed of the situation directly. Despite this, I have not seen how bad the damage is. I would like to go and see for myself how bad it is." We walk with the coach to the dorm and Furuya takes his blanket off the window.
"You used a blanket?" Furuya nods in response to the coach's question.
"We're really sorry." I apologize. Coach Kataoka sighs. "A towel would've been better." He mutters. "This isn't the first time I've seen this. This isn't good but it's not the worst broken window I've seen. I will put in a request to get the window replaced within the next few days. As punishment for not telling me, you three will be running laps at practice until the window gets fixed. I'm not mad about you breaking the window, it's because you didn't tell anyone that there's a problem. Broken glass is dangerous and we don't want any of you getting hurt. Any questions?"
"Wait. I wasn't involved." Ono objects.
"You're still their roommate and you should have informed someone when it happened." Kataoka tells him. Ono sighs and apologizes.
"If there's no more questions I'll be in my office if you need anything. Once the order gets processed, I will let you know when your new window will arrive."
"Thank you, coach." We tell him.
"Good night." He says before leaving.
"I can't believe this." Ono says.
"That's not as bad as I expected." I admit to myself. I take a few deep breaths before going to meet my friends for dinner. At least we weren't kicked off the first string.
Author's Note: I hope you enjoyed this chapter. It was fun to write. I realized while editing that this is actually the first time Sawamura made an appearance in the fic. I noticed that this fic has reached 100 views. Thank you to everyone who's read it, liked it, subscribed, or commented. I appreciate all the support.
