Several months earlier . . .

"That's a bummer about you and Videl, huh?" Erasa said to Sharpener after one of their softball practices. All of the students were leaving the field, and ahead of them were Videl and her new beau.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said, looking bored.

"Oh come on. We always thought you two would end up together. You know, like a romantic fairy tale. Childhood friends can't stop bickering with each other, secretly fall for each other, then in a moment of vulnerability one confessed their love to the other."

"What fairy tales have you been reading? The ones I know of have witches, wolves, and little kids who'll probably have to visit a therapist when they're older."

She shoved him. "Seriously, though. I like Gohan and everything, but this must suck for you. If you need someone to talk with about how you feel, call me okay?"

"Sure," he muttered. Like hell he was going to talk about his feelings. The whole point of taking those boxing classes was to be able to channel his frustration appropriately, as in without having to use words and think too much about what he was feeling.

Erasa had brought up a good point, though. He did think that he and Videl were meant to be. They were childhood friends, sort of. They'd been classmates since fifth grade, but it wasn't until eighth grade that they became close friends. She seemed to trust that he wasn't one of the people who wanted to befriend her only because she was the daughter of the Champion of the World.

But more importantly, they also used to date . . . sort of. They were just kids back then, and their relationship was never officially established or meant to last forever. All he knew was she was his first kiss, and he was almost sure he was hers, too. That, coupled with their newfound friendship in high school, it seemed inevitable that they would get together again at some point—this time for real.

Then . . . this weird new kid showed up. The rest, as they say, was history.

A/N: While considering Sharpener's possible backstory, it occurred to me that in another world Gohan could've been the temporary obstacle that would ultimately prove Sharpener and Videl belonged together. I added this "epilogue" to further show Sharpener as a sympathetic character who's willing to accept Videl's decision to choose Gohan over him.
