After this mornings fiasco, we all started getting ready for our first day of school. Ragna had to leave earlier because she had early morning training in her advanced flying class. I and Thora had similar schedules, but we didn't have our first class together. I had Survival Basics and she had Navigation. Since her dragon wasn't supposed to hatch for another week, Thora had to start carrying her egg around. She still was trying to figure out a name for her dragon.
"Come on Thunder we need to go," I said grabbing my bag and heading out the door. Thunder glided from my bed to my shoulder and lay down with his tail wrapped loosely around my neck. "Thora you need help?" I asked as I saw her struggle as we walked down the mountain. "Nah. It's fine just a little cumbersome." She said giving a small smile. I smiled back and we walked in silence until we reached the bottom of the mountain where the school was.
"See you after class?" She said. "Yep," I said in response. I walked past the hatchery, science lab, pond, and went through the walkway that led into the Wilderness. I went down to the lake and up a small hill where Gobber and the rest of the class was waiting. He looked toward me and gave me an unimpressed look.
"Took your sweet time didn't you, lass." He said as everyone looked at me. When they saw the dragon in my shoulder their eyes widened and they whispered softly to one another. Gobber looked at my dragon, then back at me. "Looks like your friend decided to come early." He said and my dragon chirped in response.
"Well since you were late you get to be my unwilling volunteer." I blushed and nodded in response. He turned back to the class and started the lesson. "Today, we will be learning basic survival skills like shelter building, how to start a fire, and some other things. This class will only be taken until Snoggletog." He then hobbled toward an unlit fire pit. "First, let's start with how to build a fire. I have a bag of axes right here. These are for chopping wood not weapons. So don't play with them u three mutton heads!" He barked at a group of boys attacking each other with their axes. After everyone got their axes he continued.
"Now I will show you how to build a fire pit. Vala why don't u chop 6 wood logs." I nodded and went to a grouping of small trees and chopped all the logs then I and Thunder carried them back. "Good now set them down on the pit." I did what he said and he placed a few medium rocks in a circle around the pit. "Now you normally would use rocks or sticks to light a fire but you will normally have your dragon light it for you. If you want them to light it then point at the object and give them the command. Vala why don't you demonstrate." I nodded and walked in front of the pit. "Thundersnow." He perked up his head and glided down to the ground. "Ice Blast," I said as I pointed at the fire pit. He fired at the pit and it immediately started a fire.
He crawled back into my shoulder and chirped. "Good boy." Everyone clapped and Gobber nodded in approval."Not bad. After that your dragon might be tired. Here this should fix that." He handed me a Perch and I gave it to Thunder who swallowed it down after two bites.
"Now it's time to build a shelter. I want all of you to chop 3 logs of wood."
TIME SKIP*********************************
Next, I meet the rest of the Teachers. I even ran into the Headmaster. He was really nice. I didn't have a lot of classes today so Thundersnow and I were able to walk around the school. I noticed that a lot of the older students were heading towards the training grounds. I followed a group of students heading that way as Thunder followed. As entered through the archway I could see dozens of students flying or gliding in some cases around. Some were in the arena practicing fire shots. Others were racing each other on the Racecourse and some were practicing flying on the flying courses. It was amazing!
"Hey Vala!" I hear someone call. I looked towards where the voice came from and so it was Hiccup at The Flight Club building. I smiled and ran up the steps with Thunder following closely. "Hey! You're in charge of the flight club?" I asked as I reached the top. He smiled and turned towards the building. "Yep. I'm in charge of teaching new riders how to fly and experienced riders the advanced courses." He explained. Toothless garbled happily as he playfully swatted at Thunder as they started to play. I laughed at their antics and turned back to Hiccup.
"So when do you think Thundersnow and I will be able to start flying?" I asked curiously." He frowned a bit as he answered. "It might be a while. First you have to wait for your dragon to be big enough to ride and you will have to start out gliding. Once your dragon is fully grown you can start flying." I looked down slightly disappointed but I looked back up as I asked another question. "How long until Thundersnow will be ready to glide." Hiccup looked on in thought before answering. "If I had to guess probably around Harvest Haunt." I looked at him confused. "What's Harvest Haunt?" I asked. "Oh yeah I forgot Berk doesn't really celebrate it. It's a new Holiday we started at the school. It's around the peak of Harvest season so in about 2 and a half months. We have a lot of fun activities for the students and competitions for their clans." I asked him another question. "What clans?" He smiled kindly as he answered. "Clans are a group of students who do things together. There are leaders and co-leaders. They decide the meeting place and what the clan is going to do. Every year the clans compete in four competitions and the last one is for the two best performing clans. The best clan gets the Clan of the year trophy and bragging rights the students seem to really like it."
"How do you get in?" He pointed towards an info board as he answered. "You can turn in an application over there or create your own clan but it'll cost a bit." I nodded and smiled. "Thanks Hiccup." He smiled. "No problem. I'm glad I could help." I smiled and whistled for Thunder who quickly came over and hopped on to my shoulder he curled his tail around my chest. "And Vala." He called again. Turned towards him with a questioning look. "I can already tell that you are going to become a great dragon rider and a strong ally to have. I think that soon we're going to go through some tough times but I think that with you on our side we'll when whatever battle we face. So when the day comes and I ask you for help I hope you will come." He said with a serious tone but a small smile on his face.
I nodded my head I got shock and continued towards the archway my mind racing at what Hiccup just said. I wonder what he meant by that. I thought in wonder as I headed up the mountainside towards the dorms.
MEANWHILE...
Men in spiked armor were preparing boats and fixing weapons. One figure can towards the second in command who was watching the men as they were preparing. "What's the status, Savage." A young voice asked. "Oh, very well sir. With the progress we've made we should be ready by next fall." He said in a scratchy voice. The figure grabbed Savage's throat as he began to squirm. "I said that we are going to attack Berk before summer started! Now if that doesn't happen it looks like you will start sleeping with the Scauldrons." The voice said. "Yes sir! I will have them ready by spring." He said in fear. "Good. I will be back by Snoggletog to check on your progress."
"Of course. Those dragon riders won't see it coming. Right Dagur?" He said with a malicious smile. The figure turned back around to reveal Dagur crazier than ever. He laughed as he answered. "Right. Hiccup I hope you have a plan because you and your night fury won't live much longer, Brother." He said and he laughed maniacally.
