Today's Magical Love column is entitled "Opposites Attract." We at the Quibbler are always trying to exemplify good relationships and give you all tips to find a perfect mate. So, the Quibbler's intrepid editor, Luna Lovegood, went in the field to interview Fred Weasley, a family friend, in the back of his shop. They chatted about wizard dating, Fred's exes, and his marriage to one Ms. Hermione Granger.
Luna Lovegood: Thank you for agreeing to do this, Fred.
Fred Weasley: Of course, Luna, anything for Neville's bride-to-be.
LL: I do love your Visibility Spray. It has allowed me to spot and dodge so many wrackspurts before they've entered my ears.
FW: Thought of you when we were making it. We knew you'd love something so you could see them, but we also thought some sort of product to make invisible things visible could be useful in magical defense as well.
LL: I'm sure it has been, but of course I don't really know. Now, on to the interview. Let's begin with the profile portion, if that works?
FW: Fine.
LL: When did you begin dating?
FW: Let's seeā¦George and I, when we were at Hogwarts, we had a lot of girls sort of circling round us, you know. I had flings with a few, but I never meant them to be anything real. Had to break it off with them once they started getting too serious. If you're reading this, Anne, I'm sorry.
LL: Did you ever want to find a serious relationship like you're in now?
FW: I never really thought about it. Of course I wanted kids, and I knew I wanted to settle down someday, but you know, there was never a time when I realized that I needed to look for something serious. Maybe if I'd gotten into my late twenties, then I'd have realized I needed to be more discerning with girls. But as it is, Hermione and I got together when I was more or less twenty-one, so I didn't get to that point.
LL: What kind of dates did you go on before you met Hermione?
FW: Let's see. With the girls before Hermione, I never really got past a few months with each girl. We'd go to dinner, to bars, that sort of thing. I didn't feel a particular sense of urgency or pressure to create a perfect date.
LL: Do you have any memorable exes? Anyone you regret dating but can laugh about now?
FW: Well, there were all the girls who thought twins in general were hot, so they wanted to get with either me or George, but they didn't care which. I'm not that perceptive, so I never realized until a few dates in when they didn't seem to want to get to know me at all. I think they just wanted sex. There were a few girls at Hogwarts who were quite nice, lovely girls, but you know, I didn't want a relationship, really. It left no time for inventing, and anyway a lot of girls disapproved of the dream of the shop.
LL: So when did you meet Hermione?
FW: I guess I met her in her first year, my third. She was my little brother's best friend, and she was always trying to stop me and George from doing our pranks. Granted, her judgement was usually better than ours, but it was annoying. Sorry, love.
LL: Why did you fall in love if you thought she was annoying?
FW: Hm. If you remember, during the Battle of Hogwarts, I almost died after being crushed by a wall. I woke up, and the first face I saw was Hermione. She'd read a book on magical first aid, and she was doing her very best to revive me when everyone else was distraught. And seeing her when I woke up just reminded me that she'd always been there for me. Even though she thought our pranks were annoying, she laughed at some, and if we needed help with an ingredient or a potion or something, she'd always oblige. She'd always threaten to tell our mum or McGonagall, but she rarely did. So I realized maybe I liked her more than I thought I did.
LL: How did you become a couple?
FW: Well, over the months after the war, she was taking care of me since she was training to be a Healer and I'd just been discharged from Mungo's. We'd talk about books a lot. She didn't realize I liked to read, but I do, and we have similar taste. Or we'd just have long conversations about our childhood or our dreams or what we wanted to do in life. We had similar goals, you know, and over that time I just began realizing that I never wanted this to stop. So one day, when I was back on my feet and more or less back to normal, I waited until she was reading in the living room after everyone else had gone to bed, and I asked her if she wanted to go for lunch the next day. And that's how it started.
LL: What kind of dates did you go on with Hermione?
FW: We always like bookstore dates, but those wouldn't work if you didn't both like to read. We'll go into a bookstore, and we'll spend half an hour and choose one book for ourselves and one book for the other person, and then we'll go for lunch or dinner or whatever and talk about them. One time, we went on the roof of the shop and had a picnic and looked at the stars. That was lovely. And where I proposed later.
LL: Why do you think you and Hermione make a good match?
FW: I think, you'd think since we're so different that we wouldn't make sense. I pull pranks, she tries to get pranksters in trouble. But, you know, below the surface we're quite similar. We're both creative, and we both like to read, and we're both problem-solvers. I break us out of monotony, she pulls me back in when it's too much. So we work well together. Opposites attract, I guess.
LL: Any advice for other people trying to find a relationship like yours?
FW: Don't keep going out with someone just because you think you should. That was a mistake I made early on. I didn't like a girl but I'd stay with her because I didn't want to hurt her feelings. So our relationship never progressed because I wasn't feeling it. Also, look around you. You might fall in love with someone you already know. That's what happened to me.
LL: Thanks for that advice, Fred, our Quibbler readers will love it.
FW: No problem. Let me know if you need more Visibility Spray. It's on the house.
LL: Aw, thank you. Any parting words?
FW: Weasley's Wizard Wheezes is putting out a new line of clothing next week. They look like the Hogwarts uniform or your work clothes, but they feel like pajamas. Also, happy third anniversary, Hermione, love.
A/N: This was a fun one-shot I just thought of and had to write before I forgot the idea. Please do leave a review!
