Severus Snape was leaving the library, trying to figure out a way to repair his friendship with Lily Evans.

"Hey Snivellus", called Sirius Black across the library

"What do you want Black?"

"Come here"

Snape stepped forward cautiously, waiting for a curse to be fired at him by someone hiding behind a shelf. Thankfully, he reached Sirius without any injuries or any pranks played on him.

"What?", asked Snape aggressively

"Whoa, no need to be aggressive. Just telling you to go to the Whomping Willow tonight and press the knot at the heart of the tree. There's a passage there, you should check it out tonight"

Snape looked at him doubtfully. Black was most likely telling the truth about a secret passage around there, but he had probably set up a few traps for him. He turned on his heel and walked out of the library and down to the dungeons, wondering if he should go and investigate or not.

While this encounter was happening, Remus Lupin was with James and Peter in the 5th year boys dorm. James and Remus were practicing spells for DADA and Peter was looking up new ones for them to practice. When James noticed Lupin was barely trying and looked depressed, he put his arm around his shoulder. "Come on Moony, you go through it every month."

"You don't know what it's like to be a werewolf"

"I know, and I wish I could go with you, but Sirius and I promised Wormtail we'd help him for our OWLs tonight"

"It's already 8:30, I should get going", said Remus, walking out the door

"See you tomorrow Moony", called Peter and James

As Remus left, Sirius came in. He jumped on his bed and snatched the DADA spell book from Peter's hands.

"Alright Wormtail, DADA 101. Follow me", said Sirius as they walked out of the dorm into the common room

"Let's start with a Patronus", said James

Peter got out his wand,"Expecto Patronum". Half of a rat erupted from the end of his wand and flew across the room.

James and Sirius laughed at the half-rat flying across the room. Peter kept trying to cast a full Patronus for a few more minutes until he finally summoned a full rat.

"Congratulations Wormtail, now work on Fiendfyre", said James

Peter started working on creating Fiendfyre. He wasn't much better at it than he was becoming an Animagus, even with James and Sirius's help.

"I wish I could see the look on his face", muttered Sirius

"Who?"

"Snivellus, I told him how to get into the Willow"

"God damn it Padfoot, we're going to get expelled for this", said James as he raced out of the portrait hole.

Snape walked up to the Whomping Willow as it began to get darker. He touched the knot at the heart of the tree, and just like Black said, the tree stopped moving. There was a tunnel under the tree and he lowered himself into it. He walked for a while until he saw the last thing he would have expected. Remus Lupin turning into a wolf. Lupin was a werewolf! All of his suspicions had been right all this time. The wolf turned around and saw Snape and charged at him. Snape ran as fast as he could in the other direction.

Suddenly, another figure dropped into the tunnel.

"Run Severus!", yelled James Potter

Snape didn't need telling twice, he hightailed out of there as fast as he could. He didn't know how know how Potter planned on holding the werewolf off. If he died doing it, he would be a brave Gryffindor, but he still would have deserved it. A few minutes later, Potter came out of the tunnel.

"Here's the deal Snape, you don't tell anyone, you get leverage over us. You tell anybody, we put you in the hospital wing for a week"

Snape thought about this for a second, "How about this, Petrificus Totalus"

Potter dodged it, "Stupefy"

The two of them continued sending a variety of hexes at each other, though none of them hit the other.

Back in the common room, Lily and Sirius were the only ones left in the common room.

"Where're Potter and Snape"

"What?"

"Potter and Snape. I saw Snape go off on the grounds and Potter ran after him a few minutes later"

"They might be at the Whomping Willow, just a guess"

"I hope they're both expelled", muttered Lily as she walked out of the common room

"Potter, Snape, what the hell are you doing?", came Lily's voice, distracting James so Snape's Sectumsempra curse hit him. James fell to the ground, severely bleeding. Lily walked up to them and saw James.

"What have you done!? He needs to go to he hospital wing!", she exclaimed, running over to James, who was barely conscious and putting his arm over her shoulder, supporting him."I thought you were different Snape. I thought you were different from all of the other Slytherins. But look at you now.", she said before walking off with Potter.

That night as Snape went to sleep, he wondered what would have happened if he had been a better friend.
