Chapter 12
FLASHBACK
The drive back to Andy's Dad's apartment was done in silence. Not a word had been said since they rushed out the pizza place. Sam didn't know Andy that well but from the way she was clinging to Leo in the back of his truck he knows the small encounter had shaken her, just thought of that little boy in danger would probably break her.
Arriving at the apartment, Andy went straight down the hall to the bedroom Leo had been using. She never spoke to him but the quick look she came him was all he needed to know that he wasn't leaving. Staying here another night was where he would be.
A few hours had passed by, and Andy was yet to come back from the bedroom. Plodding down the hallway, Sam slowly opened the door and the slight before him made his heart melt. There lying on the single bed was Andy holding Leo tightly by her side, both sleeping the last few hours away. He could see by her face that this seemed to be only time she seemed relaxed. As relaxed as she could be with the events over the last few weeks. Rubbing a hand over his face and pulling the door closed behind him Sam still had that annoying feeling in his gut. He had learned over the years working undercover to always trust his gut. The feeling he had since leaving the pizza place just wouldn't go away. Grabbing his phone from the coffee table he made a quick call.
"Oli its me. Listen earlier Andy had a run in with the guys she's trying to bring down on her UC case…" Sam's sentence came to a halt as Oliver's booming voice came through the other end.
"What! Are you guys alright? Is her cover blown?" Oliver threw out questions so fast Sam sniggered slightly.
"Yeah, yeah we're fine. And no her cover isn't blown thanks to quick thinking on our part. Look since the moment we left I've had a feeling that I recognized one of the guys but for the life of me I don't know where from or who. Can you look into the Mason brothers for me, off the books?" Sam asked, he know it was stupid to ask because Oliver never hesitated ever and once again, he was proved right.
"You don't even need to ask buddy. I'll start looking into it tomorrow when I arrive at the station. Just you concentrate on keeping that girl of yours and the kid safe" and with that Oliver hung up the phone before Sam could even answer back.
Sam was a bit taken aback by Oliver's straight forward statement but it didn't scare him or make him want to run away. It gave him another feeling, a feeling of hope and something for the future. With a small sigh and smile on his face, Sam fell into a sleep, the best sleep he'd had for a long time.
END
Sam stood routed to the spot looking at the file that Oliver had placed in his hands. That feeling he felt last night in his gut was now hitting full force. He couldn't believe what he was seeing and reading! Finally looking back at Oliver, he could tell his friend wasn't happy about what he had found either.
The Mason brother's where the most notorious family of gangs 15th Division and Guns and Gangs had ever come across. They dealt with drug trafficking, had done for years and yet any leads or witnesses they found everything would fizzle out and they would be back at square one. Sam had never personally been involved with the brother's before but a short stint undercover a few years ago meant he had met one of them. And that's why last night he new he had seen one of them before but couldn't place him until now.
Robert Mason, head of the Mason gang was as rough as they came. Big and arrogant. From what Sam could remember no-one seemed to mess with him. Guns and Gangs have always believed that Robert had someone from inside one of the police divisions working for him, but this had never been proven or any evidence to say otherwise. It was more of a hunch but hunch that had never disappeared.
"This can't be right, surely Boyd isn't stupid enough to put another female officer back undercover after what happened the last time" Sam more or less stated, to which Oliver just shrugged and shook his head.
Three years ago, an undercover Detective Sharon Riley was signed to Guns and Gangs as they needed someone with her profile for a stint undercover. It was a supposed to be a simple few week cover and out. However, things didn't go to plan and Sharon's cover was blown. She was one of the lucky ones not to have left in a body bag, but nothing added up. She was found two day later, left in an ally way, tight up but not a mark on her. Once she returned to the 21st Division she still didn't talk much about what had happened to her and all leads she did have, all faded out. A few weeks wend by and nothing else was said or asked about it.
And now here himself and Oliver stood, holding a file on a guy that they could potentially bring down, the guy that Traci Nash had been working on for months, re-running every lead, asking every witness but getting know where. A threat had been sent to Traci from someone inside the Mason circle as word started to spread that she had been opening old cases and looking into them. The threat arrived but as far as they know nothing was carried out.
Sam's thoughts quickly turned back to Andy, fear running through his body:
"We need to take this to Frank now!" and with that Sam bolted for Frank's office, Oliver hot on his heels.
And there you have it…enjoy! I haven't forgotten about Marlo or the social work. More will come on that!
