"Olaf!" Young Elsa screamed out as she continued running towards her brother's scream.
"Elsa! Olaf!" she heard a deep voice call out her and her brother's name from a distance. Who was that? Was it a ghost? A kidnapper? She picked up the speed as she heard the sound of feet pounding the ground.
"Olaf!" Elsa called out again, hoping for a response. She heard the voice call her name again as she neared the edge of the woods. She stopped running just in time to see a medium sized hole in the ground. She looked around, seeing a lot more of them. They were gopher holes, she remembered her father telling Olaf and herself to watch out for them because they could trip and hurt themselves. It was on one of the rare occasions her family went hiking and spent time together that wasn't taking her to her therapy sessions. To her right she heard a slight groan and whimper.
"Olaf?" she said when she didn't hear the noise again. She cautiously walked towards the sound, mindful of the holes. Through the thick snowfall, she saw a small body lying in the snow. It was Olaf! She sighed in relief as she began to close the space between them.
"Olaf! There you are! Why are you lying in the snow? Come on get up, we have to get back home before Mama and Papa wake up." Elsa said to the unmoving boy. When Olaf still didn't move Elsa huffed and rolled her eyes in irritation.
"Olaf stop goofing around. We need to go, no time for snow angels." When Olaf still didn't respond she began to get a little wary. She slowly moved closer to Olaf's body, continuing to talk to him.
"Olaf? Please stop goofing off. Come on... W-we need to get back. Please, this isn't fun anymore. Ola-" Elsa stopped midway through her sentence when she slipped and fell under something slippery. It felt like slush, but there was no water or melted snow around. She slowly looked down. Her eyes widened and she began screaming and crying when she saw what she was sitting in. It was blood. So much blood, and it had mixed with the snow. She quickly moved to Olaf's side. The back of his head was bleeding profusely. She looked around for the cause and saw a large mossy rock covered in blood right beside him. Olaf must have tripped over one of the holes and hit his head on the rock. Elsa was crying so hard that the tears were blurring her vision. She gently cradled Olaf's head in her hands and felt the blood start to soak through her favorite light blue gloves. Her father had given them to her as a special gift one day after a particularly rough session. They had both stood in her room and repeated the mantra Dr. Wealseton told her to say whenever she felt like she was about to lose control of herself.
Elsa felt filthy sitting there on the ground with blood of all things on her hands and shoes, and dirt and snow on her night dress. Her problem started to rear its ugly head but she squeezed her eyes shut tight and tried to ignore it. She was starting to have a severe panic attack as she sat there dirty from head to toe. Now was not the time for that though she thought to herself. Gingerly, she laid Olaf's head in her lap, elevating it. She didn't know what that meant, but she had seen it on a TV show once.
"You're okay Olaf. Everything's going to be okay." Elsa whispered to the unconscious boy. She felt the wetness of Olaf's blood, still pouring from his head wound, seep through her night gown. The gown was now uncomfortably clinging to her skin because of the blood and that was it for Elsa. She went completely still and began to hyperventilate. It was getting harder for her to breath and she didn't know what to do. While her breathing wouldn't slow down, Olaf had the opposite problem. His breathing was getting slower and slower. Through her panic and confusion, she came to the conclusion that she and her brother were going to die out here in the woods. If not from the head wound or her breathing, then they'd surely freeze to death. Elsa still didn't move a muscle as the tears on her cheeks froze to her slightly bloody face, and more fell from her eyes. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she registered the voice yelling her and her brother's name again. As the voice got closer she began to realize who it was. It was her father and he sounded out of breath and worried.
"Olaf! Elsa! Where are you?!" he yelled out, frantically searching for his missing children. Elsa wanted to yell back 'We're right here Papa!' but the only thing that came out of her mouth was her deep breathing. Elsa heard a branch crunch just behind her and hoped that her father had found them. Disappointment flooded her when she heard her father continuing to trek past the bush they were hidden by. No! No! No! No! He was going to leave! He definitely wouldn't find them if she didn't say something! Anything at all. Again, she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to calm herself. A difficult task for a eight year old.
"Olaf… Elsa…" her father's voice was further away now. Determination filled Elsa when she looked down at her pale unconscious brother, she shut her eyes once more and slowed her breathing down enough to scream out.
"PAPA!"
Christian Frost stopped in his tracks and spun back around, sprinting towards the sound of his baby girl's voice.
"Elsa! Elsa I'm coming!" he called out. Elsa looked down at Olaf in her lap and smiled softly.
"Everything's gonna be okay Olaf, Papa's here now." She told the young boy as she felt her consciousness began to slip away from her. Before she went under she heard her father's voice continue to scream out her name as he broke through the bushes.
"Elsa!"
"Elsa!"
"Elsa!"
"Elsa! Please wake up!" Elsa was startled awake when she felt someone shaking her. She looked around, confused, until her eyes landed on aqua blue irises. Anna. What was Anna doing here? Wait. She had fallen asleep waiting for Anna. Waiting for Anna for what? Suddenly the previous conversation with Anna mixed with her dream hit her and tears began falling from her eyes without her realizing. She curled up on the living room's couch, clutching at one of the white chair pillows.
"It's all my fault. It's all my fault. It's all my fault…" Elsa chanted to herself as she sobbed. Anna instantly sprung into action, grabbing Elsa and engulfing the girl in a warm hug.
"It's not your fault, you didn't do this. It's nobody's fault. Everything's going to be okay." Anna tried to reassure as she tighten her hold on Elsa. Elsa tensed and broke away from the embrace, looking down at her hands with wide eyes.
"Elsa?" Anna asked confused as the blonde jumped from the couch and rounded the corner. Anna quickly followed her, making sure she wasn't about to do anything drastic. She saw Elsa go into a side room and trailed in after her. The room Elsa had went into looked to be guest bathroom. The blonde was over at the sink now, furiously scrubbing her hands like she was trying to scrub away a stain that wouldn't budge.
"Elsa…" Anna called out as the blonde continued to scrub her hands with a hand cleaning brush. Elsa completely ignored her, picking up the soap again and making the faucet water hotter. Anna could see Elsa's skin begin to turn dangerously red as the blonde scrubbed harder.
"Elsa, I think that's enough, don't you?" she asked as she slowly crept closer to her. Again Elsa ignored the redhead as her head remained downcast, hair covering her face. Anna stepped beside Elsa and gasped when she saw Elsa's hands beginning to bleed slightly. She stopped Elsa's moving hands and quickly turned off the scolding hot water, spinning Elsa around to face her.
"What are you doing? Elsa, what the heck are you doing?" Anna asked the now stoic blonde. She grabbed Elsa's hands and held them up.
"This? This is unacceptable Elsa. You could have really hurt yourself. Why were you scrubbing so hard?" Elsa's head was still bent and Anna couldn't see her face. Slowly, the redhead lifted Elsa's chin so their eyes could meet. Anna found herself staring into Elsa's red puffy eyes as more tears escaped.
"Why were you doing that?" Anna asked again, softly. She was still gently holding Elsa's hands in her own. At the question, Elsa lowered her gaze.
"No matter how hard I scrub, the blood never comes off." She responded before slowly removing her hands from Anna's and walking out of the bathroom, leaving the confused and worried redhead behind.
3 hours later
Anna sat beside Elsa in her usual spot on the couch as they watched some TV show neither of them were paying attention to. After the bathroom incident, Elsa had barely mutter two words to her. Many attempts to get the blonde talking failed, and Anna had finally given up and instead decided to steer the girl back into the living room. True to his word, Kristoff texted every five minutes. Unfortunately there was no new news on Olaf's condition. They had been operating on him for five hours now and Anna was really starting to worry. Every time Anna's phone buzzed, Elsa would jump a bit, startled, and stare at the redhead. Anna would read the text and smile sadly at the blond, shaking her head slightly and saying, "Nothing yet."
After another hour Anna's phone buzzed again, this time with a call from her blonde friend. Anna fumbled with it for a bit then finally answered.
"Hello? Kristoff? Is everything alright?" she asked nervously into the receiver. She saw Elsa staring at her again and smiled assuredly.
"Hey Anna. Um yeah, everything's okay I guess. Olaf just came out of surgery. The doctor left a few minutes ago… Elsa isn't um, near is she?" Kristoff asked. Anna didn't like how nervous and unsure he sounded. She glanced at Elsa who was still staring at her with an unreadable expression. Anna rose from the couch and walked over to the kitchen area.
"I'm really thirsty, do you want anything?" she directed the question to Elsa as she opened the fridge to get out the jug of purified water. The blonde furrowed her brow and shook her head. Anna smiled at her and shrugged as she turned her back to the blonde.
"Okay Kristoff, I'm away from Elsa. Tell me what's really going on." She demanded in a low voice, retrieving a cup from the cabinet and surreptitiously glancing at Elsa. The blonde had turned her attention back to the television, or at least that's what she wanted the redhead to think. Kristoff sighed loudly on the other end of the phone. He sounded positively exhausted.
"He's out of surgery, but he's in intensive care. They won't let us see him yet and…" Kristoff trailed off again as his voice cracked and finally he began to cry. Anna's eyes started watering when she heard the heart breaking sound.
"And what? Kristoff… what is it?" Anna asked around the lump in her own throat.
"Anna… Olaf is in a coma."
